HBO has renewed the critically acclaimed comedy series Somebody Somewhere for a third season.
Created by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen, Somebody Somewhere is inspired by the life of comedian and singer Bridget Everett and is set in her native Kansas. The series follows Sam (played by Everett), a true Kansan on the surface, but, beneath it all, struggling to fit the hometown mold. Grappling with loss and acceptance, singing is Sam’s saving grace and leads her on a journey to discover herself and a community of outsiders who don’t fit in but don’t give up, showing that finding your people, and finding your voice, is possible. Anywhere. Somewhere. Season two reminds us that families are hard, even the fun ones. Sam and Joel (Jeff Hiller) have settled into a comfy routine. But nothing stays the same forever.
Cast also includes Jeff Hiller (Joel), Mary Catherine Garrison...

HBO is heading back to the Little Apple.
The premium cable outlet has renewed Somebody Somewhere for a third season. The pickup comes a few days after the dramedy starring Bridget Everett and set in Manhattan, Kansas, concluded its seven-episode second season.
“We’re thrilled to announce the third season of the honest and impactful Somebody Somewhere,” said Amy Gravitt, executive vp comedy programming at HBO and Max. “Nothing makes us smile quite like this show, which never fails to remind us that life is made up of the small moments, that family can be chosen, and that dreams don’t have deadlines.”
The series draws relatively modest viewership in relation to some other HBO originals, but it’s been a critical favorite. Season one received an AFI Award as one of the top 10 TV programs of 2022.

Season one of HBO’s Somebody Somewhere largely focused on lead character Sam’s (Bridget Everett) halting attempts to fit back into her Kansas hometown. The trailer for season two of the series suggests she’s feeling at least a little more comfortable there.
The trailer shows that Sam and Joel (Jeff Hiller) have moved in together — “It’s solely a financial arrangement,” Joel says — and settled into a routine. Sam also takes a few more steps to further her singing, approaching her old music teacher for voice lessons.
Hiller also told The Hollywood Reporter that Joel will have a new love interest in season two, played by Tim Bagley (Grace and Frankie). “I originally thought that Joel might get back together with his season one boyfriend, but I think this story is much more interesting,” he said.
The two-minute clip also showcases the series’ mix of comedy and emotion...

More than 400 prominent female writers and showrunners sent a letter today to the heads of the major studios expressing their “grave concerns” about the companies’ “lack of specific production protocols” to protect their workers in anti-abortion states.
The letters, which state that “it is unacceptable to ask any person to choose between their human rights and their employment,” also demanded that the companies “pledge to discontinue all political donations to anti-abortion candidates and political action committees immediately.”
Deadline has obtained a copy of the letter to Netflix, which organizers say was sent to top executives at Amazon Studios, AMC Networks, Apple, Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, , and Warner Bros. Discovery.
The letters, whose signers include Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes, Amy Schumer, Marta Kauffman, Callie Khouri, WGA West vice president Michele Mulroney and WGA West secretary-treasurer Betsy Thomas, said that “this situation raises basic matters of equality, health, and safety in the workplace.

The series revolves around the merger of the world’s largest tech company and an e-commerce giant, creating the richest and most dangerous monopoly ever known. Dave Eggers’ book The Every – a dystopian story about an Amazon-esque company – is set for a TV adaptation with HBO.
The book, which is a follow up to the A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius author’s 2013 book The Circle, which was turned into a Tom Hanks and Emma Watson-fronted film, is being adapted as a half-hour comedy series by Veep co-exec producer Rachel Axler.

The last two Producers Guild of America Awards told us which movies — “Green Book” (2019) and “The Shape of Water” (2018) — would win the Oscar for Best Picture weeks before the Academy Awards. In fact, 21 of the previous PGA Awards winners have then gone on to claim Best Picture victories.
For the 31st annual ceremony slated for Saturday, January 18 at the Hollywood Palladium, we already know the top choice will be at the very least a major front-runner for this year’s Oscar. The PGA’s 10 nominated films are “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “Knives Out,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story,” “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite.” All but “Knives Out” contend at the Oscars for Best Picture.

Much has been made about “Veep” never winning a Golden Globe, but did you know it’s also never won at the Producers Guild Awards? Sure enough, this year’s nomination marks the sixth and final PGA bid for HBO’s political comedy series, which ended its run last May. As this is the era of Peak TV, more and more worthy shows are going to be left out in the cold, we get that. But for “Veep,” a three-time Emmy winner for Best Comedy Series, to never earn recognition from the PGA Awards, this seems like a trend Selina Meyer should veto.

The Producers Guild of America has revealed its nominees in the motion picture and television categories for its 31st Annual Producers Guild Awards; nominees include recent Golden Globe winners “1917,” “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” “Missing Link,” “Succession,” “Fleabag” and “Chernobyl.”
The PGA, which has about 8,200 members, has matched the Oscar for best picture in 21 of its 30 years, including “The Green Book” last year and “The Shape of Water” in 2018.
The PGA uses a preferential balloting system that’s similar to that employed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The PGA and AMPAS both expanded their voting for the top film to 10 nominees in 2009. About three-quarters of the PGA’s Zanuck nominees wind up as Oscar best picture nominees.
On the TV side, among all of the drama and comedy nominees, only “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (last year’s comedy winner) is a repeat from last year.

When the 2019 Emmy Awards nominations were announced two weeks ago, the only thing unconfirmed were the producers. Television Academy officials have now unveiled a new list of nominee names for Comedy Series, Drama Series, TV Movie, Limited Series and more. The annual delay is caused by a need for vetting the submissions to determine the official producer names that are now nominated.
Performers nominated as producers for comedy include Bill Hader, Daniel Levy, Eugene Levy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Natasha Lyonne, Amy Poehler and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Drama stars as producer nominees are Jason Bateman, Will Ferrell, Bob Odenkirk, Sandra Oh and Waller-Bridge. Prior to Season 7, “Veep” dealt with Donald Trump offscreen instead of dealing with him onscreen. Executive producers David Mandel and Julia Louis-Dreyfus fielded repeated questions about how the 2016 election’s unexpected results would affect the political satire, and they repeatedly said, in short, it wouldn’t. It couldn’t. Not yet.
But now it can. This is the first season written after Trump was elected president, and the third episode of the season drills home one of “Veep’s” most prominent points about America under his tenure: Politicians may be awful, but the people are to blame.
It’s a pivotal choice and turning point for a series that’s always skewered our nation’s leaders before its citizens, so let’s look at the framing of “Pledge.” Directed by Morgan Sackett and written by Rachel Axler (both “Veep” veterans since Mandel’s team took over in 2016), the episode opens...

It may be turning 60, but the Television Academy Foundation is hardly showing its age.
The charitable arm of the Television Academy is committed to finding and nurturing burgeoning talent, giving them the resources to both learn from the past and shape the future of television.
Charged with executing that mission is Madeline Di Nonno, chair of the board of directors, and CEO of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. As fast as the industry is moving, she says, it’s imperative that the foundation — and its efforts — keep pace.
“We have to evolve in order to stay relevant,” she says.
The foundation has been re-evaluating all of its programs to make sure the needs of those it aims to serve are being met. Among them are the internship program, which offers job opportunities for 50 students; the College Television Awards, which recognize outstanding work with more than 60 trophies; and the interviews archive,...

The Handmaid’s Tale takes home two prizes in TV category.
Jordan Peele won best original screenplay at the 2018 Writers Guild Awards for Get Out, while James Ivory won the adapted screenplay award for Call Me by Your Name.
The Writers Guild of America, West and the Writers Guild of America, East handed out the prizes at simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York last night (11 February).
Get Out boosted its Oscar chances by triumphing in a strong field including Lady Bird, The Shape Of Water, The Big Sick and I, Tonya. Martin McDonaugh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which made the Oscar shortlist in this category, was not eligible for a WGA award.
The adapted screenplay nominees mirrored the Oscar list, and included Molly’s Game, The Disaster Artist, Logan and Mudbound.

The 2018 Writers Guild of America Awards take place on Feb. 11 with simultaneous ceremonies held in both New York and Los Angeles. Only scripts written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for these awards. As such, these kudos are not the most reliable barometer of the Oscars.
In the past nine years only 59 of the WGA nominees have numbered among the 90 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids. Indeed, 2014’s Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay, “Birdman,” was deemed ineligible. Likewise for one of this year’s leading contenders for that award: “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
On the television side, the leading nominees are “Better Call Saul,” which competes for best drama series writing as well as for two individual episodes and “The Americans,” which is up for both overall drama series writing and an individual episode. Over in comedy, reigning Emmy...

The Producers Guild of America hands out its awards on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018. That is the night before the Screen Actors Guild does the same. Unlike, the latter, which will air on TNT and TBS, the PGA ceremony is not televised. However, it is an equally important stop on the road to the Oscars.
The PGA Awards has an enviable track record at presaging the eventual Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards. The guild and the academy have agreed on 19 of the most recent 28 Best Picture champs. Last year, all nine Oscar nominees for Best Picture numbered among the 10 PGA contenders; only “Deadpool” was snubbed by the academy. The PGA prize went to “La La Land” while the Oscar was (eventually) won by “Moonlight.”

It’s so, so very difficult to determine how long to stick with a series. Some shows get off to a bad start and later find their voice. Others start bad and get worse. Still others are sporadic in quality, for whatever creative reason.
But the list below is meant to help. Whether you’re looking for a new binge and want to know when a season will hit its peak, or you want to sample shows by seeing the best episode first, check out IndieWire’s ranking of the best TV episodes of 2017.
We don’t necessarily endorse starting with the best episodes — especially if it happens to be the season finale — but in a world of “too much TV,” there’s no wrong way to find the next great show. Ranked by episodic quality, these are the 25 best individual half-hours and hour-long entries of the 2017 season.

How I Met Your Mother Season 9, Episode 8 “The Lighthouse”
Written by Rachel Axler
Directed by Pamela Fryman
Airs Monday nights at 8pm Et on CBS
The best thing I can say about “The Lighthouse” is it’s not the worst episode of How I Met Your Mother in 2013. Unfortunately, that’s not saying much: it’s another episode of wasted potential that’s so busy checking off boxes on the narrative checklist it never stops to make any of the stories meaningful. Laden with convenient turns of emotion that culminate in a nice, but completely unearned conclusion, “The Lighthouse” is yet another episode of Himym unable to recognize its own potential.
The most frustrating thing about this season continues to be how underdeveloped characters and their emotions are, while dozens of intertwining “stories” and recurring gags are playing out on-screen. At its heart, “The Lighthouse” is another insight into an increasingly disillusioned Ted,...

2012 Writers Guild Award Nominations
The 2012 Writers Guild Award nominations were announced yesterday and as with the Emmys cable led the drama categories. Previous nominees Boardwalk Empire and Breaking Bad and new series Homeland all racked up 3 nominations in the drama field. The Good Wife is the only network drama featuring in the Drama Series category, with Dexter getting the other slot and sadly Friday Night Lights missed out.
If you're wondering where Mad Men is; the field of eligibility for these awards runs from December, 1 2010 until November 30, 2011. This makes the Writers Guild Awards similar to the Golden Globes rather than the Emmys regarding the submission time frame. The last new episode of Mad Men aired in October 2010 so it can't be included; yes it has been more than a year since there was new episode of Mad Men.
Network fared much better in the comedy front with Emmy success Modern Family...

STRIKE ZONE: LATEST NEWS AND UPDATES
CORRECTED 9:45 a.m. PT Jan. 18
WASHINGTON -- A group of Emmy-winnning writers from "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart," "The Colbert Report" and "The West Wing", along with WGA East president Michael Winship, plan a comedy event at the House Judiciary Committee on Jan. 23 as a way to help lawmakers understand the issues at stake in the strike.
Washington has been sitting on the sidelines as the strike grinds on, but that doesn't mean lawmakers and the writers have been ignoring each other. In November, labor leaders pushed their cause with lawmakers and the FCC when WGA West president Patric Verrone and SAG president Alan Rosenberg met with lawmakers and the FCC in an attempt to educate policymakers on the issues.
"Daily Show" writers Rachel Axler, Tim Carvell, Jason Ross and Kevin Bleyer; "Colbert" writers Michael Brumm, Tom Purcell, Peter Grosz and Peter Gwinn; and "West Wing"'s Allison Abner hope to put a different spin on the issue.
While the writers' mock "State of the Union" debate on the strike and other issues is supposed to be funny, it also will lay out for lawmakers and their aides what is a serious issue, said Margaret Cone, a WGAE representative here.
