Exclusive: Prince William and the recovering Kate Middleton will not be in attendance at this Sunday’s BAFTA TV Awards.
Deadline has learned that the Duke of Cambridge, who has been the film and TV org’s president since 2010, will instead record a video message that will be played during the ceremony, for which nominees include four actors from The Crown.
William attended the BAFTA Film Awards in February alone as his wife was recovering from illness, and we are told it is not unusual for the pair to only attend one of the two major BAFTA awards ceremonies in a calendar year.
William has been attending some engagements recently but Middleton is currently recovering from cancer and undergoing chemotherapy. She revealed the news around six weeks ago via a video message, stating that doctors had found the cancer during tests after an operation. There had been speculation about the...

Paramount Names Australia/New Zealand Chief
Paramount Global has named Beverley McGarvey President of Network 10, Head of Streaming and Regional Lead for Australia and New Zealand, effective immediately. This comes after the exit of the UK-based Maria Kyriacou, Paramount’s former President of Broadcast and Studios, who counted Australia among her responsibilities. It also follows a local restructure that saw the departure of Executive VP, Chief Operating and Commercial Officer and Regional Lead Jarrod Villani. McGarvey, previously EVP, Chief Content Officer and Head of Paramount+ Anz, will now report to Pam Kaufman, President & CEO of International Markets, Global Consumer Products and Experiences. Kaufman said Australia was one of Paramount’s “most important, priority markets,” with McGarvey’s promotion reflecting that fact. McGarvey will have commercial and creative leadership of Paramount’s business in Australia, with oversight of Network 10 and its portfolio of brands, including streamer 10 Play. In the peaceful Greek city of Yolcos, Pattie (Sonja Ball) is a mouse who dreams of becoming a hero like Jason (of And The Argonauts fame). Her opportunity comes when a statue is unveiled of Zeus (Josh Widdicombe), leaving Poseidon (Rob Beckett) in a jealous rage. He gives the citizens of Yolcos seven days to build a statue in his honour that is as beautiful as Zeus’ statue, or their home will be destroyed.
While she is inspired by the fantastical tales she read, Pattie is disheartened at how nobody believes in her dreams of heroism. The winners of Taskmaster series 11-15 are currently doing sit-ups, drinking pints of raw egg, and running up and down the steps outside Chiswick Library. They’re in training for Taskmaster’s third Champion of Champions contest.

Champion of Champions 3 Line-Up Sarah Kendall

She’s technically the dunce of this operation going in with a whole-series points score of just 158, but a dynamite chick like her isn’t about to let that get in the way. Imagine being someone who’s never seen Taskmaster. A virgin to joy. Someone whose eyes have never before drunk in the sight of a banana-Noel Fielding hiding in a fruit bowl, of Joe Wilkinson presenting the mayor of Chesham with 42 Calippo ice lollies, or of Charlotte Ritchie stumbling around a golf course blindfolded like an adorable Minion. What promise awaits! The prize tasks, the flashes of creative genius, the glorious failures… Alex Horne’s challenge-based comedy panel show is one of the most reliably entertaining TV programmes ever made.

Derry Girls‘ concluding season has won Best Scripted Comedy at the BAFTA TV Awards.
The Channel 4 comedy won in a tricky category that included BBC double Am I Being Unreasonable? and Ghosts and Channel 4’s Big Boys.
Last year’s winner was the BBC’s Motherland.
“In the specific there is the universal,” said Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee, who thanked Channel 4 as she accepted the award. “And if you always look in the dark there will be light.”
Derry Girls is from Hat Trick Productions and followed a group of teenagers at a fictional Catholic secondary school in Derry in the mid-1990s, as Northern Ireland engaged in the peace process and tried to leave The Troubles behind. It was Channel 4’s biggest rating scripted comedy since Father Ted back in the 1990s, and its final scene, in which the various characters vote for peace, was up for Memorable Moment today.

Ben Whishaw has won the coveted Leading Actor gong at the BAFTA TV Awards.
Whishaw beat off competition from Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy, Slow Horses’ Gary Oldman, The Responder’s Martin Freeman and Chaske Spencer, who led BBC/Amazon Prime Video’s The English.
Whishaw played Adam in This is Going to Hurt, Adam Kay’s British medical comedy-drama television miniseries for the BBC. The show focused on the lives of a group of junior doctors working in the NHS, exploring the emotional effects of working in a stressful work environment.
Last year’s winner was Sean Bean for his role in Jimmy McGovern’s BBC prison drama Time.
Whishaw thanked co-star Ambika Mod and said, “You’re my best actor” to the newcomer, who played Shruti in the show. Mod was controversially snubbed from the Best Actress list and the comment appeared to be a barbed reference to this.

Netflix’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story has won Best International show at the BAFTA TV Awards.

BBC smash The Traitors has won the BAFTA TV Award for Reality & Constructed Factual.
The Claudia Winkleman-hosted breakout series won in an all-bbc category against Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK and We Are Black and British. Presenter Winkleman is also up for Best Entertainment Performance for the show.
The Traitors made a huge splash when it premiered late last year in the UK. Versions of the Dutch original have sold around the world, with some sources saying it has helmed something of a global formats revival. The 2023 BAFTA TV Awards are here with the red carpet just kicking off in London where the British version of the Emmys will be hosted by comedians Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett. Usually, this event is paired with a classically grey and gloomy British sky despite being held annually in May. Today, however, the red carpet is shining brightly in the Spring sun as those of us here in the media center at the Royal Festival Hall, where this year’s TV BAFTAs are held, swelter at our laptops.
Down on the red carpet, Michelle Visage and Clara Amfo welcome viewers and guests alike as the first stars of this year’s awards begin to trickle in here in Waterloo, just beside the London Eye. There is a real mix of stars in attendance today. There are British TV presenters including “Strictly Come Dancing” judge Motsi Mabuse as well as...

The British version of the Emmys is set for Sunday, May 14 with the main ceremony of the BAFTAs taking place in London. While these awards aren’t exactly a, uh, crystal clear crystal ball for the Emmys, they can give some insight into which British shows may make the successful trip across the Atlantic. At the same time, it also gives an insight into which American shows are proving to be the Brits’ particular, uh, cup of tea.
This year’s BAFTA ceremony will take at the Royal Festival Hall and will be hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan. Two shows lead the way in nominations this year, with Ben Whishaw‘s “This is Going to Hurt” and Martin Freeman‘s “The Responder” each receiving six nominations.
Like the Emmys, the BAFTAs split their TV awards into two parts — the main ceremony and an earlier celebration devoted to celebrating the creative arts.

It’s a sad day for Radio 2 listeners. Today, Ken Bruce is leaving the mid-morning slot he’s occupied for three decades. Never a showy broadcaster – like Terry Wogan before him, he identifies as a shy man – the 72-year-old Scot was an avuncular anchor in the day. To hear that he had decided to leave came as a shock. The mood curdled when it transpired Radio 2 bosses had refused to let him work out his contract, insisting he get his slippers out from under the desk by lunchtime today.
“It’s entirely within the BBC’s right to ask me to step away a little early,” he told Radio 4’s Today programme. “But for the sake of 17 days, which was all that was remaining [on my contract], it seems a shame.” He pointed out that he’d stuck to an old-school work ethic that meant that “over the last 46 years, I haven...

Paul O’Grady has expressed his “disappointment” with BBC Radio 2, saying “it’s not what it was”.
The broadcaster’s comments come after the news that veteran DJ Ken Bruce was leaving the station after 45 years to go to Greatest Hits Radio.
InJanuary, when Bruce announced his departure, former Radio 2 DJ Vanessa feltz accused the BBC of “ageism”.
Now, O’Grady, who left Radio 2 in 2021 after being asked to share his slot with comedian Rob Beckett, has explained the motivation behind his decision.
“I was disappointed, because I’m a great believer in continuity,” he told Metro.co.uk, adding: “If you go off for 13 weeks and somebody else comes on, the listeners don’t know when you’re back on.”
He continued: “Radio 2 has changed; it’s not what it was. They’re trying to aim for a much younger audience, which doesn’t make sense because you’ve got Radio 1.

Claire Foy has said she was “very upset” when she discovered she had earned less than Matt Smith on The Crown.
In the first two seasons of the hit Netflix royal drama, Foy starred as the series lead, Queen Elizabeth II, and featured in almost every scene.
Smith’s role, as Prince Philip, was signifcantly smaller. However, in 2018 it emerged that the former Doctor Who star had been paid more for his work on the series than Foy.
Speaking to The Guardian, Foy described her reaction at the time, revealing that the news reports were “the first I’d heard about it”.
“I wasn’t shocked. I was very upset. Not like, boohoo, crying upset. I was very upset,” she said. “I don’t think I allowed myself to [express anger].”
“I really love my industry, and I think it is made up of lots of honourable, incredibly talented, brilliant, imaginative, amazing people,...

Sarah Michelle Gellar has suggested that audiences still have a “backwards” view on female-led superhero films.
In the Nineties, Gellar carved out new ground on TV as the lead in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in which she played a powerful high-school student fighting against vampires and demons.
However, in a new interview, the 45-year-old claimed that audiences were unwilling to accept women leading in action-packed Marvel films.
“Genre is where women can really succeed and hold an audience,” she told The Guardian.
“Every time a Marvel movie tries to do a female cast, it just gets torn apart… Unfortunately, audiences weren’t as accepting. There’s still this mentality of ‘the male superhero’, this very backwards way of thinking.”
In 2019, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel was hit by a sexist smear campaign, in which trolls posted fake negative reviews on the superhero film’s Rotten Tomatoes page, causing its score to plummet.

A new Channel 5 documentary, Jeremy Clarkson: King of Controversy, has told the story of how Clarkson ended up punching Piers Morgan at an awards show in 2004.
The programme, which aired on Sunday night (29 January), was released in the wake of Clarkson’s scathing column about Meghan Markle, which led to widespread condemnation and the formerTop Gear presenter apologising.
The column quickly became the most complained-about article in history at Ipso (Independent Press Standards Organisation).
Channel 5’s documentary demonstrates how the TV personality, 62, has often made headlines for all the wrong reasons.
It delves into the story of how Clarkson physically attacked Morgan at the 2004 British Press Awards in London.
In the programme, Ken Gibson, former motoring editor at The Sun, recalled being at the awards ceremony with Clarkson, which Morgan was attending as the then editor of The Mirror.

BBC Breakfast viewers have accused the show of “scaremongering against” forthcoming teacher strikes.
Teachers in England and Wales are staging walkouts next month after union members voted in favour of striking over pay.
Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt welcomed Gráinne Hallahan, a senior analyst for Times Education Supplement, onto the series to discuss the subject.
However, viewers expressed disapproval of the angle of the segment and certain phrases used by the hosts, one of which saw Stayt describe the action as teachers “not turning up” for work.
“Not sure I like the phrase teachers not turning up from Charlie Stayt, which makes it sound casual rather than a difficult decision to go on strike,” @Stillteachers wrote.
Others questioned Munchetty’s comments, which saw her refer to the “massive disruption” striking may cause parents and children.
“The issue is it is massive disruption for parents and for children, obviously – their education being disrupted,...
