Exclusive: New Regency, Bold Films and Permut Productions’ Chippendales movie, which tells the wild story about the male exotic dancing enterprise, is gaining momentum. Sources tell Deadline that Seth Rogen and Elle Fanning are in talks to join the cast. Dev Patel is already on board to star with Craig Gillespie set to direct. If deals close, the project would mark a reunion for Rogen and Gillespie, who just wrapped production on the anticipated Pam and Tommy series for Hulu that bows in February. New Regency is co-financing Chippendales with Bold Films.
David Permut, who has been shepherding the project for two decades, will produce with New Regency and Bold Film. David Litvak, Gary Michael Walters, Michel Litvak and Svetlana Metkina of Bold Films are also producing.

A lifelong personal passion of Metcalf’s, The Vapors tells the unknown story of Hot Springs, Arkansas – America’s forgotten capital of vice. Home to healing waters, dozens of churches, and America’s original national park as well as illegal gambling, countless backrooms and brothels, and some of the country’s most bald-faced criminals. For decades, Hot Springs was a pocket of sin in the buckle of the Bible Belt. Exclusive: Fox/Disney has attached Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi to “crack” Flash Gordon, as an animated feature film.
I had heard that the inventive filmmaker Waititi was signing on to write and direct, but his camp indicates it’s too early to gauge exactly what his role would be. The director is in post on Jojo Rabbit, his scripted adaptation of the Christine Leunens novel, a satire in which a young boy in Hitler’s army discovers that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl from the Nazis. Despite the ruthless nationalism in the air, the youth is torn and one of this voices guiding him is his idiot imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler — Waititi plays him.
Waititi recently extricated himself from another animated film, Bubbles, the Netflix stop motion project. Even though the film went in a $20 million package after ferocious bidding during the 2017 Cannes market for a Black List script by Isaac Adamson,...

For some time now, Taika Waititi has been mulling over his stop-motion animated idea for a movie about the life of Michael Jackson through the eyes of his beloved pet chimp, Bubbles.
I love Taika Waititi, but this sounds unnecessary. Waititi was the first one to depart the project, which caused Netflix to pull the plug altogether as having Waititi attached was probably the only appealing thing about the movie. Here’s a previously released description of the story:
"A baby chimp is adopted by pop star Michael Jackson. Narrating his own story, Bubbles the Chimp details his life within The King of Pop’s inner circle through the scandals that later rocked Jackson’s life and eventually led to Bubbles’ release."
Waititi still has fond things to say about the Isaac Adamson written script, as he was quoted recently as saying:

We all knew this was coming. Bubbles, Taika Waititi‘s long-gestating stop-motion movie about Michael Jackson’s chimpanzee, is officially dead. Isaac Adamson wrote the script, which is a kind of biopic of the late King of Pop told from the point of view of his pet chimp. Waititi was set to co-direct with Mark Gustafson, with Netflix distributing. However, […]

Taika Waititi’s busy schedule that includes the awards-season release of Fox Searchlight’s Jojo Rabbit means he is stepping away from plans to direct Bubbles, the stop-motion animated film that tracks the life of Michael Jackson through the eyes of the King of Pop’s pet chimpanzee. With Waititi off the project, we hear Netflix is pulling out of the project as well.
It is hard to imagine that the shocking abuse allegations made in the HBO docu Leaving Neverland by two men who as youths said they were molested by the singer during sleepovers, isn’t playing a part in the cratering of this intriguing project. After all, Netflix paid a whopping $20 million for the property in an auction held during 2017 Cannes. One might only imagine what Bubbles might have seen if there is truth in those accusations that have been vehemently denied by Jackson’s estate.

He has written the script with Patrick McHale (Over the Garden Wall and Adventure Time), and will co-direct with Mark Gustafson (Fantastic Mr. Fox). Way back in 2014, when Donald Trump just said racist stuff about the president on Twitter instead of actually being the president on Twitter, we reported that Ben Stiller was going to appear in a biopic about the rise and fall of Indian immigrant Somen Banerjee and Chippendales, the wildly popular all-male stripper revue he started. Stiller was set to play Nick DeNoia, Banerjee’s business partner and—spoiler alert—eventual murder victim, and now, finally, the project is moving forward.
According to Deadline, Dev Patel is in talks to play Banerjee, and writer Isaac Adamson (who wrote that movie about Bubbles the chimp) is taking a new pass at the script. Stiller is also still attached to Chippendales (which seems to be the working title), so we’ll finally get to see him in the movie that Deadline refers to as “Magic Mike meets Scarface.”...

Scarface and Magic Mike look like coming together for the Chippendales origin movie...
The backstory of 1980s male stripping group The Chippendales is quite a dark one. Even as their act was playing to audiences around the world, there was a backdrop of murders, racketeering and more. And a new film – that’s already being described as a real-life Boogie Nights – is set to bring that story to the big screen.
The movie is being penned by Isaac Adamson, and is set to mix up Magic Mike and Scarface to tell the tale. And we’ve got the first two faces in the cast for the film.
Dev Patel will be playing Steve Banerjee, who turned a run-down L.A. bar into a male exotic dance bar. Then there’s Ben Stiller, taking on the role of Nick DeNoia, who recruited the Chippendales and choreographed their shows.

A year ago, most people would have assumed that Ben Stiller was in director’s jail, suffering from the critical and commercial failure of “Zoolander 2,” in which he also starred. Instead, he went to television. Holed up in his Red Hour Films studio in Los Angeles, Stiller’s currently developing the Showtime miniseries “Escape From Dannemora,” with the intention of directing all eight episodes. And when he takes a break, it’s not for another “Night at the Museum” movie. He’s heading to a film festival.
For over 20 years, the Nantucket Film Festival has benefited from the support of Stiller and his famous family, including his parents Jerry Stiller and late mother Anne Meara, emphasizing two areas that Ben Stiller knows well: Comedy and screenwriting. At Nantucket, he regularly hosts the All-Star Comedy Roundtable — but this year, perhaps signaling his shift in focus, he’s hosting the Screenwriter Tribute, which will honor “Spotlight” director Tom McCarthy.
See More Storytelling, Of All Kinds, Showcased at the Nantucket Film Festival
“Tom McCarthy for me epitomizes the kind of smart and emotional character-oriented storyteller that movie industry needs today,” he said in an interview ahead of the festival. “I think it’s important — in this day of huge, effects-driven franchises — to support and celebrate human stories that don’t center on aliens or robots.”
Much of Stiller’s recent work reflects that ethos. In May, he appeared in Noah Baumbach’s “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Collected”), a well-received dramedy that marked his first collaboration with the filmmaker since “While We Were Young.” It was a welcome return to one of the best actor-director relationships in Stiller’s filmography, one that taps into his penchant for affable klutzes without devolving into cheap jokes.
“I’m happy someone is making the edgy, character-oriented dramas and comedies that are the kinds of movies I grew up watching,” Stiller said. “I hope the studios will get with that program.”
In the meantime, he has embraced the changing landscape: His next starring role comes with “Brad’s Status,” writer-director Mike White’s new Amazon-produced feature, and “The Meyerowitz Stories” will premiere on Netflix later this year.
Like a lot of people, he’s not thrilled with Netflix’s day-and-date model, which minimizes the theatrical life of its movies in favor of appealing home viewers. “I love movies and want to see those kinds of movies in the theater,” he said, but acknowledged the realities of a marketplace that has increasingly allowed for more sophisticated storytelling with the new digital platforms — and, again, television. “Most of our projects are smaller budget and independent-oriented,” he said, addressing the productions currently being developed at Red Hour. “It’s harder to get those movies made now. Thankfully, television is a place for that now.”
He won’t directly acknowledge it, but the response to “Zoolander 2,” with its sophomoric humor and at least one broad joke that offended the Lgbtq community, seems to have driven him back to the more substantial side of his career. Stiller’s been through career crises — cult hit “The Cable Guy” and “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” weren’t exactly blockbuster successes — but this time, he has a range of work in the pipeline that taps into his penchant for more dramatic fare. “Escape from Dannemora,” which focuses on the real-life prison break by inmates Richard Matt and David Sweat in upstate New York, suggests an underlying desire to exercise his filmmaking chops with serious, engaging material.
As a director, Stiller is more auteur than meets the eye. Starting with “Reality Bites” in 1994, he has continually focused on desperate, self-involved Americans driven to neurotic extremes by the boundaries that society places on them. That theme took on cartoonish extremes in the undervalued “Cable Guy” and an ambitious lyrical depth in “Walter Mitty,” while the first “Zoolander” turned the absurd competitive agendas of the fashion industry inside out. The sequel simply took that joke too far, but it may have been necessary to draw Stiller back to the kind of projects that suit him best. “I think I’m more interested in movies I can relate to on a personal level,” he said.
That has extended to his interest in new talent. Asked to single some of the rising filmmakers he admires, he started by citing young screenwriters — Michael Mitnik, whose Alfonso Gomez-Rejon-directed “The Current War” comes out later this year, and Isaac Adamson, whose Blacklist screenplay “Bubbles” (about Michael Jackson’s famous chimp) is currently being produced by Netflix. He’s also keen on the writing contributions to “Dannemora” by Brett Johnson, whose previous credits are primarily in television.
So where does that leave Stiller’s career in comedy? “Right now, we are in couples therapy,” he said. “But I am optimistic.”
The Nantucket Film Festival runs June 21 – 26.

Netflix is nearing a deal for Bubbles, a Black List script detailing the life of the late Michael Jackson from the perspective of his beloved pet monkey.
Isaac Adamson penned the script, an untraditional biopic, which was the top title on the 2015 Black List.
Taika Waititi, who directed the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok, will co-helm the stop-animation feature with Mark Gustafson. Sources say the deal is near $20 million and is for worldwide rights.
The film is expected to resemble Charlie Kaufman's Anomalisa (2015), utilizing stop-animation technology, specifically the form of replacement animation, which combines 3D printing and puppetry. End Cue's...

Much like his comedy, it’s difficult to predict what writer-director Taika Waititi will do next. After his smash hit in New Zealand, Boy, he followed it up with the vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows, then jumped into the adventure Hunt For The Wilderpeople before helming the latest Marvel blockbuster, Thor: Ragnorak. As post-production work continues on that November release, he’s now found a new, quite unexpected project.
Waititi will direct a stop-motion film based on the life of Michael Jackson‘s pet chimp, Bubbles, according to Screen Daily. In association with Rocket Science, the coming-of-age tale is penned by Isaac Adamson, and topped the Black List of best unproduced screenplays back in 2015. Taking the unique angle of the chimp actually being the narrator of the film, it’ll be produced by Dan Harmon’s Starburns Industries, also behind Anomalisa.

Taika Waititi isn’t one to wait idly between projects. He’s still deep in post-production on Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, yet the writer/director/actor has already lined up his next gig. Alongside Mark Gustafson, he’ll co-direct Bubbles, a biopic centered around Michael Jackson’s chimp of the same name, based on Isaac Adamson’s acclaimed Black List screenplay.
How does one (or two) direct a monkey biopic, you might ask? Well, you animate it. Specifically, with stop-motion animation, in the vein of 2015’s perfectly phenomenal, incredibly powerful and totally, hilariously bizarre Anomalisa. The film will be brought to life through Starburns Industries, the very animation company which marvellously brought Anomalisa to existence. Here’s hoping they find the same success with this completely unusual, but deeply original and offbeat coming of age story as they did with their previous feature length triumph.

On the list of projects we figured would never get made, “Bubbles” is pretty high up there. The script by Isaac Adamson topped the 2015 Black List, and it’s certainly bold stuff, but given that it touched upon the terrain of Michael Jackson, we figured the potential controversy might be too great for anyone to touch it (just look at the episode of “Urban Myths” featuring Joseph Fiennes as the King Of Pop which was yanked from release following mountains of bad publicity).

Palo Alto was neither a sleeper hit or, from what I could tell, much of an overnight sensation, but it did herald the arrival of a new voice — and an addition to the greatest clan of American artists of the last 100 years. It’s good news, then, that Gia Coppola is at work on her follow-up: Variety tell us the director’s partnering with Naomi Watts and Jessica Lange for The Secret Life of the Lonely Doll, a drama based on the true story of Dare Wright. Though the author of beloved children’s book The Lonely Doll, she was rediscovered by a journalist, Jean Nathan, while living in a public hospital four decades after her work’s publication. Community creator Dan Harmon is set to produce a stop-motion animated film called Bubbles. The movie centers around Michael Jackson’s famous chimp, and it will offer a look into Jackson’s life from Bubbles' point of view, Here’s the description of the story from THR:
"A baby chimp is adopted by pop star Michael Jackson. Narrating his own story, Bubbles the Chimp details his life within The King of Pop’s inner circle through the scandals that later rocked Jackson’s life and eventually led to Bubbles’ release."
This sounds like it will be a fascinating movie. The screenplay was written by Isaac Adamson and was on the 2015 Black List of best unproduced screenplays. The stop-motion in the film is said to be in the same vein as Charlie Kaufman’s Anomalisa. They used 3D printed puppets to bring the characters to life and give the character a unique life-like appearance.

It's far from an official Michael Jackson biopic, but the singer's life will be told on screen through the eyes of his pet chimp in Bubbles.
Dan Harmon, the man behind Community, has signed up a screenplay that’s set to tell the story of Michael Jackson – through the eyes of his pet chimpanzee, Bubbles.
Attempting in any way to do a biopic of Jackson would bring with it substantive rights and legal issues. Bubbles, however, will tell Jackson’s story, ‘without needing permission’.

Fresh on the heels of the surreal romance Anomalisa, Dan Harmon is bringing that stop-motion-animation magic to tackle another kind of relationship: the one between Michael Jackson and his pet chimpanzee.
As Deadline Hollywood reports, the Community creator recently picked up the screenplay for Bubbles, which tells Jackson's life story through the eyes of the famous chimp who lived in style at the Neverland Ranch after the singer adopted him from a research facility in 1983.
