The organization that administers the Peabody Awards has established an East Coast board of directors as it looks to raise its profile in the broader media landscape.
The 18 board members include Katie Couric, Vice Media CEO Nancy Dubuc, PBS president-ceo Paula Kerger of PBS and MTV Documentary Films president Sheila Nevins. The board of directors will be tasked with expanding the Peabody Awards’ media visibility with nonprofits, policy makers, and the public. The board is separate from the jurors who determine the winners of Peabody Awards every year.
“This new board serves as a complement to our existing West Coast board and brings the totality of what we do into focus,” said Peabody executive director Jeffrey Jones. “Their collective experience in journalism, documentary filmmaking, radio and podcasting, nonprofit management, and issue-conscious work reflects the diverse constituencies we partner with and promote. We welcome their participation, and appreciate the board’s...

Of all the panels I attended at Doc NYC, the one called Protecting Yourself, on November 16, gave me the most hope for the future. The filmmakers were an impressive line-up of first-timers and veteran filmmakers, linked by their willingness to put themselves in dangerous situations in order to shine a light on stories otherwise cloaked in secrecy, denial and misinformation. The panel was moderated by Caty Borum Chattoo, Co-Director of the Center for Media & Social Impact at American University. At several points, the audience was asked not to tweet or do social media on certain statements. Some details […]...

Four documentary projects that screened at AFI Docs 2015 film festival in Washington DC have been chosen to receive funding from the new AFI Docs/NBCUniversal Impact Grants.
The grants were created to support social action and outreach for the four documentaries that took place at the first-ever AFI Docs Impact Lab.
The programme not only plans to garner financial support, but also partner with the Center for Media & Social Impact (Cmsi) at American University and Cmsi Co-Director Caty Borum Chattoo to measure the social impact each film generates.
“NBCUniversal is excited to have joined with AFI on this initiative to help filmmakers find innovative ways to create a positive impact through their films,” said Beth Colleton, svp of corporate social responsibility at NBCUniversal.
“We believe these grants will drive awareness and education around important social issues by engaging consumers, communities and government, and help these filmmakers also be change makers.”
