Donald Trump’s infamous conversation with former “Access Hollywood” host Billy Bush is enough to make Peter Griffin, the brash, crude blue-collar main character on “Family Guy,” blush. In May 2014, two months after he hosted his =3 web series for the final time, YouTube star Ray William Johnson was revealed as one of the leads in Who’s Driving Doug, an indie film starring former Breaking Bad cast member Rj Mitte. Now, three weeks ahead of the film’s premiere, viewers have received a first look at it thanks to a new trailer.
In Who’s Driving Doug, Mitte plays a handicapped student named Doug who enlists Johnson’s character, Scott, as his personal driver. Together with the third lead character, portrayed by Paloma Kwiatkowski, Doug and Scott embark on a trip to Las Vegas. The film's writer, Michael Carnick, is handicapped himself, and the trailer tells us the story is "inspired by true events." The trailer also dispalys plenty of familiar road movie tropes and a melancholy indie rock soundtrack that includes songs by the band Death Cab For Cutie.

It's been more than eight (!!) long years since "The O.C." signed off the airwaves after its four-season run on Fox, and the Chrismukkah gods must have heard our cries of sorrow: The entire series is now available to stream online, for free, via CW Seed.
The show quietly made its way online on Monday, and fans of Ryan, Seth, Summer, and yes, even Marissa, could barely contain their collective glee. While the series is available on DVD, and individual episodes can be purchased via Amazon and iTunes, this is the first time it's been available via a streaming platform, a head-scratching omission that has now, thankfully, been righted.
While CW Seed may seem like an odd place for the program, which aired on Fox, it likely ended up there instead of on more popular platforms Netflix and Hulu thanks to its rights holder, Warner Bros. Television. The CW, if you'll recall,...

Fresh off the success -- and Reese Witherspoon approval -- of "Cruel Intentions: The Musical" comes word that another beloved piece of pop culture is getting the parody stage show treatment.
Variety reports that teen soap "The O.C." will take the stage for a one-night-only musical extravaganza, also produced by the "Cruel Intentions" parody team, and will apparently offer a meta take on the early 2000s, Southern California-set show. According to the trade, "O.C." creator Josh Schwartz will be a character in the production, though he won't be singing.
The role of Schwartz has already been cast, as have the parts of Cohen family matriarch Kirsten and Marissa's high school flame Luke (who uttered the show's instantly-iconic catchphrase, "Welcome to The O.C., bitch!"). No word yet on who has taken those roles, and who the production is eyeing for the rest of the bunch. (Could Adam Brody just appear as Seth Cohen?...

Once upon a time, filmmakers Spike Jonze and Sofia Coppola were married. While fitting the dreams of film hipster heaven, their marriage ended long before the Internet could freak out about their seemingly perfect union, not unlike the way it did during the twee super marriage of Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard and Zoe Deschanel (it, too, didn't last). "It's not Spike," Coppola insisted in 2003 about Giovanni Ribisi’s portrayal of a character in “Lost In Translation” many felt was a dig at her ex-husband. "But there are elements of him there, elements of experiences. There are elements of me in all the characters." Regardless, people have drawn lots of parallels between Coppola’s “Lost In Translation” and Jonze’s 2013 film, “Her,” starring Joaquin Phoenix. Video essayist Jorge Luengo Ruiz has gone one step further and created “Lost in Translation // Her: An Unloved Story,” a beautiful video...

In the early '00s, the band Death Cab for Cutie became synonymous with a sort of muted adolescent angst. Lead singer Ben Gibbard, whose gentle voice lends a childlike quality to the music, often used opaque lyrics to capture the mystifying passions of young love. The new Death Cab for Cutie album, Kintsugi, is somewhat of a departure. Gibbard's lyrics are more direct and authoritative. It's an album for adults. That said, at 38, Gibbard looks back fondly at the songs from those early Death Cab years. Vulture spoke with him recently about his favorite tracks from the band’s catalogue. It wasn't easy to pick just one song from each record, he said. "They're all my children," but these are a few of the highlights."The Face That Launched 1000 Shits," Something About Airplanes (1998) It’s a song that was written by our friend Jay Chilcote from the Revolutionary Hydra,...

Death Cab For Cutie have been relatively generous ahead of their new album Kintsugi‘s release, offering the video for “Black Sun” and live previews of many of the tracks. Now they’ve shared the studio version for one of the songs they played back last month during a show in their hometown of Seattle. “No Room in Frame” is twangy slice of soft rock with vocalist Ben Gibbard’s vocals at the forefront. Related: Death Cab for Cutie Call the Shots in ‘Black Sun’ Video: Watch The song, like the rest of the album, features guitar work from recently departed founding member and producer Chris Walla. Coincidentally or not, it has a sentimentality. “We’ll both go on being lonely with someone else,” Gibbard sings. Kintsugi, the band’s first album since 2011’s Codes and Keys, is due out March 31.

These days no movie can get away without a tie-in soundtrack. The latest is Fifty Shades of Grey, which brings together everyone from Beyoncé, Sia and Ellie Goulding.

Anvilicious? Oh yeah. Emotionally manipulative? You betcha. Surprisingly effective all the same? Unfortunately, yes, according to EW.com's Lanford Beard. Which is how we came upon this week's PopWatch Confessional question: What's the song that's had a surprising, embarrassing emotional effect on you? Lanford Beard, staff editor: Between all its walk-and-talks, Network rip-offs, and "women be klutzy" gags, The Newsroom's first season actually took on a few actual news events,...

Men Behaving Badly made a brief return in the form of a one-off sketch last night (October 13) as part of the Stand Up To Cancer telethon on Channel 4.
One of the highlights of the original series was Gary (Martin Clunes) and Tony's (Neil Morrissey) quest to find a new pub after The Crown gets a revamp. Gary's system of ranking their locals with different categories is a great tool for real-life pub crawls after moving somewhere new. Try it!
With this in mind, we pondered which pubs from TV history would rank well using a system similar to Gary's? We've chosen just a handful of famous watering holes in order to find the best one. The only rule is that they need to serve alcoholic drinks, so Central Perk doesn't count.

Unfortunately for music fans, The Postal Service was just a shortlived group formed by Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and musical artist Dntel or Jimmy Tamborello. with vocal help from Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley. But at the very least, they delivered the spectacular album Give Up which never seems to get old. Well, 11 years after that album was released, the trio decided to get the band back together, but only for a 2013 tour. Thankfully, if you weren't able to attend, director Justin Mitchell has captured the tour in a documentary called Everything Will Change and a trailer for the film has arrived. Watch it! Here's the first trailer for Justin Mitchell's documentary Everything Will Change (via The Playlist): The documentary will only be screening in theaters for one night only at select AMC Theatres locations in just 10 cities. Here's the complete list of theaters showing...

It was just over eleven years ago when a little side project from Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and Dntel knob twiddler Jimmy Tamborello blew up, but in a way many didn't expect. Known as The Postal Service, the carefully crafted blend of melodic electronic music and indie rock on Give Up grew by word of month. Sales of the album were a steady, slow burn, but within four years or so, it went platinum. While fans clamored for another record, it wasn't to be, but the band did reunite in 2013 for a string of live dates, and now a documentary is here chronicling what went down. Directed by Justin Mitchell, "Everything Will Change" captures that 2013 tour, with Gibbard, Tamborello and Jenny Lewis (who sings backup on six songs and also toured with the band way back in 2003), all participating. It's very much something for fans, new and old,...

As I mentioned in its introduction, my Steely Dan appreciation last week stemmed from an email exchange with several other people. And my article was not the last word by a long shot. One of the participants, Tony Alterman, is responding with his own album-by-album review, and his brother, CultureCatch's own Ian Alterman, is pitching in with his own observations. Here, with punctuation corrected and tangents omitted, is the origin of the debate and its continuation.
Tony Alterman:
Katy Lied -- Probably [Steely Dan's] fourth-best album, after Aja, Can't Buy a Thrill, and Royal Scam, in that order. Of course, fourth-best for Steely Dan is a bit like Beethoven's fourth-best symphony -- shades of difference here.
Ian:
Re: Steely Dan, it might be heresy, but I think Royal Scam is better than Aja. So my order would be Royal Scam, Aja, Can't Buy a Thrill, and then...well...it wouldn’t be Katy Lied.

Seth Cohen's character in The O.C. was much more than just a nerd punch-line, Wil argues, he paved the way for comic-book movie success...
We all have touchstones in adolescent life that end up shaping who we become. I’m sure we all share a few of them. Maybe it’s Holden Caulfield. Maybe it’s Kurt Cobain. Maybe it’s The Smiths or Fight Club or Ghost World. All of those had an effect on me, but I’m not ashamed to say that the one who had the biggest effect was Seth Cohen, a character in the early 2000s Fox teen soap opera The O.C.
Seth Cohen was awesome. He was awkward and read Chuck Klosterman and drew superheroes and wore the coolest t-shirts. He brought comic books, twee indie rock and snarky internet knowingness to a show few would associate with geekiness, and blasted all those things into the mainstream.

It's the end of an era for Death Cab for Cutie. Founding guitarist Chris Walla announced on Wednesday that he'll be leaving the alternative rock band after 17 years, in a statement released to Seattle-based music blog Slog. His last concert with the group will take place at Victoria, BC's Rifflandia Festival on September 13. You can find the full text of Walla's statement below, and further down a response from his Death Cab bandmates Ben Gibbard, Nick Harmer and Jason McGerr: "Short version: I’m leaving Death Cab for Cutie. My last show with the band will be September 13, 2014, at the Rifflandia Festival in Victoria, BC. I hope you guys can make it. Longer version: I think I long for the unknown. It might be that simple. I will miss being a quarter of this band, and will support whatever course Death Cab for Cutie chooses from here. I am profoundly grateful to Ben,...

Could Australian audiences who seem to be tiring of dark, home-grown dramas and thrillers spark to a musical comedy/romance about an Emo teenager who falls in love with a Christian girl?
Writer-director Neil Triffett and producer Lee Matthews reckon so, and are confident they can turn their 15-minute short Emo: The Musical into a full-length feature.
It will be the feature debut for both. Matthews has produced 14 shorts and Triffett has directed numerous shorts and documentaries.
The Emo short has an impressive pedigree, having been nominated for best short at the Generation14 Plus section of this year.s Berlin Film Festival, where it got a special mention, and screened at more than 20 international festivals.
Screen Australia gave the producers a grant to finish the short and is now funding the development of the feature, which Triffett will write and direct as well as composing the songs.

Rutina Wesley: I found out over the hiatus about the end of my journey on the show. [Laughs]
What was your reaction?

Singer/songwriter Ingrid Michaelson first came to prominence seven years ago after “Grey’s Anatomy” used her song “Keep Breathing,” followed by Old Navy appropriating “The Way I Am” to sell sweaters during 2007’s holiday season. But fans of those songs who delved deeper found that Michaelson had much more to offer than songs that licensed for TV placements. Her confessional, vulnerable lyrics, delivered by her crystalline vocals quickly caught on with followers of such artists as Sara Bareilles, Tori Amos, Regina Spektor, and Rachael Yamagata. Next Tuesday (April 15), Michaelson will release “Lights Out,” led by the soaring, fun first single, “Girls Chase Boys.” The song caught fire not only for its catchiness, but also for its gender-bending video, which pays homage to Robert Palmer’s “Simply Irresistible” iconic clip. Her last album, 2012's "Human Again," debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200. Michaelson appeared at the Grammy Museum earlier this...

Los Angeles - Jim Carrey's status report on "Dumber and Dumber To": "We just finished up." Speaking to a small group of reporters on the red carpet at a David Lynch Foundation event in the Beverly Wilshire, the actor and comedian had nothing but kind words to say about the "Dumb and Dumber" sequel, set for a November 14 release this year. "It's just really fantastic getting together with the old group again," Carrey said, referring to "Dumb and Dumber" writers/directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly and co-lead Jeff Daniels. "I just saw an assemblage of the new movie… it's just so fun, it's almost a dissociative experience now. Harry and Lloyd are kind of their own people, like they actually exist. And they're not me, that's for sure." He said climbing back into his character Lloyd Christmas' shoes was no sweat across from Daniels' Harry Dunne, like "no time had passed at all.

I don’t know who compared Lakefield to Death Cab For Cutie, but they’re a bunch of silly gooses. When you hear the beautiful vocals of Kate Rossiter, you can’t really think of anything, you’re just too busy swooning.
“Good Guy” is a song that I think was made to be in a Ryan Reynolds romantic comedy. It has that vibe. It’s a beautiful and sweet track, loaded with heartache and hurt and dripping with sweetness (mostly due to Rossiter’s vocals). It reminded me of “Merry Happy” by Kate Nash, if that works. It’s a harder, more aggressive song at points, but the vocals have that same dreamy quality that Nash’s tracks often have. This isn’t a bad thing, in fact, it’s quite refreshing.

The remarkable thing about The O.C. is just how much better it is than it deserves to be. It’s a teen soap. Teen soaps aren’t supposed to be good. They’re supposed to be guilty-pleasure, why-can-i-name-all-the-characters-on-this-show-but-not-all-the-Supreme-Court-justices shame beacons, pop culture blips that are simultaneously enjoyed and ridiculed for three-quarters of a season and then instantly forgotten. The fact that now, nearly seven years after it ended, I’m still eager to spend a whole post breaking down The O.C. is a testament to how much the show surpasses the insubstantial nature of its genre. Long after the cultural moment passed, the show is still great and still stands up to re-watching.
The O.C. manages to take everything that makes this kind of show compulsive fun, the love triangles, the drug overdoses, the long-lost daughters, and combine that with wit, quick-fire dialogue, sarcasm, and self-aware charm. Its signature moments are not soapy,...

It's news that's set TV fans of a certain generation all atwitter: "Gossip Girl" alum Leighton Meester and former "O.C." star Adam Brody are engaged to be wed.
On Tuesday (Nov. 19), Star was first to report that Brody popped the question after 10 months of dating and, while, as of press time, the couple hasn't released a statement regarding the surprising news, several other news outlets have received anonymous confirmation.
The engagement is exciting not only because the couple do seem rather adorable together in pictures, but also because who doesn't want to imagine a wedding between their alter egos, Upper East Side ice queen Blair Waldorf and adorable Newport nerd Seth Cohen? (Set aside the fact that both characters wound up married at the end of their respective series. This is pretend, after all.)

Director Gabriel Sunday is promising psychedelic good times with his latest short film about troubled indie-music icon Daniel Johnston. The work plays like a documentary, but things transform when Johnston’s art, music and other quirks are used to create his internal world — and if you’ve listened to his music, then you know that’s an emotionally complex experience. The footage was captured during the Open Borders Festival in California, inside an abandoned bookstore, shot in just a few days. The soundtrack boasts songs from Tom Waits, Beck, Bright Eyes, Wilco, Death Cab for Cutie, Johnny Depp and Gibby Haynes, Pearl Jam, the Flaming Lips and more. The filmmakers are currently campaigning on Kickstarter to gather funds for the postproduction...
