Panic Fest offers up another fantastic selection of shorts this year, but two in particular have stuck with me. Facies and Apotemnofilia both deliver shocking, stomach-churning moments of extreme violence that are memorable enough for the bodily reactions they elicit. But it’s their equal interest in the visceral and conceptual that makes them feel special, and like great candidates for future development into features. Facies, co-written and co-directed by Raúl Cerezo, one half of the directing duo behind The Elderly and The Passenger, along with Javier Trigales and Carlos Moriana, pulls viewers into a devastating story of the Spanish Inquisition. In 1692, more than 200 years into the Inquisition’s crusade on all perceived enemies of Catholicism, an inquisitor (Carlos Santos) forces an inventor (Daniel Ortiz)...

Plot: Picking up a few months after the end of Vacation Friends, this hilarious sequel finds newly married couple Marcus and Emily inviting their uninhibited besties Ron and Kyla, who are also newly married and have a baby, to join them for a vacation when Marcus lands an all-expenses-paid trip to a Caribbean resort. His reason for traveling there in the first place is to meet with the owners of the resort to bid on a construction contract for a hotel they own in Chicago. But when Kyla’s incarcerated father, Reese, is released from San Quentin and shows up at the resort unannounced at the worst possible moment, things get out of control, upending Marcus’ best-laid plans and turning the vacation friends’ perfect trip into total chaos.

So, is it too late for a quick “vacay”? Sure, most of the schools are back in session, but since Labor Day is only next weekend, why not? And how about bringing along that wild and crazy couple you met a couple of years ago? Well, that could be trouble, though the main character in this comedy sequel believes he has everything under control. Yeah…right. So just what kind of chaos awaits in the Carribean for that quirky quartet (actually a sextet this time) in Vacation Friends 2? Aside from lots of frequent flyer miles, of course.
This farce actually begins in an airport terminal as Marcus (Lil Rel Howery) and his wife Emily (Yvonne Orji) leave their plane from Chicago to get their connecting flight to the Caribbean. Oh, and they’re meeting up with the wild and wacky Ron (John Cena) and Kyla (Meredith Hanger). And they...

Say this for “Vacation Friends 2”: It isn’t a drastic drop-off from the original. That has less to do with it being a better-than-usual sequel than it does with the first film being just okay. Still, one supposes there’s something to be said for consistency. Its setup repeats the odd-couple dynamic of its predecessor, with Lil Rel Howery and Yvonne Orji once again playing the straight man/woman to John Cena and Meredith Hagner’s free-spirited loose cannons. Opposites attract, and so the two couples naturally became besties over several drunken nights in the first film. Not everything that happens in Mexico stays in Mexico, however, and so here we are again in writer-director Clay Tarver’s follow-up, which premieres on Hulu almost exactly two years after its predecessor.

2021 was unquestionably the Summer of Cena, as John Cena appeared in "Fast 9," "The Suicide Squad," and the truly delightful "Vacation Friends." The latter was, in this writer's opinion, the first comedy film since "Blockers" that truly knew how to play to Cena's comedic strengths as a leading man, and pairing him alongside Lil Rel Howery ("Get Out'), Yvonne Orji ("Insecure"), and Meredith Hagner ("Search Party") was a recipe for comedy gold. The film was a huge hit on Hulu, snagging a sequel greenlight less than a month after its debut on the Disney-owned streamer. Less than two years later, the foursome is back for "Vacation Friends 2," reuniting with writer-director Clay Tarver in the process.
The sequel picks up a few months after the first film, which saw Ron (Cena) and a pregnant Kyla (Hagner) finally tying the knot, doing so with their new friends Marcus (Howery) and Emily (Orji) by their side.

“Being on ‘Primo’ is a blessing,” assures Carlos Santos, who plays Ryan on the eight-episode Amazon Freevee comedy. “My imposter syndrome is at its lowest. Very manageable.” As he says the words, Santos’s co-stars on “Primo” Henry Esteve (who plays Mike) and Johnny Rey Diaz nod in understanding. The trio represent three of the five uncles on the series who surround Rafa Gonzales (played by Ignacio Diaz-Silverio), a 16-year-old high school junior who carries the hopes and dreams of his extended Latinx family in San Antonio, Texas. The uncles regularly dispense loving guidance (read: unsolicited advice) to young Rafa, and the actors who play them believe they’ve died and gone to performance heaven to be on a series that afford them such a positive, supportive environment in which to work. “It’s hands-down the most collaborative and beautiful experience I’ve ever had on a set,” Diaz agrees.

Rafa Gonzales, the protagonist of the exceedingly likable new family comedy Primo, lives in San Antonio with his mother, Drea. Their modest ranch house should be more than enough for the two of them, if it weren’t for the fact that all five of Drea’s loud, opinionated, intrusive, knucklehead brothers are constantly there. We’re less than a month into 2023, but there’s already an early frontrunner for the year’s most accurate movie title. You can love or hate “There’s Something Wrong with the Children,” but nobody can deny that there is definitely something wrong with those children. (Though “A Sad Orgy Can Really Ruin Your Life” would have been an equally accurate title.) The latest Blumhouse movie about creepy kids is a fitting addition to one of horror’s most reliable subgenres, and it manages to elevate itself above the competition through some genuinely compelling adult drama and a delightful Duffer Brothers-esque supernatural twist. And it’s infinitely more enjoyable than any direct-to-streaming January horror movie has any right to be.

The Blumhouse-produced There’s Something Wrong with the Children adds to a long, enduring line of evil kids in horror. Even the title suggests a classic tale of bad seeds terrorizing adults. Director Roxanne Benjamin (Body at Brighton Rock, Southbound) and screenwriters T.J. Cimfel and David White make it apparent early on that they’re more interested in using a familiar setup to explore new angles within the subgenre, subverting a few tropes in the process.

Roxanne Benjamin has quietly become a staple of horror over the better part of the last decade. The filmmaker made her imprint on many a genre fan with her segment in the much-beloved anthology "Southbound," before also contributing to "Xx." A B-Series movie of the “friends in a log cabin” type with terrifying children… but with no corn.
Storyline
After Margaret and Ben take off on a week-end escapade with their lifelong friends, Ellie and Thomas and their two small children, something supernatural starts happening when Ellie and Thomas´s kids start behaving strangely after they disappear in the woods at night, which makes Ben suspect something weird is happening.
Movie Review
This is a movie divided into two parts, which starts slowly and which it is hard to enter in spite of its great start (those fluorescent credits and good camera movement). Then, it relaxes, offers us a presentation of the characters which is rather unsubstantial (daddies and moms a little fed-up with life) and later drops us into terror…...

There’s Something Wrong with the Children opens to the bombastically ominous strains of The Sisters of Mercy’s “More” playing over tinted footage of children running and a storm rolling in. After some brief, inconsequential dialogue the film’s title flashes on the screen in bright green letters. It’s a wonderfully retro note to start things off on.
Ben and Margaret are on vacation with their friends Ellie, Thomas and their kids Spencer (David Mattle; Life & Beth) and Lucy.
A hike in the woods reveals the remains of a building not on the map, and exploring the building reveals a seemingly bottomless pit that the children insist has a light glowing in it. That should be their cue to pack the cars and go home,...

Based on the title of this review, I'm sure some readers expect me to eviscerate Blumhouse's "There's Something Wrong with the Children." It's likely those aren't the same people who had diaper discount mailers sent out to them the moment they turned 18. Targeted ads assume having children is what some of us must do -- despite our personal feelings or fiscal abilities to raise, birth, or adopt children. That's incredibly scary, as it reduces body autonomy to be a conditional term for non-parents. (Not to mention the cis-heteronormativity of it all that can trigger gender dysphoria and the deepest of sighs from those who don't want to have children or do but sadly can't in the queer community.)
Before I dive in further, I'd like to give flowers to director Roxanne Benjamin. Unequivocally, she captures how frustrating, confusing, and insulting this attitude feels through Margaret's (Alisha Wainwright) perspective. While the...

Plot: A family takes a weekend trip with longtime friends and their two young children, but, they suspect something supernatural when the kids behave strangely after disappearing into the woods overnight.
Review: There are two kinds of Blumhouse movies: the ones they put a lot of money behind and the ones they drop with little fare, hoping they’ll be a surprise hit. There’s Something Wrong With The Children appears to be the latter. A horror movie about creepy children is essentially a genre staple at this point. We get several every year and their execution is varied. But the setup for this one had a lot of potential, with two friendly couples going out to a cabin in the woods. One of the couples has children and bring them with, while the other has decided not to have children. You can see where there’d be conflict. But...

Never let your kids play in a creepy cave out in the middle of nowhere…especially one that features a bottomless pit. The parents in Blumhouse’s There’s Something Wrong with the Children – which just unveiled an official trailer – apparently didn’t get that memo.
The horror film stars Alisha Wainwright (Raising Zion), Zach Gilford (The Midnight Club), Amanda Crew (Silicon Valley), Carlos Santos (The Valet), David Mattle, and Briella Guiza. Body at Brighton Rock‘s Roxanne Benjamin directs from a screenplay by T.J. Cimfel and Dave White.

A cabin in the woods, a struggling marriage, and two giggling children who are ominously covered in blood? The upcoming Blumhouse and Epix collaboration has all the elements for disaster, so it's no wonder that it slots firmly into the horror/psychological thriller genres. It certainly doesn't help that the title alludes to one of horror's most reliable sources of dread, "There's Something Wrong with the Children."
Before supernatural horror even becomes a factor in the plot this film already has one of the most horrifying premises imaginable. When two couples head into the woods for a weekend getaway, one duo convinces the other to watch their children for the night while they take time to hash out some martial issues. Isn't the thought of unanticipated babysitting responsibilities terrifying?! Unfortunately, it only gets worse from here. Somehow, the babysitting couple loses sight of the children in the woods and when they're finally retrieved,...

"When we woke up they were gone!" Paramount + MGM have revealed an official trailer for a freaky horror indie film titled There's Something Wrong with the Children, the latest from indie genre filmmaker Roxanne Benjamin. It's another Blumhouse production, too. This is debuting directly on VOD in January in just a few more weeks from now. A family takes a weekend trip with longtime friends and their two young children, but, they suspect something supernatural when the kids behave strangely after disappearing into the woods overnight. What's going on with these creepy kids? And why are there so many evil kid movies recently? The film stars Alisha Wainwright, Zach Gilford, Amanda Crew, Carlos Santos, Briella Guiza, and David Mattle. This looks like it gets pretty scary with these kids - are they possessed or what? That red outfit one of them is wearing is the perfect costume choice to make it extra unsettling.

The best in show just got even better.
“The American Rescue Dog Show” has added Paula Abdul, Leslie Jordan and Yvette Nicole Brown as celebrity “ex-paw-t” judges, ABC announced Thursday.
The show features rescued pups from around the country as they “strut their fluff” and compete for a series of titles, including best in underbite, best in snoring, best in belly rubs and more. For each winning dog in the seven categories, a 10,000 donation will be made by Petco Love to a local animal welfare organization. Each category winner will compete for the title of best in rescue, which will culminate in a 100,000 donation.
