Since "Verzuz" launched in March 2020, it has hosted some of the greatest showdowns in modern music between singers, songwriters, and producers. The latest installment featured R&b legends Anthony Hamilton and Musiq Soulchild going head-to-head for the Valentine's Day special. During the battle, Kevin Ross performed a soulful rendition of "Lessons (Remix)" alongside Hamilton and guests Eric Roberson and Raheem DeVaughn. Popsugar caught up with Ross after the battle, and he describes the event as a "surreal experience."
As a Grammy-nominated R&b singer, songwriter, and producer, Ross has worked with big-name artists, such as Ari Lennox, Trey Songz, Nicki Minaj, Toni Braxton, and Jamie Foxx. Formerly signed to Motown Records, Ross made what he calls "the biggest leap of faith as a man and an artist" when he decided to leave the record label in 2018. The following year, he founded his own record label, Art...

On the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s murder at the hands of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, Bun B has released “This World,” whose video serves as a capsule of intense, historic protest against anti-black racism.
“They’ve been treating my people like they unequal since the slave ships,” the Ugk rapper notes in a verse that threads the abuses of the past to today’s injustices. The song, which Bun B shared a snippet of last August, also features Mississippi rapper Big K.R.I.T., George Floyd’s friend Trae Tha Truth,...

Raheem DeVaughn pledges his devotion to a partner in the new single “When a Man,” a throwback hip-hop soul cut. DeVaughn promises foot rubs, baths, home-cooked meals, and more: “When a man loves his girl,” he sings, “he’ll do anything to show her that she’s his world.”
The track was produced by Apollo Brown, a prolific hip-hop producer who has collaborated with the likes of Ghostface Killah and O.C. from the collective of New York hip-hop luminaries known as the Diggin’ in the Crates crew. “When a...

“Marvin Used to Say” has the tone of a soul lullaby, with muted funk bass, snapped fingers, and lightly strummed acoustic guitar. But this is not a cradle song — instead, all those soft textures serve as a backdrop for Raheem DeVaughn’s pointed reflection on racist violence.
The track opens with a bleak couplet: “Police killing my brother in the street/No justice no peace,” DeVaughn sings sweetly. “They said the world is changing,” he adds — “it ain’t for the better.” He continues in this vein for several minutes...

In 1989, Quincy Jones had already amassed one of the most enviable discographies in pop history, playing, writing, arranging, or producing for Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Lesley Gore, The Brothers Johnson, George Benson, Patti Austin, and Michael Jackson.
But the legendary polymath still had more to do — Jones set out to create an album that “represents everything I have worked for after 40 years,” according to The Billboard Book of Number One R&b Hits. That turned into Back on the Block, which spawned one of the last hits in Jones’ hit-filled...

When Anthony Hamilton, one of the last mainstream singers working in the southern soul tradition, releases his eighth studio album in 2021, it will mark the first time that the 49-year-old R&b veteran owns the rights to his music. “We’ve thought about this day since 2005,” says Eli Davis, Hamilton’s longtime manager. “You’re no longer a ‘slave’ to a system.”
Hamilton, whose tender, tortured “Back Together (Quiet Storm Mix)” is currently climbing at radio, is part of a growing number of R&b acts cutting ties with major labels.

I'd like to thank everyone for the overwhelmingly positive response to my little rant and offer my apologies to Canadians; I've been to your country many times and everyone I've met has been unfailingly lovely and the maple syrup really is that good. It did feel good to get some of those frustrations off my chest, but now everything is back to normal, where I just insult bad television. At least for the time being. Here's Wednesday night's TV:

Meanwhile, Gomez will compete against Lil Jj, Keke Palmer, Willow Smith and Tyler James Williams in taking home Young Stars Award.
Additionally, Bet nominations, which was announced on Tuesday, May 18, were led by rapper Jay-z, who received five nods, including Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, Best Collaboration for "Empire State of Mind" and Video of the Year for "Empire State of Mind...

The Brooklyn Mc scored nods in the Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, Best Collaboration ("Empire State of Mind"), Video of the Year ("Empire State of Mind" and "Run this Town") and Viewer's Choice categories to lead the way with five nominations, it was announced Tuesday (May 18).
Teen heart throb Justin Bieber picked up a surprise nomination for Best New Artist, his only recognition. "That was not a joke," Bet executive Stephen Hill said, laughing in response to the singer's nod.

Raheem DeVaughn has never had a chart-topping single or a smash in the clubs. Despite his commercial shortcomings, DeVaughn has been a bit of a critical darling and a favorite among neo-soul fans. With the release of his third album, The Love & War MasterPeace, earlier this month, the Grammy-nominated DeVaughn said that he's just thankful for the chance to release the project.
"A lot of artists don't get the opportunity to even [do] that these days. So I'm thankful for that. I'm thankful for the feedback that's coming back in the streets. It's all humbling — a humble journey to take," DeVaughn said.

After blocked from the top spot for three weeks in a row, Lady Antebellum finally re-claim the No. 1 position which was previously held by Sade. The country music trio's album "Need You Now" shifts 126,000 copies and it's enough to force the British band's comeback record "Soldier of Love", which can only add another 79,000 units, to fall to the second position.
The highest chart debut of this week on the Billboard Hot 200 is Blake Shelton. The country music singer rounds up the Top 3 with his latest studio installment titled "Hillbilly Bone" which pulls in 71,000 copies in its first week on sale.
Danny Gokey who finished at the fourth place on "American Idol" season 8 secures the next spot. While his Idol pal Kris Allen's self-titled effort could only bow at No. 11 with 80,000 in November last year, Danny enters at No. 4 despite the fact that his debut album "My Best Days" sells only 65,000 copies.

Fire Starter: Trife Diesel
Better known by fans of Ghostface Killah's Theodore Unit as Trife Da God, Trife Diesel is finally getting his own thing off with the just-released Better Late Than Never.
"My brother Ghost is on there, my brother [Shawn] Wigz is on there," Trife told us earlier this week. "It's a nice classical album. It's not a mainstream album, but it's more me, Trife Da God."
"My brother put me on to Trife," Ghost said of how the two crossed paths. "This little dude, he had an ill swag, he was clean-cut. He was ahead of his time, up to date, and his darts were clean. His darts were illmatic. I sent him down to Florida with me when we was doing Bulletproof Wallets. Ever since Wallets, he's been on tour with me.

Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables
Mixtape: The Wizard Is Coming
Headliner: Ghostface Killah
Co-Starring: J-Love, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Raheem DeVaughn and others.
Key Collaborations: Basically the entire mixtape.
Essential Info: "What a joy we made from the love we made." The record is the first official offering from the September release The Wizard Of Poetry. (Obviously you can tell by the title of the mixtape that it's to promote said album.) J-Love assembles over 20 Ghost R&B collaborations, such as "Summertime" with Beyoncé, the "Chosen One" remix with Jaheim and the remix to Faith Evans' "Again." Our big beef with the...

Lenny Santiago has a rich history in the rap game.
