For as much as I love horror and the Halloween season, I am something of a softie at heart, so the Christmas season is the time of year when I really thrive. I love Christmas songs and holiday treats, and I will pretty much watch any and every movie that has some kind of a Yuletide angle to it. That being said, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Michael Dougherty’s Krampus was a film that immediately captured my heart back when it was released in 2015, and it became one of my required viewings every December once it hit home media, ultimately becoming part of our traditional viewings to celebrate the holiday season. And I think that’s something most genre fans have done as well over the years, so I’m not sure that I have to do much to sell you on the film with this...

He's the creative mind behind the music for both of Michael Dougherty's beloved holiday horror movies, Trick ’r Treat and Krampus, and Douglas Pipes' captivating music can now be heard in the recent horror comedy The Babysitter. To celebrate his new score and to reflect on his impressive past work, we caught up with Pipes for a Q&A feature, and he discussed his collaborations with Dougherty, how he became interested in music during his formative years, and which composer is still a major influence on his own work.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Douglas. When did you initially become interested in music and what did you listen to in your formative years?
Douglas Pipes: My father was an elementary and junior high school music teacher, so I was exposed to music from the very beginning. I took up piano when I was eight.

Built on a foundation of successful and highly collectible soundtrack reissues, the debut issue from Waxwork Records’ House of Waxwork comic book series has quickly established itself as one of the most sought-after treats this Halloween season. A showcase of paperback scares, movie poster aesthetics, and a devilish “host” character (The Die-Rector), House of Waxwork oozes with nostalgic nods to both EC Comics and VHS horror. Waxwork also carves out a niche selling point for themselves by pairing up the comic with an original 7-inch soundtrack which will both immerse and entertain the reader. With issue one out now in both stores and online, Daily Dead caught up with Kevin Bergeron, co-owner of Waxwork Records, to chat about the past, present, and future of the Waxwork comic brand.
After establishing Waxwork as one of the premier soundtrack record labels, what made you want to branch off into comics? Was this always your intention?...

A murderous principal, werewolves, a school bus massacre, a demonic pumpkin creature. In lesser hands, these elements combined might signal an overly ambitious, convoluted mess jammed into a tight 82 minutes. Luckily, Trick ’r Treat is quite the opposite: a bold anthology of Halloween tales stitched together like patchwork on a quilt, written and directed by the very capable Michael Dougherty (Krampus). In fact, Dougherty’s cleverly crafted Frankenstein-esque film should be at the top of every seasonal watch list; it’s a Halloween perennial that refuses to stay dead. Here’s why.
Originally set to hit theaters in October 2007, Warner Bros. inexplicably pulled the film from its schedule, despite a young, recognizable cast and seasonal allure. It was rumored to be bumped to the following October, but ended up settling with a straight-to-dvd release in 2009. For whatever reason, the studio’s lack of confidence and treatment of the film stunted...

Playing in theaters now is Legendary Pictures’ comedy-horror movie, Krampus. From the director of Trick ‘r Treat, Michael Dougherty, this darkly festive tale of a yuletide ghoul, reveals an irreverently twisted side to the holiday.
Part mischievous, part playful, the score is by composer Douglas Pipes. Read our interview with him here.
Universal Pictures has released two snarky new music videos from this must-see holiday film.
Read our review here.
When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max (Emjay Anthony) is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit has unleashed the wrath of Krampus: a demonic force of ancient evil intent on punishing non-believers.
All hell breaks loose as beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own, laying siege to the fractured family’s home and forcing them to fight for each other if they hope to survive.

It’s the holiday season where most are thinking egg nog, fluffy snow, decorating cookies and Santa Claus. But if director Michael Dougherty has anything to say about it with his latest film Krampus, this festive time of year will include a darker Christmas legend whose shadow over pop culture is growing.
Ancient folklore warns of Krampus, a myth that has been traced back centuries throughout European cultures. Santa rewards the nice; Krampus punishes the naughty. Santa brings laughter and joy; Krampus unleashes darkness and mayhem. Santa gives presents; Krampus takes souls.
Dougherty says, “The same way that Americans send out Christmas cards, Europeans have this rich tradition of sending out Krampus cards. I was shown these beautiful illustrations of this creature called Krampus, who stole children, and images of people cowering in fear. Still, they had such a fun, mischievous quality, similar to our Halloween. I found that appealing...

Make sure this album is on your list this holiday season. The Krampus – The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will release digitally on December 4, 2015, on Back Lot Music.
The album features the original music created by composer Douglas Pipes (Monster House, Trick ‘R Treat), pre-orders available now on iTunes. A CD is forthcoming, while Waxwork Records will distribute the soundtrack on vinyl, pre-orders available starting December 4th at www.waxworkrecords.com. The digital album also features a bonus track of the popular tune “Carol of the Bells,” rewritten and appropriately retitled “Krampus Karol of the Bells.”
When creating the score, Pipes wanted to remain true to the spirit of Christmas. “We used melodies of Christmas carols, sometimes just fragments, sometimes altered, as well as traditional Christmas instruments throughout,” said Pipes. He knew it was going into dark fantasy-horror territory, but to make the score unique Pipes created a theme for Krampus...

Principal photography is set to begin on Legendary Pictures‘ Krampus, a horror-comedy feature film that reveals an irreverently twisted side to the Christmas holiday.
This darkly festive tale of a yuletide ghoul is co-written and directed by Michael Dougherty. The visual effects are from the Oscar-winning creature-effects wizardry of Weta Workshop and the Oscar-winning visual effects of Weta Digital.
Krampus will be released on December 4, 2015, by Universal Pictures.
A humorously creepy alternative to the traditional holiday classic, Krampus stars Adam Scott (“Parks and Recreation,” The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty), Academy Award nominee Toni Collette (Little Miss Sunshine, The Sixth Sense), Golden Globe nominee Allison Tolman (“Fargo“), David Koechner (Anchorman series), Emmy nominee Conchata Ferrell (“Two and a Half Men”), Emjay Anthony (Chef), Stefania Owen (The Lovely Bones) and Krista Stadler (Lena Rais).

As you know, music plays a huge part in the filmmaking process and plays with our emotions while we are watching the movie. Music heightens our senses and adds to the quality of film. When it comes to horror movies, the music is supposed to scare us, make us feel uneasy, and gives us moments of panic and fear. Director Martin Scorsese said the following about music and film:
“Music and cinema fit together naturally. Because there’s a kind of intrinsic musicality to the way moving images work when they’re put together. It’s been said that cinema and music are very close as art forms, and I think that’s true.”
Just the other day the main theme song from Halloween started playing on the radio, and it freaked my kids out to the point that they were in tears. It was sad but kind of funny at the same time.

Quick, what’s the scariest horror film score out there? I’m sure a couple of no-brainers came to mind, and a few of you probably thought of something wholly original. Thanks to the Cinemagic channel on Sirius Xm, we have an official list to choose from. There are a few shocking inclusions, and a couple of omissions, one that I, myself, deem glaring.
See for yourself:

I am always wary when the masses of online movie bloggers fall in line for a film. Such was the case for Michael Dougherty's long-delayed Trick 'r Treat, which was slated for a theatrical release as far back as October 2007, but was subsequently shifted to Warner Bros.'s direct-to-dvd label and shuffled onto shelves for a DVD and Blu-ray debut. Of course, when such a scenario takes place the champions of the film cry even louder and a film gets an undeserved hype behind it, or at least a hype the film can't live up to and that's what we have here as the premise of Trick 'r Treat is entertaining enough, but as a film it just doesn't do anything more than make for a decent passing of the time.
Trick 'r Treat, to my knowledge, is the first wholly dedicated Halloween film. I could be wrong, but...

On Sunday, October 4, under a full moon, a crowd lined up around the block for ShockTillYouDrop.com and the New Beverly Cinema's screening of Trick 'r Treat . Regardless of the fact that it was arriving on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, October 6, guests were eager to see the anthology horror film on the big screen. Star Anna Paquin ( True Blood ) was spotted in the audience, as was Seth Green, Tahmoh Penikett ( Battlestar Galactica , Dollhouse ) and composer Douglas Pipes. After receiving a thunderous applause post-screening, this writer took to the front of the theater to join Dougherty, Penikett and Pipes for a Q&A. Audience members who chimed in with a question of their own scored a DVD copy of Trick 'r Treat . Below, you'll find highlights from our discussion as...

La-La Land Records sent along info on CD soundtracks for two anticipated fall-2009 fright films it has released this week. One is the original score for the long-awaited Trick ’R Treat (which hits DVD and Blu-ray October 6), composed by Monster House’s Douglas Pipes.
Trick writer/director Michael Dougherty has great praise for Pipes, saying, “Like myself, Douglas was a newcomer to the industry, but he made one hell of an entrance with his score for Monster House. I’ll never forget watching that movie, bobbing my head to the music, and thinking to myself ‘Holy crap, who is this guy?!’ It was mischievous but scary, fun yet foreboding. It was like hearing Elfman or Goldsmith for the first time, and I was hooked.”
Pipes, who earned accolades and award nominations for his Monster House compositions, adds, “When I first spoke to Michael about Trick ’R Treat, his love of film music was quite infectious.
