Here’s a little known trick for first time filmmakers to land top talent: Write a meaty part for an older woman. Actresses get offered far fewer scripts as they age, and if yours is good — they might just say yes. Writer/director Russell Harbaugh’s debut feature, “Love After Love,” starring Andie MacDowell and Chris O’Dowd as mother and son in mourning, seems to have done just that.

Equal parts swelling and intimate, this haunting teaser evokes the searching and stillness of a soul in limbo, adjusting to a new life without a loved one. Eerie and wordless, MacDowell and O’Dowd ignite the screen in close-ups, communicating heartache and rage with the most subtle of expressions. Harbaugh’s images intrigue: He frames O’Dowd behind a french door, or a dinner party in fading light from just outside the room.

First of all, there’s his instrument. It’s ostensibly a bass, but it’s got six strings, and it’s running through a couple different effects that make it sound like a guitar. Also, Thundercat (né Stephen Bruner) is playing it so fast that he makes the thing sound like a Metallica guitar solo, but instead of thrash metal, he and his band are pumping out a strange mix of extremely adept jazz, funk and R&B, all of which anchor his silky falsetto. (And on one of his recent singles, the equally silky voices of Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins.

Former Suicidal Tendencies bassist Louis Mayorga has filed a lawsuit against his former label boss Lisa Fancher, claiming that he’s owed royalties from the iconic 1983 punk song “Institutionalized.” “Fancher, through her label Frontier, has sold the Album continuously since 1983,” the lawsuit reads. “However, some years ago, Fancher ceased to operate her record label in any semblance of compliance with standard music industry practices, at least with regard to accounting and paying artists.” According to the suit, Fancher “has ceased to provide any royalty statements to Mayorga,” and the musician “has not received a royalty statement...

Wondering how all the DC universe TV spin-offs, crossovers and webseries fit together? We have the answer...
In October 2012, Us network The CW launched the first season of Arrow, after wrapping up no fewer than ten seasons of Superman origin show Smallville a year before. Arrow was a completely new take on the DC Comics character Green Arrow, in a new universe that had nothing to do with Smallville or its version of Oliver Queen/Green Arrow. The series proved quite the hit for The CW, and a second season renewal inevitably followed. In season two, we were introduced to forensic scientist Barry Allen, better known to DC Comics readers as The Flash. Arrow got a third season, The Flash got his own TV show with great success, and the live action shared DC Comics universe on TV was born. And with it the question: how does it all fit together?...

Sometimes you have to die to get recognized. For Flying Lotus, whose 2014 album was called You're Dead, that, thankfully, wasn't true. If "Arrow" had an alternate name, it would be called "Resurrection", or at least "All Hail the Lazarus Pit". I say this — mostly in jest — because "Arrow" is bring another character back from the dead this week in the episode titled "Brotherhood". While Thea (Willa Holland) and Sara (Caity Lotz) needed the help of the Lazarus Pit to bring them back, this character doesn't need magic, he needs discovery. Much like Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), who was thought to be dead until Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) and Curtis (Echo Kellum) discovered his message, this character was also only presumed dead. Who is this mysterious character, now returning to the land of the living? Andrew Diggle, John Diggle's believed-to-be-dead brother. Andy is played by Eugene Byrd, whose acting credits include "Bones", "8 Mile", "Heroes", and previous flashback episodes of "Arrow". According to John Diggle (David Ramsey), Andy was killed by Deadshot (Michael Rowe...

The podcast returns with Joakim being joined by Ian Schultz to discuss Alex Cox’s Repo Man.
From Masters of Cinema:
Arguably the defining cult film of the Reagan era, the feature debut of Alex Cox (Sid & Nancy, Walker, Straight to Hell) is a genre-busting mash-up of atomic-age science fiction, post-punk anarchism, and conspiracy paranoia, all shot through with heavy doses of deadpan humour and offbeat philosophy.
After quitting his dead-end supermarket job, young punk Otto (Emilio Estevez) is initiated as a “repo man” after a chance encounter with automobile repossessor Bud (Harry Dean Stanton). An illicit, high-voltage life follows, including an adrenalised search for a mysterious ‘64 Chevy Malibu loaded with radioactive – and extragalactic – cargo… With an iconic soundtrack (Iggy Pop, Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies), stunning Robby Müller cinematography, and iconoclastic direction, Repo Man remains one of the great debuts of the 1980s.

This week's episode of Arrow goes a long way towards making up for season three's shortcomings...

3.18 Public Enemy
There's been a lot to complain about while watching this season of Arrow. Oliver has become unlikeable, Felicity has been boiled down to mere love interest, and Roy and Diggle have been given nothing to do. It's done some wonderful things too, such as Laurel's journey to becoming the Black Canary and Thea finally being let in on the secret, but the common consensus hasn't been overwhelmingly positive, made worse when comparing it to The Flash.
But this episode, Public Enemy, went a long way to repairing a lot of the damage, coming off as a particularly entertaining spring cleaning session, all while not really wavering from the story the writers clearly want to tell.
Really, with at least half of last week's episode being Diggle-centric, and the...

Diggle's honeymoon doesn't exactly go to plan in this week's packed episode of Arrow season 3...

3.17 Suicidal Tendancies
It feels almost unfair to complain about Arrow’s ongoing Diggle problem this far into the series because, let’s be fair, he’s never been given much in the way of focus and, as much as we may want it to happen, Arrow isn’t really deviating from its original stance on giving its supporting cast much to do outside of Oliver’s mission.
Then again, if Diggle was going to get a season three episode in which to shine, it should have been this one. It was his wedding day, it was Deadshot’s last hurrah (although, no body means no proof of that) and it was seemingly also the conclusion to his background struggle between being on Team Arrow and keeping himself safe for the sake...

Arrow Season 3, Episode 17 “Suicidal Tendencies”

Hey everyone, the Suicide Squad is back… to tell us an heartwrenching story about love, Ptsd, and sacrifice? “Suicidal Tendencies” is an odd episode of Arrow, though one that benefits from one very important thing: the resurrection of John Diggle, whose been reserved to background fodder for most of the season while Ra’s wreaked mayhem and something happened in Hong Kong with some virus not named Mirakura (Alpha/Omega; but you get my point). And in an episode that mostly involves Laurel and Quentin bickering (yawn) and the increasingly grating arrowhead tip-shaped love triangle of Ray, Felicity, and Oliver went for another spin.
While everything in Starling City might be ridiculous, at least “Suicidal Tendencies” offers us the presence of one John Diggle, who is trying to reconcile being a father with being a trained military badass,...

Love will most certainly be in the air in the 17th episode of Arrow Season 3 (titled “Suicidal Tendencies”), when Diggle and Lyla get married again with all of their friends in attendance. However, as the title of the episode sort of suggests, it won’t just be a romance-filled hour of Arrow, as the newlyweds get wrapped up in a mission with the new and improved Suicide Squad, which is still led by Michael Rowe’s Deadshot, but has also now added Amy Gumenick’s Carrie Cutter, aka Cupid, to the team as well after her brief appearance earlier this season on Arrow. And from the look of these photos from the upcoming episode, it appears that it won’t just be Diggle, Lyla, and the Squad getting into some battles, as the pictures below also show Oliver and Ray facing off in full costume. That’s right, the two meet on the streets of…...

If you were hoping that Harley Quinn would be showing up in Arrow s03e17 "Suicidal Tendencies", you'll be disappointed. Arrow executive producer has confirmed [via Comic Book Resources] that the show won't be allowed to use Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel again due to David Ayers' Suicide Squad and Fox's Gotham. The "wink and nod" in season 2 is as close as Arrow will ever come to using the character. Perhaps the reason Michael Jai-White's Bronze Tiger is not returning this season on Arrow is because the character will also appear in Ayer's film? It's also interesting that Guggenheim mentions Gotham as a reason for exclusion as that show's producers said that the character would not be showing up in season one. Perhaps a pre-teen Harley will show up in season two? Arrow returns with all new episodes, March 18th at 8Pm on The CW. ...

[Warning: Spoilers ahead from Wednesday’s episode, “Nanda Parbat.” If you haven’t watched, don’t go any further because spoilers! If you have, read on.]
Did that just happen?!
Arrow may be changed for good following tonight’s momentum-shifting episode. A quick refresher: Oliver Queen was lured to Nanda Parbat to rescue Malcolm Merlyn from the hands of Ra’s al Ghul and the League of Assassins, only to discover that Ra’s didn’t want to kill him. He wanted Oliver to be the next Ra’s al Ghul. Wait, what?
Talk about a game-changer.
But that wasn’t all that took place in the episode – brilliantly directed by Everwood and Rookie Blue star Gregory Smith. It introduced Ray Palmer in all his Atom glory, saw Ray and Felicity take a huge leap forward in their relationship in a moment that broke the Internet (and Olicity fans’ hearts!) and Laurel discovering the truth about Sara’s killer.

While Fury director David Ayer is currently hard at work on bringing the Suicide Squad to the big screen, comic book fans can see another version of the villainous team on TV in Arrow.
Et Online have revealed that they will return to the popular series in episode seventeen, appropriately titled “Suicidal Tendencies”. Unfortunately, Michael Jai White won’t be back as Bronze Tiger, but Michael Rowe Will be back as Deadshot (the character Will Smith is set to play in the 2016 movie).
A new addition to the team is Amy Gumenick as Cupid, a character we met a little earlier in season three. She has a serious thing for The Arrow, so seeing them potentially interact once again promises to be very interesting indeed!
Those are the only members confirmed to appear as of right now, but expect more to follow as two villains don’t make much of a squad!

The small screen Suicide Squad is set to return to The CW's "Arrow" with word today that the current season's seventeenth episode "Suicidal Tendencies" will sport a slightly different incarnation of the group.
Amanda Waller (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) and Deadshot (Michael Rowe) are returning, but Bronze Tiger (Michael Jai White) is gone - replaced by newest member Cupid (Amy Gumenick).
The episode will also introduce Senator Cray (Steven Culp), a corrupt politician who will be at the forefront of a rescue mission in the Republic of Kasnia. Also making another appearance in the episode is Charlotte Ross as Donna Smoak, Felicity's mother.
The CW was reportedly considering a "Suicide Squad" TV series spin-off, plans that were ditched after Warners announced their plans for a "Suicide Squad" movie which begins filming in April.

I came across an amazing beautiful photo essay by Angela Boatwright that she did on punk rockers. They had on all the typical attire you would expect and most were adorned with ill thought out piercings and tattoos. The difference here, tho’, was that these kids were all Latinos. The photos led me to a documentary series Boatwright did on Latino punk rockers that threw concerts in whatever backyard they could find in East Los Angeles. These kids took pride in being from places like Compton, Long Beach, South Gate, East Los and thought of each other as family. What I found incredibly moving was that beyond the ‘Suicidal Tendencies’, ‘Dead Kennedys’ & ‘Misfits’ T-Shirts, beyond the mosh pits and aggressive music were these expressively tenderhearted kids. There’s Anthony who was raised by an O.G. abuelo, ‘Nekro’ who plays acoustic guitar while his abuelita serenades him with a ranchera and sweet faced 14-year-old Lauren who has to be chaperoned by her mother to the gigs. Angela Boatwright shatters your perception of what it is to love punk rock music. As one purple haired young woman stated, “It’s bigger than us”.
LatinoBuzz: I love East L.A and try to go every time I’m in Cali but I had no idea about the backyard Latino punk movement. How did you come across this?
Angela: I discovered two articles online, they were written for L.A. Weekly by an awesome human named Javier Cabral.
LatinoBuzz: You are from Ohio, did you imagine you would be making a film in East La one day?
Angela: Not specifically, but in a way, yes. I lived in NYC for 19 years before I moved to L.A. so my teenage thoughts were more focused on the east coast, however I've always been into aggressive music so in that regard, documenting the East L.A. scene wasn't too far from my initial interests - geographically far but not spiritually.
LatinoBuzz: What was the most important thing you wanted to say about your subjects?
Angela: It seems incredibly obvious to me (and potentially to you and your readers) that music is almost never the "problem". These kids (and all kids, honestly) have valid, distinct and complicated lives. Life is difficult especially when you're young and especially when your dad is in jail, as in Lauren's case. Music is their salvation, their place to belong.
LatinoBuzz: How did you gain their trust?
Angela: I make sure and keep my word for starters (side note: I use the word "kids" in the general sense - many of these "kids" are in their early to mid 20s). And I listen to and attempt to remember the details of their stories. I was a very similar teenager, although I grew up on heavy metal and later, hardcore and grunge.
LatinoBuzz: Who did you relate to most?
Angela: I definitely related to each character (and several of the kids that weren't featured) in their own way. I suppose Lauren's story is the most like my own, however.
LatinoBuzz: I found the kids to be sweet and your affection for them shows. Do you think people pre-judge these kids?
Angela: Sure. And for a million reasons. But people pre-judge everyone, we all do it. It's awesome to get to know individuals you might never speak to or think about in real life through documentary filmmaking. I think that deep down we are all so incredibly similar, I want the audience to be able to relate to the kids as much as possible.
LatinoBuzz: Would you ever re-visit these kids on film later on in life to see where it took them?
Angela: Of course! I'm still in touch with all of them, there have already been some changes in their lives. I love projects through the passage of time. Almost everyone I've photographed personally I've kept in touch with. It's one of my favorite things about being a photographer.
LatinoBuzz: Who do you think they will become?
Angela: I have no idea! I hope they all go on to do amazing things!
LatinoBuzz: Your favorite moment in the film?
Angela: Haha, I spent so many hours editing the episodes - my most favorite moments are very quick and brief. I love the shot of the skinheads in the teaser, for example. I love that shot! There are tons of quotes and moments that didn't make the cut that I love, too. In Episode 3, I love the transition from Lauren's seemingly bratty attitude directly into her father's voice via telephone call from jail. That moment always hits my heart. I cry every time I watch that episode.
LatinoBuzz: Do you ever want to do a fiction narrative?
Angela: Maybe, sure!
LatinoBuzz: What was the Vans connection?
Angela: I had spent four years previous to the Vans project documenting metal bands that tour all over the world and funded it by myself. I was working with Vans photographing their Vans Girls' look-books around the same time. I asked the Vans Girls' art director if she could introduce me to anyone in the video department so that I could show them the teaser for my personal, heavy metal doc. The introduction was made, Vans loved the teaser and asked me to contribute to their 2014 documentary campaign.

When Metallica’s eponymously titled fifth studio album hit shelves on Aug. 12, 1991, fans, critics, and even the band’s Thrash metal brethren felt an instantaneous sense of betrayal. The pointed snarl and metal-up-your-a** belligerence that had come to define their sound during the mid-1980s had been transformed into mainstream merchandise suitable for weddings and Bar Mitzvahs.
What had originally gained traction through small clubs and tape trading was no longer the property of the subculture responsible for its inception, and, for an army of socially disenfranchised heavy metal fans, nothing could be worse than having one of their beacons stolen from them in the name of big business.
For a genre that had always championed individuality and anti-establishment rhetoric, the reality of Metallica joining forces with Bob Rock to create something palatable for the masses was the equivalent of President George H.W. Bush halting the Gulf War to admit...

Adam Green has done an amazing job creating "Holliston". Perhaps his greatest stroke of genius, though, is assembling the perfect cast to bring this comedic gem to life. The lovely ladies of "Holliston", Corri English and Laura Ortiz, talked to Dread Central about the show.
If you enjoyed our Adam Green interview from last week (Part 1 here and Part 2 here), you're sure to love seeing what these two beauties have to say about creating the show from a feminine point of view.
Corri English began, talking about the new season of "Holliston": "I definitely felt that going into Season 2, not only were we much closer as a cast, I think we really kind of hit a stride in terms of playing off each other and there was a comfort zone with trying things. Nothing is really off limits on the set. Sometimes we throw something out there and it doesn't work.

Sometimes, just sometimes, I wish I lived in America. I mean, it’s not all the time but sometimes I wished I lived in America, and generally I wish I didn’t live here, or if I did I could at least freely trek the globe from anywhere to everywhere. Regardless of that though, and to return to my original point, sometimes I wish I lived in America. Sometimes these reasons are music festivals like Coachella and South By South West (SXSW) that stay put and don’t make it to our shores. A festival that has stirred my wanderlust a little bit recently is the Orion Music + More festival line up for 2013. You’ll see why in a moment.

Emilio Estevez is the nihilistic Otto in Alex Cox's Repo Man.
Alex Cox’s (Searchers 2.0) singular science fiction comedy Repo Man remains the quintessential cult comedy film of the 1980s.
The 1984 movie stars the always captivating Harry Dean Stanton (Seven Psychopaths) as a weathered repo man in desolate downtown Los Angeles, and Emilio Estevez (The Breakfast Club) as the nihilistic middle-class punk he takes under his wing. The job becomes more than either of them bargained for when they get involved in reclaiming a mysterious—and otherworldly—Chevy Malibu with a hefty reward attached to it.
Featuring an ultimate early-eighties L.A. punk soundtrack featuring music from Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies, The Circle Jerks, Fear and other, the grungily hilarious R-rated Repo Man still rules (while being a politically trenchant take on President Reagan’s domestic and foreign policy)!
Oh,...

Repo Man
Comedy, thriller, satire, science fiction, punk rock movie: Repo Man is all these things. And none of them. Perhaps these hard-to-classify qualities are the reason why it's still watched today while many far more financially successful movies of the time are forgotten. It's like a drive-in movie scripted by Philip K Dick. But not. Both utterly of and completely out of its time, Alex Cox's 1984 feature debut trades in typical Us iconography such as cars and guns but in an off-kilter fashion. For Cox the mundane is exotic, the exotic is mundane. He delivers a view of the Us that American directors either wouldn't or couldn't – shooting around a landmark-free downtown La, something the recent Drive was enthusiastically praised for. Emilio Estevez plays disillusioned youth Otto, who falls in with a team of automobile repossessors as they search for a Chevy Malibu with a high bonus and...

"The Woman in Black" Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Ciaran Hinds, Janet McTeer Rated: PG-13 for thematic material and violence/disturbing images Common Sense Media rating: 13+ Thanks to an aggressive marketing campaign, everyone who watches television knows that Daniel Radcliffe is starring in the Hammer Films horror flick "The Woman In Black." Naturally, this means tweens and even older elementary-aged kids may be interested in seeing Radcliffe in his first post-Potter role. After all, the Boy Who Lived already vanquished You Know Who in a really intense, PG-13-rated final installment to the Potter saga, so what's a little veiled Victorian ghost? Depending on the age of your kids, a lot actually, because a boy wizard trying to defeat a known villain is vastly different than Arthur Kipps, a young attorney dealing with the estate of a mysterious woman with a haunted estate. He must do battle not with a wand but...
