In a cinema that is famous for its extremity and peculiarity, Sogo Ishii manages to stand out, with films like “Burst City” and “Tokyo Blood”. In that fashion, even when he directs a satire, the result is not the expected, to say the least.

The Kobayashi family finally manage to buy a house, with the hard work of the father, Katsuhiko, a white-collar employee. Despite their happiness, there seems to be something wrong with its members, as Katsuhiko believes that they suffer from some kind of psychosis. His wife, Saeko is a bit extreme in the way she acts, a tendency that reaches its apogee when Katsuhiko's father, Yasukuni, comes to live with them, as she ends up even dancing sensually for him and his elderly friends. Furthermore, she keeps calling her husband, “father.” The son, Masaki has become...

All images were taken by Daryl Harding from the PlayStation 5 version. Code provided by Sega. The last 12 months have been very good for Like a Dragon fans. Starting with Like a Dragon: Ishin! last February, developers Ryu Ga Gotoku have graced us with three titles to play, all better than the last. That final game in the year-long trio of titles, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth releases this Friday and is the best game of the three – and it's not even close. Ichiban, the lovable ex-Tojo member turned Hero of Yokohama from Yakuza: Like a Dragon , and Kiryu, the protagonist from the rest of the franchise, team up to find Ichi's mother in Hawaii in the series' first international location, all while dealing with their mortality and whatever crap (sometimes literally!) is thrown their way. You'd think that the biggest Like a Dragon game yet would start with some huge bang,...

Over the years, Godzilla has been largely depicted as a destroyer. A living and breathing embodiment of death and destruction. The 1960s and ‘70s, however, are a notable exception. After having previously decimated Japan on more than one occasion, the iconic kaijū returned in a different capacity. Godzilla had gone from the planet’s leading ruiner to its greatest savior. This radical change now entailed Godzilla protecting humans as opposed to threatening them upon each landfall. The transformation, weird as it is, was gradual enough that fans were able to acclimate. Or, in the case of those who began their Godzilla education with these “heroic” films rather than the very first, certain G-Fans always saw Godzilla as mankind’s supreme guardian. As if turning the walking metaphor for Wmd into a hulking humanitarian wasn’t bizarre enough, Godzilla assumed an even stranger role early into his career: he was suddenly a single parent.

Netflix added another title to its rapidly expanding Japan live-action originals slate Wednesday with the announcement of the romantic drama series Beyond Goodbye.
The series is an original story by prolific Japanese screenwriter Yoshikazu Okada (Bl Metamorphosis, The Last 10 Years). It co-stars Kasumi Arimura, known for the Japanese blockbuster We Made a Beautiful Bouquet and the Netflix feature Call Me Chihiro, and Kentaro Sakaguchi, a TV drama regular and recent star of the feature drama success The Last 10 Years (2022).
The film tells the story of Saeko (Arimura), who suddenly loses her fiance Yusuke in a tragic traffic accident. As she tries to overcome her grief, she meets Naruse (Sakaguchi), a man who strangely reminds her of Yusuke. Little does she know that Naruse had received Yusuke’s heart a few months prior to their encounter — a heart still in love and holding all the memories of Yusuke and Saeko’s relationship.

Brimming with magical realism, sensuality, and humor, the final film by revered filmmaker Imamura Shôhei tells the story of Sasano Yosuke (Yakusho Kôji), an unemployed salaryman who arrives in a remote fishing village following a rumor of hidden treasure. Instead, he meets Aizawa Saeko (Shimizu Misa), a charming and unusual woman with a unique problem: a well of warm water inside her longing for release. Saeko faces both shame and adoration for her condition, which the local anglers believe feeds the river and its fish. Intrigued and enamored, Yosuke decides to take up a new life as a fisherman. Through their passionate affair, Imamura paints a picture of longing, fantasy, and the search for true happiness in the most unexpected of places that’s both “nonchalantly freaky and uncommonly pleasurable”.

Graduating as Ozu’s assistant with his debut feature-length at Shochiku in 1960, Masahiro Shinoda (b. 1931) saw the dawn of the Japanese New Wave and rose to prominence alongside the likes of Nagisa Oshima, Yasuzo Masumura, Koreyoshi Kurahara, and Shohei Imamura among a whole host of others. Though he would spend most of his career reinterpreting and reimagining whole genres including the yakuza film and jidaigeki, the films across his four-decade-long career would predominantly be united by a re-examination of Japanese historical, societal, and national identity, complete with a focus on alienation, mythologies, and religious and moral turmoil. Frequently coupled with composer Toru Takemitsu, cinematographers Masao Kosugi and Tatsuo Suzuki, and actress Shima Iwashita (whom he would go on to marry), Shinoda’s films grapple with man’s perturbing darkness and its effect on the personal and national conscience. Like most of his Nūberu Bāgu compatriots, Shinoda frequently negated cinematic and narrative traditions,...

Very rarely has the world of Yakuza been portrayed in such cinematic glory, as in the then 33-year-old Masahiro Shinoda’s break out film, which was based on an original story by Shintaro Ishihara, leading figure of the Sun Tribe generation and scenarist of “Crazed Fruit”. Surprisingly, at least when looked in retrospective, the film was not successful from the beginning, since the script writer of the film, Ataru Baba, did not like Shinoda’s approach at all, while the extensive gambling scenes “Pale Flower” featured caused trouble for Shochiku with the censorship board, forcing them to shelve the movie for a number of months. Now, however, and thanks to another excellent release by Criterion, we can enjoy one of Shinoda’s greatest works (if not the best).

In an era where the anime/manga adaptations were much less in frequency and quality, the live-action edition of “City Hunter” was one of the most accomplished, particularly due to the combination of Wong Jing as director and Jackie Chan as protagonist, both of which could be characterized as the embodiments of the action comedy, that is the main genre of the franchise.
Ryo Saeba and his assistant Kaori Makimura (who is in love with him and has to put up with his constant womanizing and lazyness) are assigned to locate Shizuko Imamura, the runaway daughter of the CEO of a prominent Japanese newspaper. After a fight that ends up with Kaori abandoning him, Ryo finds himself on Shizuko’s heels aboard a leisure ship, which, unfortunately for both of them, is under attack by an international crime syndicate headed by “Don Mac” who wants to kidnap the passengers.
