It seems we’ll be seeing a lot of the Daily Planet in James Gunn’s Superman, as the director has assembled quite the cast of characters to fill the ranks of the newspaper. THR reports that Mikaela Hoover and Christopher McDonald have joined the cast of Superman as Cat Grant and Ron Troupe, respectively.
Cat Grant is a gossip columnist who was introduced as a potential love interest for Clark Kent. The character was created by Marv Wolfman and Jerry Ordway and has made the leap to live-action several times before, notably by Tracy Scoggins in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and by Calista Flockhart in Supergirl. As for Ron Troupe, the character was created by Jerry Ordway and Tom Grummett and is regarded as one of the Daily Planet’s best reporters. In other Daily Planet casting news, it was announced earlier this week that...

Mikaela Hoover and newcomer Christopher MacDonald are the latest actors to join the cast of James Gunn’s “Superman,” which is currently in production.
The duo will be playing Daily Planet staffers Cat Grant and Ron Troupe. Earlier this week, “SNL” Alum Beck Bennet also joined the Daily Planet masthead as Sports editor Steve Lombard.
Created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Jerry Ordway, Cat Grant first appeared in 1987’s “The Adventures of Superman” #424 as a gossip columnist for the Daily Planet. On the small screen Cat Grant was previously played by Tracy Scoggins in “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” and Calista Flockhart in the “Arrowverse” television series “Supergirl.”
Ron Troupe first debuted in 1991’s “The Adventures of Superman” #480 and was created by Jerry Ordway and Tom Grummett. In the DC Comics, Troupe is best known as a straight-laced, levelheaded reporter who took over Clark Kent’s...

James Gunn is filling out the Daily Planet newsroom.
Mikaela Hoover and Christopher McDonald have joined the cast of Gunn’s Superman, the inaugural movie of DC Studios.
The feature is currently in production in Atlanta with David Corenswet starring as Clark Kent/Superman, and Rachel Brosnahan playing Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane.
The duo will have company on the news desk. Earlier this week, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Saturday Night Live alum Beck Bennett had joined the production to play Steve Lombard, a blowhard and self-serving reporter who in the comics serves as a foil to boy scout reporter Kent.
Sources tell THR that Hoover is playing Cat Grant, who in the comics was a gossip columnist who had her eyes set on Kent. The character, created by Marv Wolfman and Jerry Ordway, has appeared in several TV shows, most notably in CW’s Supergirl in which she was played by Calista Flockhart.

Production continues on DC Studios' Superman, and just days after sharing that widely discussed first look at David Corenswet's Man of Steel, director James Gunn has now shared a new behind-the-scenes photo.
This one highlights comic book luminaries invited to set by the filmmaker and executive, including current Superman writers Jason Aaron and Joshua Williamson, along with legends like Dan Jurgens and Jerry Ordway.
Justice League International's Kevin Maguire was also on hand, as was Mister Terrific's co-creator John Ostrander and DC Comics heavyweights Jim Lee and Scott Snyder. You'll also spot All-Star Superman artist Frank Quitely (that comic has seemingly been a key source of inspiration for the DC Studios co-ceo).
"Great day with some comic book titans visiting the [Superman] set," Gunn said on Instagram. "So many of my heroes all at once it was really overwhelming."

Superman’s incredible 85-year history is defined with intricate detail and unique understanding by those who’ve known him best – the authors, artists, filmmakers, actors and experts tasked with propagating his legend through every medium – in the latest Edward Gross omnibus, Voices From Krypton, published by Nacelle Books. The hardcover book is now available via Amazon, online retailers and popular bookshops, with an e-book edition also available.
Hailed as the most comprehensive examination of Superman in history, Voices From Krypton begins in the mid 1930s with the character’s creation by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, and concludes with the announcement of the next big screen adventure, Superman: Legacy. Topics range from Superman’s appearances in different mediums to the individual actors who’ve played the character, from Superman’s Silver Age to present day iterations, and from the subtleties of capturing the Man of Steel to the tentpole moments of his past 85+ years.

It’s hard to explain now, thirty years on, just what a huge event The Death of Superman was. It grew far beyond anything DC Comics could have imagined. It all started with that same old thing in comics, falling sales on the Superman books. There was nothing wrong with the stories or creative teams, they were all very good. I should know because I have practically every issue after all. The problem was with culture. Punisher was big, Ghost Rider was big, Wolverine was big, Batman was getting darker and darker. Superman was just out of step with tastes. So, to get a bit of publicity, then Editor Mike Carlin and his creative teams decided to kill Superman (temporarily of course).

The death of Superman continues to loom large over the DC Universe, just as the actual, legendary tale, “The Death of Superman,” looms large over popular culture. It shouldn’t be surprising that one of the most creatively abundant periods in Superman history yielded one story that continues to cast such a long shadow, and yet “The Death of Superman” has become, second only to the Man of Steel’s origin story, perhaps the best known tale in the character’s history.
It’s more than just the story itself. “The Death of Superman” was a media event at a time when comics weren’t necessarily getting mainstream attention. Radio, TV, and traditional print media seized on the opportunity, and casual fans unaware that nobody stays dead in the world of superheroes, genuinely thought DC was bringing the career of its longest-running hero to a close. Since then, the story has been adapted for animation,...

Do heroes kill? The Rock certainly isn’t the first person to raise this question, but he does need to answer it after fans expressed frustration with the latest trailer for his upcoming Dceu movie, Black Adam.
According to reports about the new trailer released at CinemaCon this week, the Rock’s character Black Adam declares, “Heroes don’t kill people… Well, I do.” Responding to a report on the trailer from Fandango reporter Erik Davis, a Twitter user pointed out that several Dceu heroes have killed, including Superman and Batman, deciding, “That line doesn’t make sense.”

This Young Justice: Phantoms review contains spoilers.
Young Justice Season 4 Episode 6
It doesn’t take a lot to bring me back in, and Young Justice: Phantoms found the sweet spot this week with “Artemis Through the Looking Glass.” It turns out all they needed to do was toss me a couple of crumbs of Cassandra Cain content and everything would be better.
It helps that this week was actually animated. The story still feels rushed, but the kinetic energy of the show is back to its normal level. A huge chunk of the episode is dedicated to a fight between Black Spider (Young Justice’s Spectacular Spider-Man knockoff) and Rictus from the League of Shadows, and Tigress, Onyx, Scandal Savage, Orphan, and Cheshire on the other side. Tigress had brought in Cheshire last week to help her figure out which of Onyx and Scandal was a potential mole, and they...

So, incredible as it may seem now, there was a time when Multiverse was a dirty word. Back in the early 1980’s DC decided that having multiple versions of their characters was just too confusing for potential new readers, and so essentially threw all their long term readers under the bus by writing out of existence whole chunks of DC history, as well as quite a few characters. I loved and hated it in equal measure, hated it for the loss of things I really loved such as Earth-2, but admiring the incredible story that Marv Wolfman, George Perez, and Jerry Ordway put together. Now, of course, DC has done a full 360 degree shift in its outlook, and recognised that rather than alternate characters and worlds being confusing, they actually allow you to appeal to more people, by offering...

Not content with currently hitting it out of the park over at Image with Geiger, Johns pitches up with a timely reminder that although Image are his new friends, DC are his long term best buds. He obviously made his career there, and a big part of the start of that career was a rather good book called Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E that introduced a young girl called Courtney Whitmore. This character is probably dearest to John’s heart than any other, as he modelled her on his real life sister Courtney, who tragically died in a plane crash. With that book and his use of her in Jsa (another great book) Johns established Courtney/ Stargirl as a strong enough character that she ended up with her own TV show. I’ve loved the...

The Batman Burtonverse is coming back in a big way. Not only is Warner Bros. bringing back Michael Keaton as Batman in the upcoming Flash movie but DC Comics is set to publish a 6-issue limited series that explores what happened next after Tim Burton’s first Gotham City outing rolled credits.
Batman ’89 brings together the movie’s original screenwriter, Sam Hamm, with artist Joe Quinones, who has been tied to a revival of the Burtonverse in the comics for quite some time. Quinones previously pitched a similar miniseries to DC, at the time to be written by Kate Leth (Hellcat). While the idea was rejected, Quinones’ designs for a comic book sequel to Batman have received tons of praise from fans in the years since. It’s no surprise, then, that the idea stuck at DC, and that we’ll finally get to see Quinones’ take on the Burtonverse.

Injustice: Gods Among Us was a bit of a surprise hit video game – a successful fighting game with an engaging story from the people who gave the world the S-Tier cartoonish gore of the Mortal Kombat franchise. It was then turned into an even bigger surprise: a creatively and financially successful tie-in comic that massively expanded the universe of the game, telling the story of the five years preceding the game and bringing in multiple Lantern corps, magic users, and gods from DC’s mythical universe. DC has decided to follow up on that popularity with another expansion.

With an enormous swath of the world involved in varying degrees of social distancing, many of us suddenly find ourselves with a lot of time on our hands. Never fear! There are more options for streaming comics than ever before, and that means we have access to more of comics history, more hidden gems and epochal runs than ever before. But the variety of options to read can be daunting. That’s why we’ve put together a recommendation list of some of our favorite comics binge reads to help you through quarantine.

Us old fan boys do tend to do a lot of moaning about some of the comics put out these days,, but now and again a little nugget is thrown up that seemingly all fans, young and old, can enjoy. I’ve been so excited waiting for the Marvels Snapshots launch. The original Marvels series, by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross, enjoys something of a well deserved legendary status these days, and took the simple idea of using a normal person to document the Marvel Universe. That time round it was a photographer, Phil Sheldon, witness to some of the iconic moments in Marvel history. Marvels: Eye of the Camera followed a few years later, not as good but still a fun return to the concept. Now we have a similar return, but this time looking at different eras and characters every issue.

"The Snyder Cut" is an alternate edit of the feature film "Justice League" (2017) directed by Zack Snyder from a screenplay by Chris Terrio:

Crisis on Infinite Earths brought us Robert Wuhl as Alexander Knox on Earth-89, bringing beloved Batman movies into continuity.
The first chapter of Crisis on Infinite Earths introduced a variety of new parallel Earths to the DC Universe. Most Arrowverse action takes place on Earth-1, with a significant portion also taking place on Earth-38 (home of Supergirl). Over the years we’ve been introduced to other Earths including Earth-90, the world where the classic The Flash TV series from the early 1990s took place, and where John Wesley Shipp plays Barry Allen. Crisis on Infinite Earths aims to designate even more of those worlds (probably before destroying them), and part one introduced two Batman-centric ones, the retro-flavored Earth-66, and the somewhat gothic Earth-89.
What is Earth-89?

Well, it's finally here. Crisis on Infinite Earths kicked off with a tremendous, ridiculously ambitious hour of television. "Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One" is the Supergirl chapter of this year's Arrowverse crossover, so naturally it put a lot of focus on what was happening on Earth-38, with plenty of time for Superman and Lois to shine, as well. But there was a big surprise death along the way, with lots of breadcrumbs and DC Comics Easter eggs leading up to it.

The Doomsday Saga sprawled across the four monthly Superman titles for the better part of a year, clearly too long to successfully adapt as part of the DC Animated Universe series of films. When The Death of Superman was announced, everyone knew a second film would follow and sure enough, viewers were treated to The Reign of the Superman. The 1992-93 storyline was streamlined and revised to be fit into the animated continuity, so characters who weren’t around at the time, are here now.
Warner Home Entertainment has edited the two films together into a 2:46 and has released it as The Death and Return of Superman released in a variety of formats including the nifty 4K Ultra HD Limited Edition Gift Set. The 4K gift set comes with Superman: Doomsday as a bonus 4K disc.

Warning: Big spoilers for the end of Shazam! below.
As any superhero film connoisseur knows, the strength of the story lives and dies by the strength of the villain - literally and metaphorically. Do they have Loki's sass? Kilgrave's obsessive manipulations? Kingpin's ruthlessness? In Shazam!, Mark Strong plays the film's big bad, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, and is just as cruel as he is bald (very). But he's actually not the only antagonist that pops up over the course of Shazam! During a brief but ominous midcredits scene, an imprisoned Sivana is visited by another villainous presence from the comics: a superintelligent evil two-inch talking worm named Mister Mind.
After having lost a battle with Billy Batson's Shazam (played as an adult by Zachary Levi), Sivana is locked away in a prison somewhere. We see him, sapped of the powers the now-defeated Seven Deadly Sins imbued him with, frantically scribbling a...

Black Adam doesn't appear in the Shazam movie, but he's headed to the Dceu soon. We have a history of one of DC's best villains for you.
As we all know, Shazam is really Bally Batson, the young orphan boy who is pure of heart and worthy of the power of six mythological champions. But Billy isn’t the only mortal who was able to tap into the power of Shazam. There were a number of other Shazam family members, but today we are going to focus our attention on the most badass recipient of the ol' Shazam magic, Black Adam. Black Adam is truly the most complex (and violent) character to spring from the Shazam mythos and has been the center of some of DC’s best tales of the past 20 years. Black Adam has become one of DC’s greatest anti-heroes, a godlike being...

Shazam! is a lighthearted superhero movie from a director not really known for telling lighthearted stories. Director David F. Sandberg is known for his work in the only successful (modern) horror movie shared cinematic universe, with the Conjuring-adjacent Annabelle: Creation, not to mention the tense and violent Lights Out. But Shazam! has humor and heart to spare, a brightly colored romp through the magical corners of the Dceu.
But you don’t have to look far to see how Sandberg’s horror influences are felt in the movie. A key point of the film is the release of the magical avatars of the Seven Deadly Sins: Pride, Envy, Lust, Sloth, Gluttony, Greed, and Wrath, who are controlled by the villainous Dr. Sivana. They've been represented in the comics before, with their statue forms appearing in the very first Shazam story in 1939, and appearing as their scary, demon-y...

DC Comics have of late been celebrating the 80th anniversary of both a flagship title, in Action Comics, and their flagship character, Superman. Both are, of course, fully worthy of such accolades. Action Comics has been continuously published since the dawn of the comic book industry, and without Superman there would possibly be no comic book industry. He was the spark that lit the flame. I have already reviewed DC’s 80 Years of Superman book, which was a love letter to every decade of Superman’s adventures, cherry picking some of the many high points from the 1930′s to the present day. It was very much a look back at Action Comics greatest hits, and a great reminder it was too. But what about the future?

This review contains minor spoilers.
Even if you aren’t a fan of Superman, you can’t deny that he paved the way for all superheroes to follow. To say the first issue of Action Comics that shipped all the way back in 1938 was a game-changer is quite the understatement, for it forever reshaped the pop culture landscape.
With that, I find it highly appropriate that very title be the first ongoing series to reach the 1000 milestone. As such, DC pulled out all the stops with this oversized anniversary issue, assembling some of the greatest creators to have ever touched the Man of Steel for what is an anthology of sorts. Really, it’s a veritable who’s who, as they secured the services of Peter J. Tomasi, Patrick Gleason, Louise Simonson, Jerry Ordway, Scott Snyder, Marv Wolfman, Geoff Johns and Richard Donner, to name but a few.
Speaking of which,...

Love him or hate him, you have to acknowledge that every superhero you admire today owes their existence to the Man of Steel – and it all started back in 1938 with the release of Action Comics #1. In those pages, we saw the debut of Superman, who soon went on to completely take over that title and headline an ongoing series of his own.
Originally created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Big Blue has since inspired fans in radio productions, animation, live action cinema and especially the realm of television, which is seemingly never bereft of Kal-El or his supporting characters for too long.
Not surprisingly, DC Comics intend on honoring his enduring legacy this spring with the historic release of Action Comics #1000, the first comic book to organically reach that milestone. (Face it, Deadpool‘s tongue-in-cheek thousandth issue doesn’t count.) And as such, it obviously won’t be your average twenty-odd page release.

Titan Comics have announced that their Fighting American redux is to get a brand-new creative team, and a fresh new adventure in The Ties That Bind #1, coming in March 2018.
Fighting American first appeared in 1954, created by the minds behind Captain America Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. In their original Fighting American series, Simon and Kirby introduced readers to Nelson Flagg who took part in an experimental Us Military procedure that saw his mind transferred into the enhanced and revitalized body of his dead brother, Johnny Flagg, to become America’s first and only super hero, Fighting American.
Titan Comics’ direct continuation of the original series takes place 63 years later, with Fighting American and his sidekick Speedboy marooned in the 21st Century. Fighting American: The Ties That Bind will see the original Fighting American faced with new and classic enemies, and some old Flagg family secrets are revealed that could break our heroes’ All-American spirit!

According to TV Line, Dan Payne (Strange Empire, Watchmen) will be playing a younger version of Obsidian in season 2 of Legends of Tomorrow. The site further clarifies that when the Legends of Tomorrow team first meet the character, he'll be played by Payne, while a future version of the character is played by Lance Henriksen (Millennium, Aliens). This is a pretty interesting development as there are currently no older versions of the 1940s Jsa besides Obsidian. Is there some big, climactic showdown with the Legion of Doom that leaves the shadow-wielding superhero as the only survivor? About Obsidian Obsidian is a DC Comics superhero who first appeared in All-Star Squadron #25 (1983). Created by Roy Thomas and Jerry Ordway, Todd James Rice is the son of original Green Lantern, Alan Scott and Golden Age super-villain Thorn. With metahumans for parents, it was only natural for Todd to be born with powers of his own.

With the Joker back on the big screen in Suicide Squad, we celebrate the craziest plans of the Clown Prince of Crime...
He's the greatest villain of them all. He's the evil that tests Batman and makes the hero better. He's an uncontrollable force of chaos, more akin to a hurricane than a criminal, who strikes without warning. He believes that life is a chaotic farce and everything exists as part of a twisted game between him and Batman. He is the star of comics, television, cartoons, and film. He's the Joker, one of the most enduring symbols of evil in the last century.
The Joker is no match for Batman physically, so when he puts one over on the Dark Knight, when he 'gets' him, it has to be a masterpiece of chaos and violence. These are just some of the greatest moments where the Joker...

I reached out to several writers and artists from DC Comics to get their take on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Their reactions were mostly positive, at least from those who actually saw the movie. A surprising amount of artists are abstaining from it altogether. Bill Messner-Loebs (Writer/Artist: on Wonder Woman, Flash, Justice League) "All the mainstream reporters, even as they mention the huge box office opening, can't keep from saying how much the critics hated it. Every Science Fiction or Superhero movie gets the same treatment, until success and age scrubs away the stain of popularity." Jerry Ordway (Writer/Artist: Adventures of Superman, Power of Shazam!, Justice Society of America) "I really enjoyed the movie, with some...

What do whales have to do with comics? I’m glad you asked.
According to this study, in times of trouble, whales turn to the post-menopausal females to lead them. They trust these elderly females to know where the food is.
Besides humans, whales are the only other mammals to live after menopause, sometimes decades longer. Males tend to die at 60, but it isn’t unusual to find a female whale at age 90 or more.
(For the record, but without any evidence whatsoever, I like to think whales would also respect a male who lived to be 90. Just saying.)
There’s a lot of money going into comic book companies lately. Valiant just entered a partnership rumored to be worth nine figures. That means at least $100,000,000. Another company, Black Mask plans to grow its audience, not just with comics, but with videos and movies. That kind of outreach isn’t cheap.

After many months of speculation, hints and teases, Dwayne Johnson has finally confirmed that he will indeed be playing super-villain Black Adam in the upcoming Shazam, which will be an adaptation of the DC comic of the same name. We knew for a while that he would be appearing in the film, but until today, we weren’t sure if he’d be playing the titular hero or the villain.
For those unfamiliar with the source material, Shazam is the alter ego of Billy Batson, who’s also known as Captain Marvel. He gets his nickname due to the fact that shouting the word “Shazam” allows him to transform into a “costumed man with the power of six mythological figures (Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury, hence the word Shazam).” He gains this power by encountering a wizard named Shazam at an early age, who gives him the ability...

Growing up, Saturday morning television meant cartoons and nothing but cartoons. By the 1970s, though, live-action bits crept in, starting with Christopher Glenn’s In the News interstitials on CBS along with silly things like The Banana Splits and H.R. Puffenstuff. In 1974, though, Filmation cleverly blended the two as it took the Big Red Cheese from comics to television. Shazam! debuted in the fall of 1974 with Michael Gray as Billy Batson, charged by the animated gods with their powers to fight crime in the adult body of Captain Marvel.
Last year, Warner Archive released the complete series on DVD and it is as charming as ever in its simplicity. In a mere thirty minutes, Billy and Mentor (Les Tremayne) rode the highways of California in their Rv and when danger struck, the magic lightning let Bill become the hero (Jackson Bostwick). The effects were little better than when George Reeves...

Take another look @ images and synopsis from DC Comics' "Man of Steel" movie prequel, featuring 'Kara Zor-El', aka 'Supergirl', written by Sterling Gates and illustrated by Jerry Ordway, connecting to the upcoming "Batman Vs Superman" feature:
"...the mystery of the empty, open 'cryo-pod' in the movie 'Man of Steel' is no mystery at all:
"...the sarcophagus' missing incumbent is 'Kara Zor-El', aka 'Supergirl'.
"Set in the 'Krypton' planet's pre-apocalypse past, 20,000 years ago, Kara faces tragedy, battling Krypton’s first murderer in centuries, 'Dev-Em' and terraforming in a 'Fortress of Solitude' scout craft.
"But Dev-Em’s interference, leads to the accident that plants her ship under the ice on 'Ellesmere Island'. A dream in cryo-sleep hints at the powers in store for her under the influence of Earth’s yellow sun..."

I may be behind the eight-ball here, but last month much blogging, Facebook and Tumblr posts and Twitter accounts were ablaze with comics artist Tess Fowler’s account of sexual harassment at the 2007 San Diego Comic Convention – a comics pro used the age-old pretense of being interested in her work to try and get her to come up to his room, and when Tess declined, he then went about insulting her work, her cosplay and talking bullshit about her to other male comics professionals and anybody else who would listen on the convention floor, i.e., in public.
Yeah, I know I’ve written about this subject before, and so has Heidi MacDonald over at The Beat, Colleen Doran on her own blog, former Dark Horse editor Rachel Edidin on her Tumblr site Postcards From Space, Jill Pantozzi at The Mary Sue, and Corrina Lawson on her site, Geek Mom.
