On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Who Knows Why We Make the Memories We Do?
IMDb search results and the monolithic “critical consensus” can tell you what supposedly should come to mind when any given actor comes up in conversation. But every cinephile knows that for whatever reason performers become permanently linked to specific roles in our minds. It’s an indelible, personal assignment that can be sentimentally meaningful (Robin Williams will always be the “Aladdin” Genie in Disney adults’ hearts) — or inexplicable and circumstantial.

In the summer of 1996, Tom Cruise and director Brian De Palma achieved something that Hollywood would spend much of the next decade trying to replicate: a genuinely great movie adaptation of a popular television show that blew up at the box office. The first Mission: Impossible movie was somehow both an ode to the face-swapping, hi-tech hijinks of the original 1960s series while also serving as the perfect star vehicle for Cruise. Even De Palma was at the peak of his powers as an auteur, having just made his most underrated movie in Carlito’s Way.
In the years that followed, other big screen updates of small screen favorites would try to repeat the formula with often disastrous results. Film versions of shows like Wild Wild West, Lost in Space, The Avengers (not that one), and The Mod Squad all amounted to miserable trips to the multiplex. Meanwhile Mission: Impossible’s...

“Mission: Impossible – Fallout” writer/director Christopher McQuarrie teased a future project with Tom Cruise that sounds utterly tantalizing on the 200th episode of “Mission: Impossible”-centered podcast Light the Fuse (co-hosted by yours truly alongside Charles Hood).
With McQuarrie — who made his “Mission” directing debut on 2015’s “Rogue Nation” — writing and directing the next two sequels, he appeared on Light the Fuse alongside Cruise to tease the upcoming films and talk about the franchise. And when asked what comes next after “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Part Two” (set for release in the summer of 2024), McQuarrie said he didn’t know, exactly. But there is a new project that McQuarrie and Cruise have started talking about, to be co-written by McQuarrie’s partner Erik Jendresen (who is working on the new “Mission: Impossible” films). “It’s all the same to me, we’re all in every time,” McQuarrie said. “If it works,...

There are few richer collaborations in contemporary cinema between a director and their cinematographer than Paul Thomas Anderson and Robert Elswit. The pair worked together from Anderson’s debut, “Hard Eight,” all the way through “Inherent Vice,” with Elswit picking up a much-deserved Academy Award for their penultimate film together, “There Will Be Blood” (more on that later). In a recent episode of the “Light the Fuse” podcast, hosts Charles Hood and Playlister Drew Taylor share the second half of their interview with the director of photography, where he discusses his work on the “Mission: Impossible” films as well as his collaborations with Anderson.

South by Southwest (SXSW) is the best week of the year for film fanatics. Period. It's in a wonderful place (Austin, Texas), sweetened by a lovely atmosphere that mixes the highbrow appreciation of erudite film nerds with the go-for-broke excitement of genre enthusiasts. There's nothing quite like it in the world of film festivals -- the vibe at SXSW isn't something that's easily replicated or translated; it just is.
We were on hand to take it all in and report back. Our interviews from the festival will be coming soon, along with the films that they accompany. But we also wanted to rank every film that we saw, in order of best to worst. This year's crop was pretty wonderful, even those in the back half of the list are still pretty great. (There were a couple of stinkers, but that happens at every festival.)
So sit back and relax,...

One of the films of SXSW 2015 that’s getting praised by nearly everyone who’s seen it is Charles Hood’s Night Owls. Telling the story of a drunken one night stand that takes a turn for the darker when one character takes a bottle of pills, Night Owls finds a way to be one of the most hilarious films of the festival. Much of that humor is thanks to the excellent chemistry between the two leads as they beat each other up and banter back and forth.
Those two leads are Adam Pally and Rosa Salazar. We had the pleasure of sitting down with them the morning after the premiere to discuss the film. We talked about stepping outside of comfort zones, being so comfortable on screen together, how to properly handle physical comedy and more.
Check out the full interview below.

Sometimes a movie succeeds based on one simple factor, and in the case of Charles Hood’s Night Owls, that single winning ingredient is chemistry. Bubbly, all-too-charming chemistry. It sounds like such a write-off, because every movie depends on the chemistry between performers, but we all know there’s sometimes a noticeable wall that prevents characters from forming a connected unit. Fortunately, that problem does not exist between leading cohorts Adam Pally and Rosa Salazar, who strike a hilariously romantic chemistry that so many typical genre snoozers so sorely lack. Oh the wonders you can accomplish with only two actors who click on humanistic levels that engage both comedy and emotion, and look no further than Night Owls for proof.
The film opens with a drunken fling between two nameless characters we eventually learn to be Kevin (Pally) and Madeline (Salazar), who are both riding the highs of the previous night.

South by Southwest starts tomorrow, Friday, March 13, and my pores are beaming with excitement, though that could just be a medical condition. I am looking at a very packed schedule of films over the nine day festival, with a total of 38 in all (36 reviews to write). So, I basically will be drowning in movies. But, then again, I can't complain too much, as I wouldn't have it any other way. You can take a look at what I hope my schedule ends up being below. Obviously, things could change as the festival progresses, with some titles getting more buzz than others and overtaking current films and so forth. But, I think, this is how I will be spending my SXSW. I will be updating this post throughout the festival with schedule changes and links to my reviews, so maybe bookmark this page if you're interested. I hope you enjoy my coverage,...

Amy Schumer and Bill Hader in TrainwreckPhoto: Universal Pictures With Sundance just wrapping up and Berlin starting up in a few days, we are now immersed in the year-long barrage of film festivals. One such festival in South By Southwest. A few weeks back they announced the first seven films of their program, including the opening night film Brand: A Second Coming. Today, they have revealed the rest of the features to be shown in March (except for the midnight program), and some of it has me very excited. The bigger titles announced do not do much for me. Paul Feig's Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, and the Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart starrer Get Hard leave a lot to be desired in terms of anticipation, as does a work in progress cut of Judd Apatow's latest film Trainwreck. I'm guessing an Apatow work in progress is probably around three and a half hours.

Kevin Pollak and TV veterans Tony Hale and Peter Krause have joined the cast of “Night Owls,” an indie comedy that stars Adam Pally (“The Mindy Project”) and Rosa Salazar (“Parenthood”), TheWrap has learned. Charles Hood (“Freezer Burn”) is directing from a script he co-wrote with Seth Goldsmith. Production is currently under way. Pally stars as Kevin, a workaholic who has a drunken one-night stand with Madeline, a beautiful train wreck who he's horrified to discover is actually his boss’ jilted ex-mistress. When Madeline ingests an entire bottle of sleeping pills, Kevin is forced to keep her awake through the night.
