Last week’s Tony Award nominations translated into box office sales for at least some of the contenders, with A Strange Loop seeing the biggest boost. The musical, which topped the Tony list with 11 nominations, saw a 213,871 increase in its weekly grosses, taking in 690,668 for the week ending May 15.
Overall, the 35 Broadway productions grossed 30,349,653, a slight 3 dip from the previous week’s 31,199,660, a decline largely attributable to the 1,054,792 drop in box office at Moulin Rouge! The Musical, which canceled four of its usual eight performances due to Covid cases among the cast. Moulin, with Broadway favorite Derek Klena now leading the cast, took in 537,705 for four performances, filling 91 of available seats.
Also losing ground was Lincoln Center Theater’s The Skin of Our Teeth, which canceled three performances due to Covid, dropping 58,736 from the previous week to 115,745 for its five performances.

While the nominations for the 74th annual Tony Awards were determined by 41 theater professionals, winners will be decided by 784 members of the Broadway community.
Only 18 shows were eligible for consideration by the nominating committee. On the play side, there are 10 original works and four revivals in the running. Over on the musical side, four new tuners are in contention; no musical revivals qualified. The cutoff date for eligibility was February 19, 2020. If you’re confused as to who is actually able to compete for the newly announced virtual Tony Awards this fall, you’re not alone. The Tony Awards Administration Committee announced a new cut off date of February 19, 2020. That means that the 2019-2020 Broadway season was cut incredibly short.
Musical races are most heavily affected by the shortened season. “West Side Story” will have to wait until next year to compete as it opened after the February 19th eligibility cutoff date. Other scheduled revivals of “Caroline, or Change” and “Company” were postponed due to the Broadway shutdown. As such there will be no Revival of a Musical category this year. Other categories, like Best Musical and Director of a Musical, will likely see their number of nominees reduced to three due to a limited number of contenders.
Luckily, there are plenty of plays in contention since many of these non-musical outings premiere in the fall.

In Jagged Little Pill, a record album gets its own jukebox musical, though there’s none of the Wikipedia-style rat-a-tat biographical highlights (airbrushed or otherwise) that accompanied Donna Summer, The Temptations and all the other post-Jersey Boys superstars on their trips to the stage. With an earnest, ambitious and overwrought year-in-the-life tale of a fictional, stereotypical suburban Connecticut family strapped to the music of Alanis Morissette – particularly the star-making 1995 album that gives the show, opening tonight on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre, its title – Jagged Little Pill is a very crowded home to big issues, societal worries, and, oddly enough, storybook outcomes.

Welcome to Rumorville! Here you can learn about casting news that’s about to break in Hollywood. These speculations might be only rumors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t follow the trail all the way to the audition room. “Magic Mike” MusicalIt looks like Broadway is ready to rain men! Creators of “Magic Mike” have been pushing for a musical version of the film, leading to “Magic Mike Live” in Las Vegas and London and now, seemingly soon, a musical adaptation. A recent Instagram post from Broadway actor Matt Doyle showed him, Derek Klena, Cheyenne Jackson, John Behlmann, Dyllón Burnside, Heath Calvert, Nick Rashad, and Ana Villafañe together at what seems to be a rehearsal for a reading of the musical, which is currently in its development stages. The post was, then, shared by writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who wrote, “Thanks, Gang, for a great week of work on Magic!

“American Vandal” is the Netflix true crime mockumentary that has all the Emmy buzz, but there is another one that voters must consider: “Party Monster: Scratching the Surface.” Ok, it’s sadly not a real doc, but it is a real episode of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” that finds the comedy operating at the peak of its abilities.
The third episode of Season 4, “Party Monster: Scratching the Surface” is a standalone episode presented as a half-hour HouseFlix documentary — the streaming offshoot of Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) and Titus’ (Tituss Burgess) cassette tape mail-order company of choice, Columbia House — “directed & everything by” DJ Fingablast (Derek Klena). “Kimmy Schmidt” die-hards will immediately recognize him as Douglas, Jacqueline’s (Jane Krakowski) dog masseuse/boy toy, from Season 2, and as the Mets party cruise DJ in the Season 3 finale. Profoundly, delightfully dim, Finga decides to film his quest to locate his childhood DJ idol, DJ Slizzard,...

As we’ve come to expect from shows with Tina Fey as an executive producer, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” contains no shortage of fantastic deep callbacks to both existing and fictional media, from “Kimothy Olyphant, this is not ‘Justified'” to the return of “Gals on the Town,” the “Sex and the City”-esque drama that originated on “30 Rock” and asks if women “can be good at their jobs?”
But the premiere of Season 4’s first half brought with it not just the show’s most in-depth cultural reference, but a game-changing installment for the series, one which broke the show out of its established format for an episode that deliberately mimicked the true crime format that Netflix has found major success with.
Well, success by the most quantifiable reference we have for Netflix shows: buzz. Even without exact numbers, though, there’s no question that shows like “Making a Murderer,...

It’s a risky business, making a musical not from a story demanding to be told but from a set of songs merely available to be used. “Jagged Little Pill,” American Repertory Theater’s world premiere based on the 1995 Grammy-winning alt-rock smash, triumphantly avoids the pitfalls. Always engaging, often moving and even rousing, the show boasts dramatic interest and integrity on its own theatrical terms, courtesy of director Diane Paulus, first-time librettist Diablo Cody and that peerless, soulful balladeer of the modern Western condition, Alanis Morissette.
The smash-hit album, written in collaboration with Glen Ballard (also credited here), garnered praise for its suavely blended musical influences and deeply-held personal feelings. It also attracted brickbats from critics objecting to excessive insularity and unseemly anger, but such charges seem baseless now. Heard at a 20+ year remove, the songs of “Jagged Little Pill” impress as sage rather than wantonly ferocious, and prescient in...

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 4 will be back for its final episodes in 2019. Here's a new trailer!
It's a miracle! Kimmy, Titus, Jacqueline, and Lillian are returning for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season 4. This season will be broken up into two parts. Netflix announced that the first six episodes of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season 4 will drop on the service on May 30. The second half of the season will be released later in 2018.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt stars Ellie Kemper, Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski and Carol Kane. Guests during season three included Maya Rudolph, Daveed Diggs, Laura Dern, and the return of Jon Hamm as The Reverend.
