Canada is the nation that brought Schitt’s Creek, Run the Burbs and Letterkenny into the world, but it has been a rough period for a country that peered over the border last year and watched the worst U.S. strike action for a generation.
Talks between the Canadian Media Producers Association (Cmpa) and the Writers Guild of Canada (Wgc) over a new Independent Production Agreement (Ipa) have resumed, amid tensions around falling fees, mini-rooms and AI, and we have spoken to multiple connected sources to assess the state of play.
Negotiations restarted this morning, we hear, after a first round of bargaining between the two sides ended without a deal on November 23.
The Cmpa and Wgc have been looking to strike a new three-year Ipa since October, and, whisper it, fears about a strike have lingered in the background.

This year is shaping up to be yet another frenetic one in the international media landscape, with change incoming on numerous fronts. Here, our overseas team breaks down some of the issues we think will define the entertainment and news terrain in 2024.
How Low Can The Market Go? ‘The White Lotus’
After a year of industrial strife, many will be looking forward to seeing the back of 2023, but the question of where things head in 2024 has dominated chatter since the dual U.S. labor strikes came to their eventual conclusion. One two-word phrase has summed up predictions above all else: “market contraction.” TV execs from all walks of life forecast that 2024 will be a year of correction, with global levels of production slipping as the streamers desperately seek to turn profits while retaining subscribers, and traditional players continue to grapple with challenges ranging from ad contraction to streamer fever.

Programs from Elliot Page’s production company and the team behind comedy Letterkenny are among Paramount+’s latest Canadian slate.
The streamer’s strategy in Canada was unveiled today at the Banff World Media Festival, with a line-up of four projects in development and an original documentary from documentary filmmaker Dianne Whelan.
Actor and producer Page’s Page Boy Productions and Canadian producer heavyweight Muse Entertainment are working up Len & Cub, a limited six-part series dramatizing the secret relationship of two young men in rural 20th-century New Brunswick whose story came to light when a box of photos was recently discovered in an estate sale. Lynne Kamm is writing.
Hate the Player: The Ben Johnson Story is a scripted comedy from New Metric Media, the company behind Letterkenny, about the scandal of the titular Johnson, the former Canadian sprinter who went from “hero to zero in 9.79 seconds.

Location scouting and filming on service productions were already cooling down in Canada over the past few weeks in anticipation of the WGA strike on May 1. And while those projects with completed scripts are trudging forward, one “substantial” unnamed series being shot in Toronto has already shut down, according to the city.
It’s just the start of what could be a big financial loss for the Ontario industry, where Ontario Creates reveals 419 productions in 2022 — including TV series like “The Boys” and films like “Women Talking” — contributed a record-breaking $3.15 billion to the economy.
In B.C., where many service productions have wrapped for the season and writers’ rooms would typically begin assembling over the next few weeks, people are preparing for unforeseen delays. A prolonged strike will inevitably not only affect those who have been steadily employed for years, but also the provincial economy, which drew $3.6 billion from the film industry last year,...

If you’re an aspiring TV writer in Canada, it’s quite possible your script is in Anthony Q. Farrell’s slush pile. The Canadian showrunner is always reading projects and helping new writers get their start, and now that he’s got a few weeks of downtime before his summer projects fire up, he’s finally sitting down to read them.
“I feel like I’m in a Zen place right now,” he tells Variety. “But I think the summer’s going to be bananas.”
Farrell, who got his start writing for Greg Daniels on “The Office,” has helmed shows like “The Parker Andersons/Amelia Parker” and “Overlord and the Underwoods.” Slowly but surely, he has become one of Canada’s most prominent showrunners and an industry leader in telling authentic and diverse stories on screen. To do that, he’s spent countless hours fostering Bipoc talent behind the...

Exclusive: Anthony Q. Farrell, who was among the writers of NBC sitcom The Office, has been tapped as showrunner for season two of CBC comedy Run the Burbs.
Farrell, who was recently handed the 2022 Showrunner Award by the Writers Guild of Canada, will replace season one showrunner Shebli Zarghami on the show, which was officially renewed earlier this month as part of CBC’s 2022/23 slate.
Co-created by star Andrew Phung (Kim’s Convenience) and Scott Townend (The Secret Marathon), the Pier 21 Films-produced Run the Burbs follows the Phams, a young Vietnamese-South Asian-Canadian family who upend ideas about contemporary family values and life in the suburbs.
“I’m really looking forward to delving into the world that Andrew and Scott have created. The potential for cultural representation on Run the Burbs is incredible,” said Farrell. “They did a beautiful job setting up the Phams and their neighbors in season one,...

The Office writer Anthony Q. Farrell has a big job on his hands, convincing fellow Canadian TV scribes to step up and take the lead in local series writer rooms.
“I’m getting messages from young writers that are in rooms with showrunners who don’t have any experience showrunning, and it’s difficult because they want to be supportive but that person doesn’t have training and they don’t know how to do that job,” Farrell told The Hollywood Reporter.

Metacafe and Strike.TV announced that original web series Dwelling was voted the winner of its recent MetaVote contest. Dwelling garnered 34 percent of audience votes, beating out 6 other original web series which all together generated over six million views over the course of a month. The series, created, written, and directed, by Anthony Q. Farrell, a writer for NBC's The Office and a three-time Writers Guild Award nominee, centers around three people who "willingly share a house, but unwillingly share their lives." The MetaVote contest sourced the shows from Strike.TV, which launched out of the Writers Guild strike of 2008 and has focused on professional writers in the entertainment industry as its creative base—the other series in the contest, Unknown Sender, Coma, Period., Let's Get Laid, Daryl from OnCar, Hildy Hildy, and B-Rock, featured writers from Die Hard, The Simpsons, Knight Rider, and Malcolm in the Middle, in addition to The Office.

As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, someone (or someones) actually sits down and writes a movie or TV show before you end up seeing it at your local multiplex or on your favorite TV network. The people who do the sitting and the writing are, surprisingly, called writers and, like the Directors, the Golden Globes and the Oscars, they have their own awards show.
This week, the Writers Guild of America, which is the trade group and advocate for writers, announced its nominations for outstanding achievement in feature film and television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.
We realize that these nominations may not be as glamorous as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but we kinda like writers around here and think they do a pretty important job.

Awards heavyweights "Mad Men," "30 Rock" and "The Office" and buzzed-about newcomer "Modern Family" led the TV field for the 2010 Writers Guild Awards with three nominations each.
AMC's "Mad Men" and NBC's "30 Rock" and "The Office" are in the running for best drama/comedy series, and each received two nominations for episodic writing. "Family" made the cut for best comedy series, best new series and best episodic writing for a comedy series.
ABC's "Family" was one of two new shows to break into the best series categories along with Fox's quirky high-school dramedy "Glee," which faces "Family" in the best comedy series and best new series fields.
While the WGA Awards are still in its nomination phase, Fox's "The Simpsons" can already uncork the champagne. The veteran series is assured to win the animation category after landing all five nomination slots.
