At least one of the big companies that distribute CNN via cable or satellite is unnerved by how closely the company’s new live-streaming service looks like its TV network.
Big satellite distributor DirecTV has let executives at Warner Bros. Discovery know via letter that its executives believe the similarities between the two products violate the carriage contract between the two companies, according to a person familiar with the matter. The new CNN streaming service, CNN Max, just launched last week and includes many of programs that run on linear CNN, including “CNN This Morning,” “The Lead With Jake Tapper” and “Anderson Cooper 360.”
The New York Times previously reported the contretemps between DirecTV and Warner Bros. Discovery.
“Wbd maintains strong and meaningful relationships with our affiliate partners. Our partners are aware of and understand our rationale with Max, which is to reach new audiences,” Warner Bros. Discovery said in a statement.

Wbd first announced it was bringing live news from CNN to Max in August.
“We have the broadest and highest quality entertainment offering, and now will include world-leading news as a meaningful addition for all Max subscribers, at no extra charge,” Wbd’s head of streaming J.B. CNN ventured back into streaming on Wednesday with the launch of CNN Max, a service that diverges from its past efforts in the way that it mirrors so much of the schedule of the linear network.
Primetime shows like Erin Burnett OutFront, Anderson Cooper 360 and The Source With Kaitlan Collins, as well as morning programming including Early Start with Kasie Hunt and CNN This Morning are on the scheduled unveiled on Wednesday. CNN’s new streaming product is set to look an awful lot like its familiar cable network.
CNN Max, which debuted Wednesday, has been touted as a way to get news giant’s content out to a increasing number of cord-cutters and consumers who no longer view cable as their primary way to get video entertainment and information. And parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, in the belief, perhaps, that a streaming subscription is just as good as one to a cable or satellite service, is making the bulk of its linear lineup available to the broadband crowd.
The weekday schedule of CNN Max features several new hours led by anchors such as Jim Acosta, Fredricka Whitfield, Rahel Solomon and Jim Scuitto. But a significant chunk of the service is built on CNN’s linear morning, late-afternoon and primetime schedule. When all is said and done, Max viewers will be able...

As CNN races to catch up with the streaming world, its strategy in launching CNN Max — more than a year after the failure of CNN+ — will be a hat trick: offer news on its main subscription platform while preserving as much of its fast-declining linear audience as possible.
The pressing need to get CNN into the streaming space is obvious. Competitors like Fox News have already begun building an audience on their own streaming services. And adding news to the Max platform gives Warner Bros. Discovery a significant leg up over competitors like Netflix and Disney+, which currently do not carry live news at all.
“There is only one CNN and a significant number of U.S. homes have cut the cord. So if you don’t have a robust streaming solution, you can’t reach them,” Dave Morgan, CEO of cross-channel TV advertising firm Simulmedia, told TheWrap.

The new Warner Bros. Discovery streaming platform Max announced Thursday the addition of CNN Max, a 24/7 news service that will be free to subscribers.
The streaming news offering will launch Sept. 27, just over a year after the hastily aborted launch of CNN+. That project, which launched in May of 2022, was shut down three weeks later as the Warner Bros. merger with Discovery was freshly underway.
“CNN Max will leverage CNN’s reporting excellence, global newsgathering, and live programming from CNN US, CNN International, and feature original programming built specifically for Max,” the company said in a Thursday release. “CNN Max will be a new seven-day-a-week/24-hour service and be part of an open beta for news that will enable experimentation with product features, content offerings and original storytelling, all with the input and feedback from the Max community.”
The service will feature known CNN anchors and new programming built specifically for the streaming platform.

CNN, whose brief foray into subscription streaming was snuffed out shortly after the close of the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger in April 2022, is officially getting real estate on Max.
A new offering, CNN Max, will be added to the streaming service in what Warner Bros. Discovery called an “open beta” on September 27. It will consist of a 24/7 stream pulled from the news network’s U.S. and international feeds, with a sprinkling of original fare, with user feedback welcomed. For many reasons, some having to do with contracts with pay-tv operators, it won’t be a full-over-the top version of linear CNN, and certain talent and new shows like the new 9 p.m. hour hosted by Kaitlan Collins will not be in the mix.
Wbd CEO David Zaslav hinted at the new venture during the company’s quarterly earnings call several weeks ago, saying news and sports make SVOD platforms “come alive.

CNN, grappling with shortfalls in linear TV ratings, unveiled a new programming schedule that will put new faces in key weekday slots and launch new weekend programs for veterans Chris Wallace and Christiane Amanpour.
Pamela Brown, Kasie Hunt, Victor Blackwell and Manu Raju are among the journalists who will have new solo-anchored hours. Actor and comedian Bill Cosby, once one of the most revered entertainers in the world, was found guilty Thursday by a jury near Philadelphia of thee counts of aggravated indecent assault against former Temple University employee Andrea Constand in January 2004.
The jury found the comedian guilty of all three counts — penetration with lack of consent, penetration while unconscious and penetration after administering an intoxicant — each punishable by up to 10 years in state prison, though the sentences could be served concurrently.
But that’s not the end of the road for 80-year-old Cosby’s legal battles. In addition to sentencing, the comedian also faces a number of civil cases.

Cosby faces a defamation lawsuit by model Janice Dickinson, who says the comedian drugged and raped her in Lake Tahoe, California, in 1982.
Dickinson, represented by Lisa Bloom, alleges she met with Cosby for dinner to talk about a possible job and get some advice on starting her singing career. According to Dickinson, Cosby offered her a glass of red wine, which she turned down. But Dickinson says that when she complained about menstrual cramps, Cosby offered her a pill, which she accepted. She said at one point she blacked out.
“The last thing I remember was blacking out and Cosby mounting me like the monster he was,” Dickinson told CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield in December 2014.

She said she woke up the next morning knowing she had been raped because her vagina physically hurt.
Dickinson, who testified at Cosby’s retrial, is suing for defamation, saying that, after she came forward with her claims in 2014, Cosby’s team went “on the attack” against her with media statements branding her a liar.
Cosby’s attorneys have appealed the case.

Chloe Goins
Cosby is also facing a lawsuit by former model Chloe Goins.
Goins alleges that the comedian slipped something into her drink when she attended a party at the Playboy Mansion in 2008 and then abused her in a bedroom.
Goins says she blacked out that night, waking up naked in a bedroom as Cosby was licking her toes. She said that Cosby then pulled up his pants and left the room.
Cosby denied the allegation, insisting he was in New York the night in question.
Goins sued Cosby in 2015 but later dismissed her lawsuit in early 2016 without explanation.
However, the former model filed suit again in May 2016, adding Playboy founder Hugh Hefner as a defendant as well as Cosby. According to court documentation seen by TheWrap, the case is currently pending.

Judy Huth
Judy Huth says she was 15 when she met Cosby in 1974 at a Los Angeles park. According to a December 2014 court filing, Huth and her 16-year-old friend told Cosby how old they were, but that didn’t stop Cosby from inviting them to his tennis club and later to the Playboy Mansion, where Huth said he molested her in a bedroom suite.
Though the statute of limitations in Huth’s case expired, she was able to file in 2014 because she was a minor at the time of the alleged assault.
Cosby argued in a countersuit that Huth tried to sell her story to the tabloids a decade ago, which means she was aware of the psychological damages at the time and therefore the statute of limitations is over.
Huth’s attorney, Gloria Allred, told TheWrap on Thursday: “Judy Huth’s case is pending in La County Superior Court Santa Monica. We return to court next month on May 23, to provide the court an update on the outcome of the criminal case. Judy alleges in her lawsuit that she was 15 years old when she was the victim of sexual abuse by Bill Cosby at the Playboy Mansion.”
Defamation Lawsuit by Seven Women
Cosby is also facing a lawsuit in Massachusetts from seven other women, who are suing the comedian for defamation (Cosby has a home in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts). The women say Cosby sexually abused them decades ago and then defamed them when his agents, in their denial of the accusations, branded them liars.
The plaintiffs are Tamara Green, Therese Serignese, Linda Traitz, Louisa Moritz, Barbara Bowman, Joan Tarshis and Angela Leslie.
Cosby is seeking to have their suit dismissed.
A lawyer for Tamara Green told TheWrap on Thursday: “The case has been stayed (put on hold) pending the resolution of the criminal case.”

Janice Dickinson

On Thursday, soon after the guilty verdict on Cosby’s criminal case came down, Bloom tweeted: “What’s next? My defamation case on behalf of Janice Dickinson against Bill Cosby, which we’ve been fighting and Winning for 3+ years, goes on. Mr. Cosby, I’m looking forward to taking your deposition.”

Joan Rivers made it clear during a CNN interview last weekend that she wouldn’t take any crap—which is, in a way, exactly what got her in trouble during a visit to the Late Show With David Letterman on Tuesday.
EW was on the scene as Rivers summoned her trademark inappropriate humor to make even the seasoned Letterman blanch by making a joke about losing out on a Depends commercial to June Allyson, quipping that the ’50s star would shill the adult diapers by saying, “Hi, I’m June Allyson. While I’m talking to you, I’m taking a dump.

He’s seen a lot of craziness during his decades on television but last night (July 8) David Letterman couldn’t handle Joan Rivers' antics on “The Late Show.”
While promoting her new book “Diary of a Mad Woman,” the 81-year-old “Fashion Police” star ended up talking about her recent CNN interview that she walked out on.
Rivers called the chat with anchor Fredricka Whitfield “judgmental, nasty and opinionated- it was just like my wedding night!”
However, when Joan mentioned losing a Depends endorsement because of her outspoken tendencies, Letterman had enough. Rivers made an off-color comment about 1940s actress June Allyson- “Hi I’m June Allyson and while I’m talking to you I’m taking a dump,” and David got up and walked off the set.

"View" co-host Whoopi Goldberg and CNN anchor Don Lemon argued for journalists to say the full n-word on air while reporting stories.
On Saturday, Lemon said that journalists should use the full word while reporting, rather than using the term "n-word."
Lemon said, "I hate saying 'the n-word.' I think it takes the value out of what that word really means. Especially when we're reporting it. And I don't care what color the reporter is. I think someone should say, that person called someone 'nigger,' instead of saying 'the n-word,' because I think it sanitizes it." Goldberg echoed Lemon's sentiments on Tuesday's "View." Goldberg said that using the term "n-word" makes the word sound "cute.
