If you want to dodge in "God of War: Ascension," you'll have to flick the right analog stick as in previous entries in the series. I'm not sure why I thought that would change with the latest--although chronologically first--in Kratos' saga of revenge and making a graveyard of Olympus. "God of War" and its sequels have been so influential and vital to the character action game, it's hard to imagine the way the series handles making any kind of leaps and bounds in a new direction.
And yet, here we are, three years after "God of War III," and Kratos still has that ungainly, rolling dodge (even as Sony Santa Monica promises that they've worked in new animations to reflect a younger, more limber version of the character). My hands-on time with "God of War: Ascension" was disappointing because it felt like I was playing a bad game, it just...

In this trailer, titled "From the Ashes," is one of the rare times we get to see the Spartan murder machine's vulnerability. During a preview event last night (look for my post on that later today), "God of War: Ascension" Game Director Todd Papy talked about using the prequel to get at some of the emotional/softer elements of the character, something the last act of "God of War 3" attempted, albeit clumsily with a stand-in for Kratos' dead daughter.
Normally, I'd pick this spot to complain about the trend in game trailers to attempt to evoke emotion by slowing the music and action down, maybe with actual "slow-mo" thrown in for added effect. But this works--i'm still trying to parse through precisely why this particular piece works so well (I guess maybe because it's so informed by the personality and aesthetic of the character, maybe?). Anyway, it's a good look,...

PlayStation Plus members will be among the first to check out God of War: Ascension‘s new multiplayer aspect, with a beta service being released for the game shortly.
Game director Todd Papy took to the PlayStation Blog for the announcement, also hinting that there may be a “few other secret inroads” to accessing the beta for non-ps Plus members.
The upcoming hack-n’-slash-fest, which sits before the previous games in the series’ timeline, will place a heavier focus on multiplayer gaming, while still featuring a single player story. The beta will be multiplayer-only, but fans of the series will have enough experience of the single player mode by now.
The combat is 4v4, and involves the usual Xp-gaining, levelling-up strategy seen in most online games nowadays. Ascension will also incorporate a form of class system, as players choose from four familiar Gods – Hades, Zeus, Poseidon and Ares – to pledge allegiance to,...

God of War: Ascension, the fourth main game in the award-winning action adventure franchise is coming soon and it’s no secret that it will include multiplayer for the first time. Izzy, the Lead Character Concept Artist on the game has been giving details on the first Titan boss you can expect to take down with your friends.
Polyphemus, the one-eyed son of Poseidon, appears on the desert multiplayer map and he is extremely angry. Not only is he a giant, he also has horns, broken tusks and huge chains going through his neck and arms. Izzy explains that his anger issues may have something to do with the painful piercings keeping him chained down;
”If you pay attention to the piercings on our big dour friend, you’ll notice that he’s got three gigantic piercings holding him in place. Two are impaling his arms. They separate his biceps...

The release of BioShock Infinite, one of the most anticipated games of 2012, has been pushed back from Oct. 16, 2012, to Feb. 26, 2013, according to a message posted on developer Irrational Games’ website. “We’ve come to realize that some specific tweaks and improvements will make Infinite into something even more extraordinary,” wrote game director Ken Levine. “I won’t kid you: BioShock Infinite is a very big game, and we’re doing things that no one has ever done in a first-person shooter.”
Sadly, that means we’ll have to wait four extra months before being able to visit Columbia, the game...

Sony have released some juicy new details on their upcoming God of War: Ascension, the fourth chapter in their epic Greek mythology action franchise. The game will showcase an updated combat system (although details are sketchy at best as to exactly what that entails), and will also be the first entry in the franchise’s history to have been kitted out with multiplayer.
As you’d expect, multiplayers will be able to compete against each other either on or offline, in battles that Todd Papy, Game Director at Santa Monica Studios, describes as “fierce combat [on the] scale of the franchise with a unique gameplay experience”. It looks like the dreaded game-churn may soon meet a brand new vanquisher.
Built to retain the scale and tone of the single player campaign, this new mode apparently gives eight players a slew of different match options, along with customisable avatar warriors, armour and weapons.

Kratos has never been one to play nice with others, so maybe it’s no surprise that the God of War series has so far avoided multiplayer. But that all changes with God of War: Ascension, the PlayStation 3 prequel that was first announced earlier this month. Sony revealed Monday that Ascension will contain multiplayer modes in addition to a single-player campaign. EW got to see some of the ancient Greek gameplay in action and talked to director Todd Papy about how multiplayer will work in the God of War universe. Here’s what we learned:
– Kratos will not be playable in multiplayer.

The live stream of God of War: Ascension’s multiplayer has come and gone. For those of you who joined me for my live blogging many thanks, but for those of you who missed it here is a recap of today’s happenings.
Today the Playstation Blog’s Jeff Rubenstein interviewed God of War: Ascension’s Game Director Todd Papy delving into what was a surprise to most of us, God of War multiplayer. The live stream had many side bits including but not limited to the videos I posted in this article, but the main course was the multiplayer material. Things moved quickly when it came to the two’s discussion of multiplayer, this is what I gathered from it.

A Q&A featuring the game's director Todd Papy gets into some of the what and why of the God of War prequel. Also: multiplayer!
The biggest piece of news from this morning's Q&A about God of War: Ascension: Kratos will no longer be struggling to open chests with frantic button presses. "The Ghost of Sparta" will straight up be smashing them open.
Chest-smashing aside, longtime God of War Game Director Todd Papy discussed some of the motivations and goals about Ascension's multiplayer, along with a shot-by-shot breakdown of the new footage they released recently. First and foremost, Papy wants to assure fans of the series that the new multiplayer mode will not come at the expense of the single-player. At the same time, one of their goals was to get the brutal violence of the single player into to team multi modes. Offering eight-player multiplayer (with teams from...

"God of War 3" is finished. Done. Gone gold, as they in say in the common parlance of our industry. Sony invited the press to come and try out the introductory level of Kratos' grand finale last week, letting folks play through the game's opening credits and through its first confrontation with a screen-filling enemy.
As is customary for "God of War" games, this sequel opens in grand form. If there was ever any doubt that Stig Asmussen's "God of War" would lack the grandeur and shocking scale of David Jaffe or Cory Barlog's, you can lay them to rest now. "God of War 3" has spectacle to spare.
