Sunday night’s 96th Academy Awards signaled the end of a memorable Oscar season, inspiring Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery along with news and features editor Ray Richmond and Tariq Khan – prolific Gold Derby contributor and encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire – to slug it out one last time over Zoom and mourn the categories that got away in their forecast. But before grieving their misguided last-minute prediction switches, the men discussed what they liked about the ceremony itself. Watch their colorful and opinionated discussion above.
Dixon loved the banter interplay of presenter duos Arnold Schwarzenegger/Danny DeVito and Emily Blunt/Ryan Gosling. Montgomery found it a “pretty solid” show that peaked for him in Jonathan Glazer’s acceptance speech after winning international film for “The Zone of Interest.” Davidson applauded director Mstyslav Chernov’s powerful speech after winning in Best Documentary Feature for “20 Days in Mariupol.

As the final days tick down to Sunday’s 96th Academy Awards, Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery, along with news and features editor Ray Richmond and Tariq Khan – regular Gold Derby contributor and encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire – got together on Zoom to slug it out over their Oscar predictions in all 23 categories.
With an “Oppenheimer” steamroller forecast on nearly everyone’s radar, there was plenty of consensus among the guys, including the fact “Oppenheimer” is a lock for Best Picture and its director Christopher Nolan for Best Director. Also, they’re unanimous in picking Robert Downey Jr. in supporting actor for (ho-hum) “Oppenheimer” and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) in supporting actress, both of whom have treated awards season as their personal plaything while sweeping up everything in sight. “It’s kind of Christopher Nolan’s fault that he made awards season so boring,...

While there remains plenty of suspense surrounding the SAG Awards film categories at the ceremony taking place at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall this Saturday at 5 p.m. Pst/8 p.m. Est (streaming over Netflix), there is decidedly less drama when it comes to the TV categories. It’s simply a fact. At least, this is the way Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Daniel Montgomery and Marcus James Dixon, news and features editor Ray Richmond and encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire Tariq Khan saw it during their SAG Awards TV category predictions slugfest this week. The consensus is that “Succession” will sweep the three TV drama categories, “The Bear” the three comedy categories and “Beef” the limited series/TV pair. There may be some non-“Bear” wiggle room in at least one category. More on that in a moment. Watch the editors’ colorful discussion above.

It’s been presumed for months now that the lead actress race in film categories at the various ceremonies was destined to be a two-way race between Emma Stone for “Poor Things” and Lily Gladstone for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Lately, it’s been more of a one-way race, with Stone topping BAFTA, the Golden Globes and Choice Choice honors. But in a Screen Actors Guild Film Awards predictions slugfest this week in advance of Saturday’s ceremony, Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery and news and features editor Ray Richmond were asked to consider a third contender: Margot Robbie for “Barbie.” This is because they were joined by encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire and regular Gold Derby contributor Tariq Khan, who made a convincing case that Robbie was poised for a massive upset based on his personal survey of some 500 SAG Awards voters.

What will the list of winners at this Sunday’s British British Academy of Film and Television Arts (better known by its acronym BAFTA) Film Awards look like? During their lively debate this week, they both individually and collectively foresaw a coronation for “Oppenheimer” in the Best Picture and Best Director (Christopher Nolan) categories as well as in several acting and crafts lineups and numerous honors for “Poor Things”. Looked at one way, the 75th Emmy Awards on Monday night yielded the most predictable (read: boring) of ceremonies. Everything went according to form. “Succession” was expected to dominated the drama series categories. “The Bear” was supposed to preside over comedy series. “Beef” was thought to be a shoo-in among the limited series lineups. And that’s exactly what happened. However, looked at another way, Gold Derby voters accurately forecast the winners in 26 of the 27 categories, which is quite the feat. Still, meeting for a slugfest the morning after the Emmys, senior editors Marcus James Dixon, Daniel Montgomery and Denton Davidson and news and features editor Ray Richmond were officially underwhelmed, hoping for an upset or two but finding just one category that didn’t go according to form: Best Variety/Talk Series, where the outgoing “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” defied the Gold Derby odds. Watch their animated discussion above.

The 2024 SAG Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday, January 10. Gold Derby editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon, Daniel Montgomery and Ray Richmond were joined by Oscar Expert Tariq Khan to discuss who’s in, who’s out and what it means for the Oscars. Watch our lively slugfest above.
When it came to the biggest shock of the morning, “It has to be Mark Ruffalo missing for Best Supporting Actor, right?” asks Khan. Instead, the guild favored Ruffalo’s “Poor Things” co-star, Willem Dafoe. “I actually thought it would be the other way around,” he continues. “Mark Ruffalo had the showier, hammier performance and SAG eats that up. It’s funny, this happened the year of ‘Spotlight.’ The film got in for Best Cast and he missed out on an individual nomination. But ‘Spotlight’ won Best Cast. ‘Poor Things’ missed out on Best Cast. Still recovering from watching and/or covering the Golden Globes on Sunday night, Gold Derby senior editors Marcus James Dixon, Denton Davidson and Daniel Montgomery, news and features editor Ray Richmond and encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire Tariq Khan sat down Monday morning (Pacific Time) to sort out what they had just seen hours before. Davidson was interviewing those arriving on the red carpet (assessment: freezing), while Richmond hung out in the general press room recording Q&As with winners backstage (assessment: uninspired) and Dixon, Montgomery and Khan watched it all unfold on TV as the awards gods intended. Their overall evaluation was that the comedy from presenters was hit-and-miss and first-time host Jo Koy fell flat, but that in general the results – mostly predictable though they may have been – supply a valuable gauge for the SAG, Critics Choice and Oscar races coming up. Watch their colorful and opinionated slugfest above.

“Is it a foregone conclusion that ‘Succession’ will win?” wonders Gold Derby Editor Daniel Montgomery about the Golden Globe race for Best Drama Series. He discussed his predictions in all 12 TV categories with Editor Marcus James Dixon and Expert Tariq Khan. Listen to their slugfest below.
“I would say that ‘Succession’ being the phenomenon that it has been, it’s hard not to give it this big farewell hug, if you will. So that’s why I think it seems pretty safe,” argues Khan. It doesn’t hurt that the series earned a record nine nominations this year, more than any TV program has ever gotten in a single season. Dixon agrees that “Succession” “went out with a huge bang. Everyone loved it. I think it’s one of the easiest calls of the night.”

“No hard feelings to the guy, but now we can actually focus on the dancing more than who’s got the rabid fan base that won’t stop voting people in,” says Gold Derby editor Daniel Montgomery about Harry Jowsey, a “Dancing with the Stars” fan-favorite who was ultimately eliminated in sixth place at the end of “A Celebration of Taylor Swift.” Montgomery discussed this and more with contributors Jeffrey Kare and Cordell Martin in this week’s slugfest. Watch their discussion above.
Martin was worried that Alyson Hannigan or Charity Lawson might be eliminated instead based on the combination of their judges’ scores and viewer votes, especially after host Alfonso Ribeiro noted that there were more votes on Swift night than any other night of the competition. “I wasn’t surprised. I knew she was going to be someone that was going to be a surprise elimination,” says Gold Derby contributor Cordell Martin about the sudden ouster of Lele Pons on “Dancing with the Stars” at the end of “Music Video Night.” “As it has gotten closer towards the end of the competition it just felt that she didn’t have the opportunity to really find her footing and become a top contender.
