This is Day 106 of the WGA strike and Day 33 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
A backup singer featured in the Oscar-winning 2013 documentary 20 Feet from Stardom had center stage on Tuesday morning at a musical picket line outside NBCUniversal headquarters in Manhattan. On a crowded thoroughfare at Rockefeller Center, Janice Pendarvis led other vocalists and several dozen SAG-AFTRA picketers in call-and-response verses and choruses of the protest anthem, “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me ’Round.”
It was the first of three solidarity marches uniting musicians and actors on SAG-AFTRA’s Tuesday pickets schedule, with events also happening in Nashville and Los Angeles. In New York, Pendarvis marched and harmonized with her 20 Feet co-star Lisa Fischer as well as singer and former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Peppermint. They were joined on the picket line by Juno and The Umbrella Academy star Elliot Page.

On the latest offering from his upcoming album The New Faith, Jake Blount transforms an ages-old folk standard most commonly associated with Bessie Jones into a contemporary tale about taking the planet for granted in the face of the climate crisis.
“Once There Was No Sun,” Blount said in a statement, “is an invitation to reflect on the impermanence, fragility and beauty of a world we too often take for granted.”
Channeling some of the same feelings of amazement and gratitude that Jones herself has said inspired her recording of the song,...

Another apocalypse; another side of Bob Dylan. The man really knows how to pick his moments. Dylan has brilliantly timed his new masterwork for a summer when the hard rain is falling all over the nation: a plague, a quarantine, revolutionary action in the streets, cities on fire, phones out of order. Rough and Rowdy Ways is his first batch of new songs in 8 years, and it’s an absolute classic—it has the bleak majesty of latter-day Dylan albums like Modern Times and Tempest, yet it goes beyond them,...

Bruce Springsteen reflected Wednesday on the protest movement erupting across the nation in the wake of Minneapolis man George Floyd’s death. He said, “We remain haunted, generation after generation, by our original sin of slavery.”
Springsteen made his comments on SiriusXM as part of his ongoing Bruce Springsteen — From His Home to Yours series on E Street Radio.
The songs he picked in the two-hour broadcast reflected his views on political protest and racial injustice.
He began with his own 41 Shots (American Skin), which he wrote about the death of Guinean immigrant Amadou Diallo in a confrontation with the New York Police Department.
“Eight minutes,” Springsteen said. “That song is almost eight minutes long. That’s how long it took George Floyd to die with a Minneapolis officer’s knee buried into his neck. That’s a long time. That’s how long he begged for help and said he couldn’t breathe.

Wandering the hallways in the depths of the Macon City Auditorium, Chuck Leavell was just moments away from taking the stage for the Capricorn Revival concert at the historic Georgia venue.
“To see all of this come back to life is nothing short of a miracle,” Leavell told Rolling Stone before sitting behind his keyboards as the musical director of the showcase, the official relaunch of the former Capricorn Records studio and the groundbreaking label that’s been dormant for years, its original Macon studio abandoned for decades.

It’s a safe bet that when Woodstock co-founder Michael Lang approached Watkins Glen International to host the still-up-in-the-air Woodstock 50 festival this summer, he had visions of Summer Jam in his head. On July 28th, 1973, a mere four years after Woodstock, a concert at the same upstate New York racetrack featuring only the Allman Brothers, the Band, and the Grateful Dead drew an estimated 600,000 people — enough to earn it the Guinness World Record for the most attendees at a pop music festival. By comparison, Woodstock attracted a minuscule 250,000 people, according...

The Walking Dead, Season 3, Episode 13: “Arrow on the Doorpost”
Written by Ryan C. Coleman
Directed by David Boyd
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on AMC
You have to wonder if tonight’s episode entitled “Arrow on the Doorpost” has any relation to one of Bob Dylan’s masterpieces; an antithesis to the American Dream, Dylan’s dirge “Blind Willie McTell” is about a nation that is condemned.
I suspect that the majority of The Walking Dead’s audience will write this off as one of those episodes in which not much happens. And for once, they are right.
Following last week’s brilliant side-trip episode “Clear,” The Walking Dead once again abandons what was once a weekly formula of jumping back and forth from the prison and Woodbury, and settles on a new locale. “Arrow on the Doorpost” may be low on action but serves a purpose in returning...

Any excuse to hear Bob Dylan play live is a pleasure. The experience is made all the more pleasurable when it's in the service of honoring filmmaker Martin Scorsese.
Such was the case at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards on Thursday (January 12) when Scorsese was selected as the Music + Film honoree. After a scorching montage that touched on not only his feature films but his excellent work in musical documentaries — from the Band's "Last Waltz" to the Rolling Stones' "Shine a Light" — Dylan took the stage to perform "Blind Willie McTell," a tune included in Scorsese's PBS documentary series "The Blues."
The two artists' connection goes back further though, back to the 2005 doc "No Direction Home,...

While Miley Cyrus isn't the first person to come to mind when making a wishlist of artists to cover Bob Dylan songs, we have to admit -- we're really looking forward to this album.
Miley and a host of her contemporaries have joined forces to pay tribute to both Bob Dylan and Amnesty International with a new cover album. The record, titled "Chimes of Freedom," features a huge variety of artists -- from Pete Seeger to Ke$ha.
"Glee" star Darren Criss even makes a contribution to the four-disc compilation, covering New Morning with his brother, Chuck Criss, and his band the Freelance Whales. The jam-packed album, which "salutes Amnesty International's 50th anniversary and life-saving human rights work," is set for a January 24 release. Check out the list of songs and artists below to see which classic your favorite singer will be covering.

Would Bob Dylan stop his punishing schedule for Martin Carthy's samurai sword or a slice of Alela Diane's apple pie? We asked some famous fans to come up with the perfect gift for him…
Geoff Dyer: writer
What I propose is this: that on 24 May, at 7pm BST precisely, we all throw open our windows and – in homes, cars or bars around the world – play a Dylan track on our stereos or iPods. Checking a photocopy of his birth certificate I see that Robert Zimmerman was born at 9.05pm, but 7pm is a good time because, well, it chimes with 70. It also means that a good part of the planet can join in the gift-celebration at the same moment (11am in California). The choice of track is up to you. Some people will go for anthems like "Blowin' in the Wind" that I can't bear to listen to or...
