Nearly 90 Jewish leaders in Missouri have signed an open letter to Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) urging him to drop his support for Harrison Butker, after the Kansas City Chiefs kicker spread “one of the world’s oldest and most recognizable antisemitic lies” in his controversial commencement speech at Benedictine College.
Butker’s speech at the Catholic institution generated immediate controversy for promoting retrograde conservative views, such as suggesting women in the audience should embrace their roles as a wives and mothers.

Pope Francis has come under fire after reportedly using a vulgar and derogatory term about members of the LGBTQ community during a closed-door meeting with Italian bishops.
According to reports from two of Italy’s leading newspapers, La Repubblica and Corriere della Sera, the 87-year-old pontiff made the offensive remark as he reiterated the Catholic Church’s stance against allowing gay men to be ordained as priests.
The publications quoted Francis as saying seminaries, or priesthood colleges, “are already too full of ‘frociaggine,'” an Italian slur roughly translated as “f—–ness.”
While the Vatican has not responded to requests for comment, the alleged May 20 incident has drawn widespread condemnation from LGBTQ advocates and liberal Catholics alike.
The reports indicate some unnamed bishops suggested Francis, an Argentine native, may not have realized the full offensiveness of the Italian term he used. However, critics argue the pope’s language promotes discriminatory attitudes regardless of intent.

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker kicked the hornet’s nest last weekend when he encouraged the women of Benedictine College’s 2024 graduate class to embrace their roles as wives and homemakers rather than putting their degrees to use. While the speech drew widespread criticism for his characterization of women and LGBTQ+ people, Butker also promoted an insidious piece of antisemitic misinformation pertaining to legislation in Congress.

On the heels of the wonderful 2019 The Two Popes, in which Anthony Hopkins starred as Pope Benedict XVI in an imagined conversation with Jonathan Pryce’s future Pope Francis, Hopkins is once again involved in the same kind of cinematic historical fictional meeting as founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud, who is engaged in a private debate with The Chronicles of Narnia author and theologian C.S. Lewis (played by Matthew Goode) on the existence of God. As with The Two Popes, there is no proof whatsoever that any meeting ever took place, but it clearly provides lots of material to wrap your head around. That is exactly what Mark St. Germain did in creating his 2009 play Freud’s Last Session, which was built on the 1967 Harvard lectures of Dr. Armond M. Nicholi Jr in his presentation “The Question of God: C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud Debate God, Love, Sex, and the Meaning of Life.

After a string of run-ins with Catholicism, Queen of pop Madonna has poked fun at the Pope by wearing a hoodie showing him with flaming wings. In a nod to her famous quote “I would like to see the Pope wearing my T-shirt,” Madonna has been sporting a black hoodie embroidered with an image of the Catholic leader wearing a Madonna-branded robe — with the red in the picture inspired by the Jewish mysticism movement Kabbalah.

Agnieszka Holland is headed to the Vatican for a screening of her migrant crisis drama Green Border, following its selection for its 27th Tertio Millenio Film Festival in November.
The Polish director will also receive the festival’s Special Fuoricampo Prize in the Vatican Library on November 13, ahead of the screening in the presence of top Vatican representatives.
The news follows in the wake of a political backlash and online hate campaign against Holland and the film in Poland, where its depiction of the mistreatment of migrants on its border with Belarus has touched a raw nerve with the country’s right-wing government.
News of the Vatican honor went viral in the devoutly Roman Catholic country and provoked consternation on government-affiliated media outlets.

Former Pope Benedict XVI, the first pontiff to resign in nearly 600 years rather than hold office for life, died Saturday, the Vatican announced in a statement. He was 95.
“With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican,” the Director of the Press Office of the Holy See, Matteo Bruni said.
Benedict made the stunning announcement in 2013 that he planned to step down as pope, citing his “advanced age,” saying he no longer had the strength to lead the church. He spent his final years in a converted monastery at the Vatican, residing in the same place as his successor Francis, an unprecedented situation which became the inspiration for the 2019 Netflix film The Two Popes. Anthony Hopkins portrayed Benedict in the Oscar-nominated film.

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, the shy German theologian who tried to reawaken Christianity in a secularized Europe but will forever be remembered as the first pontiff in 600 years to resign from the job, died Saturday. He was 95.
Pope Francis will celebrate his funeral Mass in St. Peter’s Square on Thursday, an unprecedented event in which a current pope will celebrate the funeral of a former one.
Benedict stunned the world on Feb. 11, 2013, when he announced, in his typical, soft-spoken Latin, that he no longer had the strength to run the 1.2 billion-strong Catholic Church that he had steered for eight years through scandal and indifference.
His dramatic decision paved the way for the conclave that elected Francis as his successor. The two popes then lived side-by-side in the Vatican gardens, an unprecedented arrangement that set the stage for future “popes emeritus” to do the same.

Fernando Meirelles' 2019 film "The Two Popes" is, in fact, mostly about one pope. Historically, it traces the timeline of the Roman Catholic Church from the death of Pope John Paul II in 2005 and the subsequent ascendency of Pope Benedict XVI to the position. Benedict XVI was pope infamously decided to abdicate the papacy in 2013, something a pope had not done since Pope Gregory Xii in 1415. Benedict was succeeded by the current pope, Francis (no Roman numeral), and "The Two Popes" traces his history as the young priest Jorge Mario Bergoglio surviving various bouts of political strife in his native Argentina. Juan Gervasio Minujín plays the...

A scripted series about legendary rock band U2 is in early development at Netflix, Variety has confirmed with sources.
JJ Abrams is attached to executive produce the project under his Bad Robot banner, with “Bohemian Rhapsody” writer Anthony McCarten onboard to write the script. Warner Bros. Television, where Bad Robot is currently under an expansive overall deal, will produce. It is unclear at this time exactly how involved U2 would be in the project.
Exact plot details for the show are currently under wraps, but given McCarten’s involvement it seems logical to assume that the show would delve into the history of the band.
Reps for Netflix, Warner Bros. TV, and Bad Robot declined to comment.

Let’s toast Sir Anthony Hopkins for making history as the oldest nominee ever to compete for a Best Actor trophy and also now is the oldest champion. The 83-year-old Welshman won for his role as an elderly patriarch in the throes of increasingly debilitating dementia in “The Father.” He beat the nomination record held for 21 years by Richard Farnsworth, who was 79 when he was recognized for his lead performance in 1999’s “The Straight Story.” He also took over the Best Actor record of oldest winner from Henry Fonda (“On Golden Pond”).
Hopkins previously won the Best Actor prize for his portrait of the diabolical Hannibal Lecter in 1991’s “The Silence of the Lambs” and would go to be nominated as a male lead as a reticent butler in 1993’s “The Remains of the Day” and as the disgraced 37th U.S. president in 1995’s “Nixon.” Hopkins also competed in the supporting category twice,...

Evgeny Afineevsky’s documentary on Pope Francis goes one further than the recent Wim Wenders film by discussing child abuse, but is still another baffling act of hagiography
Pope Francis was recently bathed in movie love, courtesy of Fernando Meirelles’s The Two Popes, with its excellent performances from Jonathan Pryce as Pope Francis, and Anthony Hopkins as the now emeritus Pope Benedict XVI; this film sentimentally imagined a pontiff bromance between the outgoing conservative and incoming liberal. The truth might be more complicated. Before that, there was Wim Wenders’s deeply respectful documentary Pope Francis: A Man of His Word, which paid tribute to Francis’s new engagement with issues such as the climate crisis, refugees and inequality.
Now there is another docu-celebration, from the Oscar-nominated director Evgeny Afineevsky (Winter on Fire), who perhaps has had direct interview access with his subject, though it isn’t clear; there is...

This is Pitt’s fourth nomination as an actor, and his first acting Oscar win. Previously, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 1996 for “12 Monkeys,” for Best Actor in 2009 for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” for Best Actor in 2012 for “Moneyball.”
As a producer, he has three Best Picture nominations: “Moneyball” (2012), “12 Years a Slave” (2014), and “The Big Short” (2016). He won for “12 Years a Slave,” which was his first ever Oscar win.

In Netflix's The Two Popes, screenwriter Anthony McCarten expertly choreographs a complex verbal dance between Pope Benedict XVI and Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, the archbishop of Buenos Aires who would become his successor, Pope Francis. The intense and intellectual debate about the role of God and the church that takes place over the course of several days is a dialogue, let alone a premise, that even McCarten admits is presumptuous. "I'm speculating on what these two highly intelligent, articulate men might have said to each other in the privacy of these rooms," he says. "Even the idea ...

Did “The Two Popes” just miss out on a Best Picture Oscar nomination? That’s what a leading 48% of readers believe who voted in our our recent poll. You see, Academy Awards voters are allowed to nominate 10 movies for Best Picture, but this year they decided only to recognize nine: “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story,” “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite.” Had they nominated the maximum, our readers think “The Two Popes” would have nabbed that 10th slot. Talk about a true Oscars tragedy!

Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins both earned Oscar nominations this week for their acclaimed Netflix movie The Two Popes — but what do the two popes themselves think?

From The Irishman to Parasite, we round up where you can watch all the Oscar nominees available for streaming and digital download.
The Oscar nominees for the 92nd Academy Awards have been announced, and 2019 has been an impressively strong year for film. You don’t have to look much further than Bong Joon-ho’s meditation on class and capitalism in Parasite, or Quentin Tarantino’s groovy romancing of Hollywood days gone by, to appreciate the mostly strong quality amongst the nominees this year, big and small. Here’s where you can watch many of them on streaming services.
The Irishman
A good place to start is with Netflix’s frontrunner for Best Picture. More than just a prestige project from a streaming service though, The Irishman is a beautiful and brittle eulogy offered by Martin Scorsese toward his legacy—and a final, exacting judgment on the gangsters and wiseguys associated with it.

In 2011 the Academy Awards changed the number of Best Picture nominees to be a sliding scale between five and 10, with either eight or nine being nominated ever since. Of this year’s notable also-rans, vote in our poll below to let us know which one You think was #10 on Oscar voters’ ballots.

Every year people complain to me about the quality of movies hitting theaters, and every year I tell them they’re watching the wrong stuff. Sure, there’ve been some fun blockbusters this year, as Us, Joker and Avengers: Endgame were all a blast, and all made enough money to turn a third world country into a first world country. But they weren’t what I would consider the “best” films of the year.
Out of the 175 titles to choose from, picking 15 wasn’t easy. There were so many options: marvelous epics, classic comedies, teen comedies, documentaries, space odysseys, Disney remakes, art house classics, more remakes, romances, even more remakes and whatever the hell Midsommar was. All of these varying entities came together to make for a varying year. But the best of the best made it all worth it.

Catholic-raised Anthony McCarten tells Ben Dalton how the process led him to reassess popes Francis and Benedict XVI
”In the classic dialectic, you have to equip both sides of the argument with equal power.” This is how screenwriter Anthony McCarten describes balancing his feature-length Netflix drama The Two Popes. Directed by Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles (City Of God), the film depicts a series of fictionalised conversations in 2013 between the then Cardinal Bergoglio and Pope Benedict XVI, when the latter became the first pope in more than 600 years to abdicate, and attempted to persuade Bergoglio to succeed him.

Anyone dreading discord over a holiday table can take faith from Fernando Meirelles’ superb, open-hearted acknowledgment of theological divisions. If the diametrically different leaders in “The Two Popes” can find common ground, surely there’s hope for us all.
At first, the schisms in Meirelles’ biopic appear insurmountably deep. We’re brought right into Vatican City in 2005, where a successor must be chosen immediately after the death of Pope John Paul II. As anxious crowds and impatient media buzz together outside, the genial papal conclave looks much like any back-room dealing. There’s campaigning, glad-handing, even a little gossip. The best politician, everyone agrees, is Germany’s Cardinal Ratzinger, who is soon to be known as Pope Benedict XVI (Anthony Hopkins). But even he notices that Argentina’s Cardinal Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce) earned nearly as many votes, despite espousing a markedly different approach.

Jonathan Pryce as the future Pope Francis I and Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict XVI are pure delight in the amusing, engaging drama/comedy Two Popes. Director Fernando Meirelles (City Of God) and screenwriter Anthony McCarten (Darkest Hour) craft delightful odd couple drama/comedy about a meeting Pope Benedict and his successor Pope Francis. Rather than a dry discussion of church policy, Meirelles gives us a charming, kind of buddy comedy, in which these two very different men meet and explore their personal differences and their views on life, to ultimately find common ground.

The most important predictor of the Oscars race has now weighed in. The SAG nominations are decided by actors, which make up the biggest voting body at the Academy Awards. While there are many more SAG voters than Oscar voters, the winners and nominees of the ceremony, held on Jan. 19, usually most closely mirror what happens at the Academy Awards.
That’s good news for Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Bombshell,” a drama about the sexual harassment scandal at Fox News, which allreceived four SAG nominations. “Marriage Story,” a drama centered on a divorcing New York couple, also had strong showing, with three nominations.
In the television categories, Amazon Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” topped the ballot with four nominations. Following closely behind are Amazon’s “Fleabag,” Apple TV Plus’ “The Morning Show,” HBO’s “Game of Thrones...

Terrence Malick’s A Hidden Life is a satisfyingly exhausting experience, an ode to Catholicism in which the viewer is asked to take a moral inventory throughout its three-hour runtime. August Diehl and Valerie Pachner play Franz and Fanny Jägerstätter, respectively, a husband and wife in the alps of Sankt Radegund who are forced by Hitler’s annexation of Austria—and their unwavering Christian conviction—to reject Nazism, and thus lose Franz to a ruthless military trial at the Reichskriegsgericht in Berlin-Charlottenburg on July 6, 1943. He was accused of undermining military morale and executed by guillotine on August 9th of that year. The family was hated in their time but have since become moral exemplars. Franz was even declared a martyr by Pope Benedict XVI and declared a saint.

Acclaimed filmmaker Terrence Malick does something he hasn’t done in years with his new film A Hidden Life — he attempts to tell an actual, old-fashioned story. This may come as good news to those who once celebrated his mastery in such early films as Badlands and Days of Heaven, but may have grown disillusioned by the arty, free-form posturings of his recent years. (See: To the Wonder, Knight of Cups, Song to Song.) In some ways, his latest is a return to form with Malick recounting the true tale of Franz Jäggerstätter (a fine,...

Gold Derby’s users did a great job predicting the Golden Globe nominees, which were announced on Monday morning, December 9. Out of 11 film categories we were forecasting totaling 55 nominations in all, our official odds only missed nine times, and most of those were near misses. But they were misses nonetheless — you can’t win ’em all. Scroll down to see the nominees who took us by surprise, and check out the complete list of nominees here.
Arguably the biggest shock was Todd Phillips‘s Best Director nomination for “Joker.” The controversial filmmaker was nominated ahead of Noah Baumbach (“Marriage Story”), Greta Gerwig (“Little Women”), Taika Waititi (“Jojo Rabbit”) and Pedro Almodovar (“Pain and Glory”), all of whom ranked higher in our odds. He’s joined in that category by expected nominees Martin Scorsese (“The Irishman”), Bong Joon Ho (“Parasite”), Sam Mendes (“1917”) and Quentin Tarantino (“Once Upon a Time in...

Much of the humor of Fernando Meirelles’s fictional encounter between two popes whose ideologies are almost polar opposites comes from what Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI did for amusement. Audience laughs purportedly come from the mysterious idea that “Wow. These heads of church are not gods, they’re not saints, they’re human.” For example in […]

Because you’re not allowed to shoot a work of fiction in the Vatican, production designer Mark Tildesley was tasked with recreating the iconic building for “The Two Popes.” “We used I’d say a 60/40 build vs. location relationship,” he reveals. Although parts of the film were shot in various palaces and buildings around Rome “that are of the same period as the Vatican,” he had to build several rooms from scratch, most notably the Sistine Chapel, the Room of Tears and the Pope’s office. Watch our exclusive video interview with Tildesley above.

But do critics have faith in the religious drama imagining conversations between Pope Benedict XVI (Anthony Hopkins) and the eventual Pope Francis I (Jonathan Pryce)?
As of this writing it has a MetaCritic score of 78 based on 16 reviews counted so far: 13 positive, 3 mixed, none outright negative. The annual Hollywood film festival offers a rich mix of studio contenders, indie discoveries and international gems.
Last week heralded the arrival of AFI Fest, the annual film festival presented by the American Film Institute that combines major studio and independent releases, festival favorites, and noteworthy new films in an eight-day blitz at the famous Tcl Chinese Theatre complex in Hollywood.
More than 125 films screened at this year’s event, and festival organizers proudly proclaimed that more than 51 percent of 2019’s titles were directed by women. In a world where just an estimated 14 percent of the year’s top-grossing films will have women behind the camera, that is a considerable movement in the right direction--especially given the quality of the films that we saw.

Want to see a master class in acting? Watch Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins show how it’s done in The Two Popes, a fiercely moving and surprisingly funny provocation that pivots on speculative conversations between the German John Ratzinger, a.k.a. Pope Benedict XVI (Hopkins), and Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Pryce), the future Pope Francis. In Anthony McCarten’s beautifully written script, the two men — Benedict a lofty aristocrat who prefers classical music, Bergoglio a humble servant with a thing for Abba — struggle to find a unifying bond.

Do the principles of God change with the shifting tides of culture? This theological question is at the heart of The Two Popes. As unanswerable as the question may be, it presents an engaging-if-scattered platform for the spiritual sparring that Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins devour. Directed by Fernando Meirelles with the kind of hyperactivity that worked so well in his kinetic breakthrough City of God, that trait is unfortunately not helped here with Anthony McCarten’s script, which attempts to pack a life’s worth of history in between a few conversations.
The life at the center of the story–which takes place over many decades, but mostly 2012–is that of Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Pryce), who is not shy about his desire for the Catholic Church to change their stodgy, conservative ways. In tackling “The Two Popes,” Fernando Meirelles was excited by the challenge of directing a film that consisted largely of conversations between two holy men. “The dialogue was very nice when I read it,” he recalls of Anthony McCarten‘s script, adapted from his own stage play. But he soon realized that a movie with “two guys talking” about “religion and the church” was in danger of being “very boring.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Meirelles above.

The Netflix release is about the transition of power between the conservative Pope Benedict XVI (Anthony Hopkins) and the more liberal Pope Francis I (Jonathan Pryce). During many intense conversations the two men try to forge an alliance to benefit the Catholic Church into the future. But for Meirelles, the question was “how to make this cinematic, interesting and even entertaining.”
He decided “to make it very intimate.

The British star, 81, who is currently playing Pope Benedict XVI in the Netflix film The Two Popes, opens up in the Dec/Jan issue of Aarp the Magazine about how he has a hard time sitting still.
