Niall Horan’s officially a model!
After One Direction disbanded over a year ago, the 24-year-old singer took a step in a different direction. Sure, Horan’s still releasing music and but he’s also setting his sites from the stage to the runway with a new modeling career.

Last year marked the 15th anniversary of Donnie Darko, and Arrow Films is making sure that the film celebrates in style. They've teamed up with director Richard Kelly for a 4K restoration of the beloved cult movie, and following its UK theatrical release that began late last year, the 4K presentation is now coming to big screens in the Us (and on a new Blu-ray release this April). Recently, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Kelly to reflect on the making of Donnie Darko, restoring it in 4K, potentially returning to the world of Southland Tales, and the intriguing multiverse connection between his movies.
Thanks for taking the time to talk with me today, Richard. How did the restoration and the theatrical re-release of Donnie Darko come about? Did Arrow Films approach you, and was this something that you had been wanting to do anyway?
Richard Kelly: Yes,...

Jia Zhangke has long been revered as a leading figure of mainland China’s sixth generation of filmmakers, with films like “The World” and “Still Life” premiering — and, in the case of the latter, winning the top prize — at major international film festivals. Jia now has a new feather in his cap, and it’s one few (if any) other filmmakers can lay claim to: a noodle shop in his hometown of Fenyang.

Named for “Mountains May Depart” (“Shan He Gu Ren”), which premiered at Cannes last year, the restaurant features posters for the film as well as some of the honors it received on the festival circuit. The menu is apparently less expansive: Dao Bo Mian, a kind of sliced noodle, is the primary dish served. It comes with dumplings and will set customers back $8.60, according to New China.

With just over thirty years worth of screen time, there are plenty of memorable moments in Grange Hill. From its inception in February 1978 the programme proved both entertaining and controversial. It tackled many difficult subjects head-on: bullying, vandalism, racism, censorship, shop-lifting, school uniform protest, teenage pregnancy and - most famously of all - drugs. However, every now and again it would attempt to give viewers a break from the everyday and head off on a day trip or weekend excursion.

Glenn here. Each Tuesday we bring you reviews and features on documentaries from theatres, festivals, and on demand. This week we’re looking at Walter Salles' doc about Chinese film giant Jia Zhangke.
In the opening scene of Jia Zhangke’s sublime Mountains May Depart, characters dance to the Pet Shop Boys’ euphoric rendition of “Go West”. The song may have been a demand for a gay utopia, but it is also an apt choice for a movie in which characters slowly shift from rural China to the blue skies and bright lights of Australia. Zhangke’s characters are often caught between two worlds, travelling down a road (literal of metaphorical) to an unknown future and it is these pervading themes that have made him the unofficial cinematic chronicler of modern day China. They are also what makes Jia Zhangke: A Guy from Fenyang such a fitting tribute to the man.

Making its World Premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last spring, winning an Audience Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival, and picking up an Original Screenplay prize at the Gold Horse Awards, Jia Zhangke's latest film "Mountains May Depart" enjoyed a terrific festival run in 2015. Depending on your age, you may be interested to know that Feb. 6 marks the 50th birthday of either pop singer Rick Astley - or as you may better know him - the British guy from that video prank meme. The two are one in the same, of course, but as a result of a strange (and apparently deathless) Internet joke, Astley boasts two very different fan bases: The people who bought his records starting in the late '80s and the people who encountered him after being tricked into clicking on the video for his 1987 hit, "Never Gonna Give You Up.

Here are the songs that were considered forJames Bond themes but ultimately rejected. Some of them aren't half-bad, too...
Bond title songs are an intrinsic part of the series. But did you know that there were often unused tracks that were considered but rejected? Some of them are damn good too. This is bound to lead to comparisons and what if… discussions, and that's what we are here to encourage today.
As soon as we try to define what makes a great Bond song, we run into the problem that dogs any criticism of the series – every aspect of it is extremely divisive. Whatever element you nominate as a high point, best actor, score or film, for example, is someone else's least favourite and vice versa. The same goes for the Bond theme songs: some people like a bouncy pop song with a nice brass arrangement. For others,...

Admitting this is the first film by Jia Zhangke that I’ve seen may lose me some street cred, but I was pleased to finally discover the filmmaker via his latest exploration of modern China, Mountains May Depart. A universal story of the irresistible draw of the present meeting the inexorable march of the future, the film stands as a bold, compassionate statement for the power of gestures and the ripples they cause through time.
And it opens with a dance sequence set to the Pet Shop Boys’ “Go West”, which is about as ambitious an opening as you could hope for.
Taking place in three different periods – 1999, 2014 and 2025, with changing aspect ratios to match – in China and later Australia, the film charts the ups and downs in lives of three friends:...

The first trailer for Mountains May Depart was released last week and the Cannes nominee looks to be one of the more interesting films of the year. It is directed by Jia Zhang-ke.
The official synopsis is as follows:
At once an intimate drama and a decades-spanning epic that leaps from the recent past to the present to the speculative near-future, Jia’s new film is an intensely moving study of how China’s economic boom – and the culture of materialism it has spawned – has affected the bonds of family, tradition, and love. Mountains May Depart opens in 1999 to the strains of the Pet Shop Boys’ “Go West,” a song whose promise of blue skies captures the dreams of affluence that seized so many Chinese youth at the turn of the century. In Fenyang, childhood friends Liangzi, a coal miner, and Zhang, the owner of a gas station, are...

“I think in order for a movie to be appreciated, it ultimately needs to be an aesthetic creation,” director Jia Zhang-ke told us at Cannes this year. “Who would care for a film depicting a lot of social realities but devoid of a sense of aesthetics? If my movies have appealed to an international audience, I hope it’s because on a substantial level, they bring the contemporary Chinese experience to the big screen, and that at the same time, they have an artistic quality to them.”
There’s certainly an appeal over here for his latest, Mountains May Depart, which is a three-part, decades-panning drama that stops by New York Film Festival this week following Cannes, Tiff, and more. Ahead of a release in the first half of next year by Kino Lorber, the first (unsubtitled) international trailer has landed, along with a set of evocative posters.

Sold-out screenings for Amy Winehouse documentary and Cobain: Montage of Heck.
Sweden’s Way Out West music festival ran its film programme for the fifth year, and selections included a strong mix of music-related docs (Amy, Cobain: Montage of Heck, The Damned: Don’t You Wish That We Were Dead), Heaven Adores You and features (Eden, Love & Mercy) as well as indie films (Ex Machina, The Falling, Pervert Park) that might appeal to the trendy crowds attending Way Out West.
Films were screened in two cinemas in Goteborg, as well as in a tent on the larger festival site at Slottsskogen park.
The hundreds of musical acts at the main festival included Florence & The Machine, Fka Twigs, Alt-j, Beck, First Aid Kit, Patti Smith, Lauryn Hill, and the Pet Shop Boys.
The event draws 30,000 visitors per day, mostly for music but increasingly taking a look at the film offerings.

The entwined subjects of time passing and landscapes changing have always been synonymous with the work of Chinese director Jia Zhang-ke; his latest feature, Mountains May Depart, expands these ideas to a point that exists beyond any previously established horizon. The film may well be Jia’s most ambitious to date, in this respect: it spans three decades in all, touching down in 1999, 2014 and 2025, so essentially covering our past, present and future. As with all of Jia’s work, location here plays an integral role – like Platform and Pick Pocket, the narrative revolves around the director’s hometown of Fenyang – with scenes unfolding among local festivities on packed streets, or upon the scorched earth of a local coal mine that recalls similar shots in Barbara Loden’s Wanda. And just as we witnessed the gradual construction of the Yangtze River’s Three Gorges Dam (and inevitable destruction of the...

While he’s certainly been very busy working on his upcoming film “The Neon Demon,” Nicolas Winding Refn still found time in his schedule to attend a special screening of “Bronson” last Wednesday at The Cinefamily in Los Angeles. The occasion? The release of the “Bronson” soundtrack on vinyl via Milan Records. Refn stopped by, signed some LPs, then a Q&A was held after the film was over. The director was typically candid during the Q&A, which brought about many interesting tidbits regarding the making of “Bronson” as well as Refn’s inspirations for the soundtrack. What’s especially interesting about the “Bronson” soundtrack is its eclecticism. The film contains a seemingly disparate mix of both ‘80s electronic pop and classical music. Thankfully, Refn gave us some great insight, revealing that he’d tried to get the Pet Shop Boys to compose original music for “Bronson.” The Q...

Cannes — Even at a more civilized festival such as Cannes, it can be hard to catch every single movie in competition. There are always a few that will slip through the cracks and you can always count on the inevitable life drama moment to rear its ugly head. Unlike other festivals, Cannes has less repeat screenings across the board. That also makes things tough for one person to chronicle it all. With less than 24 hours left in the festival we’re happy to say we've been able to cover 10 Cannes selections in depth. Here are capsule reviews for another six selections you may still be curious about. A certain type of vintage genre score has rightfully earned its place in film music pantheon —think the haunting pulsations of John Carpenter, the woozy dreamscapes of Tangerine Dream, the throbbing disco-synth anxieties of Giorgio Moroder —and that atmospheric spirit as such is currently being channeled by filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn. The director recontextualized the Pet Shop Boys for a new generation with his bruising psycho prison film “Bronson”; he's turned throwback synth artist Johnny Jewel into a kind of modern rock star in the field thanks to his “Drive” score (the film's star Ryan Gosling has turned into a devotee too); and he's also helped transform Steven Soderbergh-collaborator Cliff Martinez (“Only God Forgives,” “Solaris”) into one of the most sought after modern film composers. While Refn is creatively indebted to the mondo-exotica genre films of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s and their soundtracks, the filmmaker has used his recent cache to shine a.

Gregg Araki's unique coming-of-age story "White Bird in a Blizzard" already has his distinctive imprint on it, but the film's dreamlike atmosphere is aided by the music department. A couple of months back, we brought you a preview of Cocteau Twins member Robin Guthrie and avant pianist Harold Budd's score for the film, and today, we're taking a look at the songs that power the official soundtrack. Featuring, of course, Cocteau Twins, along with New Order, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, and Tears For Fears, the song choices mark out the very specific sound Araki uses to tell his tale. The inclusion of The Jesus And Mary Chain gives things a bit of an edge, while selections by Everything But The Girl brings the music toward the '90s, and Ulrich Schnauss pulls the soundtrack into the new millennium. At least if Jemini repeat their Eurovision score on Pointless, this time it will actually be good news.

Playing at the same time as Skrillex, Nas, Pet Shop Boys and the Dismemberment Plan, Muse was the Coachella headliner that had the misfortune of playing against numerous other palatable options on Saturday night (Apr. 12). Those who committed to the main stage were treated to a typically soaring performance from the symphonic rock troupe, who ticked off the hits upon opening with "Stockholm Syndrome" and ending with a rapturous version of "Knights of Cydonia." Story: Coachella Party Guide In between, frontman Matt Bellamy wagged his shagging hair and shrugged off the sandstorm that had plagued Pharrell Williams' voice

Derek Jarman is remembered as an innovative film-maker and artist but his stage work is key to his career – even his own residence was a performance
Derek Jarman wandered into theatre, as he did into much of his creative life. The stage design department at the Slade School of Art in 1963 was casually structured, and, for the era, an uncloseted zone of gaiety. He'd previously slapped a distemper brush on scenes for Lorca's Blood Wedding and other plays put on by fellow students at King's College, London. He had not seen much theatre, as movies – even concerts – came cheaper; the first production that really excited him was Peter Brook's short and gory staging of Antonin Artaud's Spurt of Blood in the RSC's 1964 Theatre of Cruelty season.

While making the rounds in support of As the Palaces Burn – the documentary, in theaters now, chronicling Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe’s legal ordeal and trial in the Czech Republic last year – Blythe and director Don Argott took a minute to sit down for a Pop Culture Personality Test. Unsurprising: Blythe loves the Sex Pistols and doesn’t see the point to writing love songs. Somewhat more surprising: He really likes the Pet Shop Boys, even though they are “the antithesis of everything that I stand for.” Watch it below.

The big winners at last night's 16-hour Oscar ceremony: Dreams. Inspiration. Heroes. So live the impossible, because that’s what Jared Leto's mom would want. Just keep livin', because no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid and your magic is real. Hey, movie stars, we get it — nobody’s against dreams, right? We are all, as Fred Durst would put it, in agreeance here? But like Matthew McConaughey says, "We all need somebody to look up to, somebody to look down on, somebody to chase, somebody to love,...

Fewer superheroes, some singing and a bit more weirdness are just some of the things the Guardian's film critics are hoping to see on the big screen in the next 12 months
Peter Bradshaw: Naturalistic TV type acting, old-fashioned musicals and funnier superheroes
With the conclusion of Breaking Bad in 2013, we saw a revival of the "boxset-tv-is-better-than-the-movies" issue, promoted by pundits who are of an age when leaving the house to go to the cinema is becoming a trial. Undoubtedly, boxset TV offers huge opportunities for an actor to develop a role over hours of screen time – more difficult in the movies, although Bruce Dern and June Squibb in Alexander Payne's excellent Nebraska showed us that the old-fashioned pleasures of the actorly performance were not dead. I should love to see some more of this tasty, organically grown, line-fished naturalistic movie acting in 2014.
Soon we shall see the Coens'...

Minks, a.k.a. Sonny Kilfoyle, is doing the same thing many bands are doing – experimenting. After his debut album, By The Hedge, was a bit of a creative disappointment, (being called Cure ripoffs is never good for your career) and along with the distance from his first album, he also left New York City. Getting away, he discovered a new sound, which is showcased throughout his second album, Tides End, named after his house. Bright, colorful, and poppy, the sophomore album finds that sound and crafts some great cuts.
From the very get-go, “Romans” cheaply shines. The weakest song on the album is the very first one, but it does immediately showcase the radical shift from moody, downer Cure-esque pop to super-synthetic, 80′s bubblegum pop. While it still maintains a slight Minks edge, “Romans” is highly marred from the synth riff that permeates throughout. It’s borderline annoying.

London, July 21 (Reuters) - The swedish artist Avicii hit the top of the British singles chart on Sunday with 'Wake Me Up', which became the fastest selling single of the year, the Official Charts Company said.
The track by the 23 year-old DJ and producer, whose real name is Tim Bergling, sold nearly 267,000 copies to dislodge U.S.-Canadian singer-songwriter Robin Thicke from the top spot. The single is Avicii's second number one this year.
Although he lost out in the singles chart, Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' entered the album chart at number one, pushing American rapper Jay-z's 'Magna Carta Holy Grail' into second place.
Thicke also held off the challenge of the veteran British duo the Pet Shop Boys, whose 12th career album, 'Electric', charted in third place. (Reporting by William James; Editing by Kevin Liffey)...

Neil Tennant has acknowledged that the Pet Shop Boys’ new album will come as something of a relief to the band’s fans, after their most recent efforts diverted from their much-loved disco anthem sound.
“No one got excited when they heard the Pet Shop Boys were releasing an album about living in La and getting old,” he muses to HuffPostUK. “But they strangely got a bit more enlivened by the news that a disco album was on the way.”
The Pet Shop Boys’ mastery of this particular genre has resulted in 50 million album sales, including a catalogue of hits including 'West End Girls', 'Rent' and 'Go West'.
Go on... remind yourself...
For their 12th studio album, 'Electric', they’ve turned to the talents of master-mixer Stuart Price, the man who put Madonna on the dance-floor for the 'Confessions' album.

Barenaked Ladies are incredibly talented and kind of uncool. That's the basic view that's dogged this Canadian pop group throughout its 25 years in the business. A collection of jokers with a silly band name that few "serious music fans" pay much attention to. Bnl are good, goes this refrain, but I hope they don't come up on shuffle when my buddies are in the car.
As if they care. This is the real story of the Barenaked Ladies: a quarter-century on the charts, sold-out concerts around the world, a lengthy list of hits, a legion of devoted fans and an endorsement from Paul McCartney himself. Who's cool now?
When founding member and co-front man Steven Page quit the band four years ago, it had looked like curtains for the Toronto-based quintet. But they surprised many people by staying together, picking themselves back up, and recording 2010's "All In Good Time.

Here at Ology, there's only thing we love more than talking to our favorite musicians, artists, athletes and celebrities: not talking to them. In our ongoing series of Non-Interviews, we'll be asking hard, probing, no-nonsense questions to a rotating cast of influential men and women who are much too busy to actually speak with us.

Welcome to the 5th Annual Pajiba Ten: A list of the 10 Most Bangable Celebrities on the Planet as voted on by our readers. Thanks to new rules which elevate celebrities who have been on the list at list twice into the Pajiba 10 Hall of Fame, we actually have seven new entrants onto the 10 in our 5th year. If you're curious, there are quite a few who just missed the cut this year, including Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, Benedict Cumberbatch, Donald Glover, and -- sadly -- there is no "Doctor Who" representation this year as our worst fears were confirmed: David Tennant and Matt Smith split the vote, while Karen Gillan simply annoyed too many of you in her latest "Who" run to merit the votes necessary.
