Update: We are getting a flood of phone calls tonight that Netflix’s B-roll filming of limited series The Perfect Couple in Nantucket was significantly disrupted by local SAG-AFTRA pickets.
We just heard from several local SAG-AFTRA actors and a local strike Captain in Nantucket there that when they learned of the production resuming shooting via permits –even without the series’ major cast– they smelled something fishy and headed to the Massachusetts island. Essentially, the word was out that the production was looking for people who were just driving cars. That’s a union actor’s job being taken away. “They’re messing with our money,” one Massachusetts actor tells Deadline tonight. Again, none of the major cast showed up to filming today.
It is unclear if Kidman and producers were aware of this B-roll shoot. Kidman was recently part of the group of celebrities who each donated $1M or...

Updated: The network upfronts are once again front-and-center for the television industry as major players gather in New York May 15-17 for the springtime ritual of presenting programming plans for the upcoming TV season.
Upfronts are always a hectic time, but this year it’s even more so because of the writers strike that began May 2. Writers and many actors are sitting out the upfront presentations in solidarity with the Writers Guild of America. The promise of WGA pickets surrounding all major events spurred Netflix to make a hasty decision to switch to a virtual presentation rather than an in-person event at the company’s Paris Theater.
As content chiefs outline their plans for the 2022-2023 television season, here is a running list of new drama and comedy series orders handed out by ABC, Disney, CBS, Warner Bros. Discovery, NBC, Fox, the CW and other major players in the upfront.

Fox’s first-year series Monarch is finished.
The network canceled the family drama set in the world of country music after a single season. The show’s season — now series — finale aired Tuesday night.
Monarch had initially been slated to premiere in January 2022 with the NFL’s NFC championship game as its lead-in. A few weeks before its debut, however, Fox pulled the show from that spot and moved it to the fall, citing pandemic-related concerns that production might be interrupted.
It premiered following an NFL telecast Sept. 11 and pulled in decent ratings but was unable to keep that audience once it moved to its regular time period on Tuesday nights. Monarch was designed to have a shorter run than shows like 911 or its lead-in The Resident, but it was also Fox’s first fully owned scripted series since the network split...

“Monarch,” the country music drama starring Susan Sarandon and Trace Adkins, has been canceled after one season on Fox, IndieWire has confirmed.
The show will not return for a second season and will end after Tuesday night’s season – now series – finale.
“Monarch” aimed to be a soapy character drama in the vein of “Nashville” about The Romans, billed as the first family of country music who have built a recording dynasty across generations. But when their dynasty’s reign is put in jeopardy, the family’s matriarch Nicolette Roman (Anna Friel) stops at nothing to restore their family’s legacy.
And though the season premiere was Fox’s most-watched scripted series debut in three years, seen by 3.8 million viewers with a 0.8 score in the key demo, its remaining 10 episodes struggled and averaged far below that initial high mark. The premiere got a big bump following an NFL double header...

Grimsburg has been picked up for a second season at Fox ahead of its premiere.
It is the latest animated series to be renewed before audiences get a chance to see the show.
Grimsburg, which stars Jon Hamm as a misanthropic detective, will launch in 2023.
It comes from newcomers Catlan McClelland and Matthew Schlissel. The news was announced by Fox’s Michael Thorn at Mipcom during a panel session.
Thorn said Grimsburg was an example of its commitment to animation.
The series follows Marvin Flute (Hamm), who might be the greatest detective ever to catch a cannibal clown or correctly identify a mid-century modern armoire. But there’s one mystery he still can’t crack: his family. “’Grimsburg’ is yet another clear example of our strong commitment to, and intense focus on, upholding the high bar of standards any show must exceed in order to reside under the Animation Domination banner,” Thorn said. “Of course, having Jon Hamm’s talent and star power front and center is a great place to start. Equally important, everything we’re seeing with ‘Grimsburg’ – from the very first scripts and show bible to animatics and preliminary cuts – makes us believe we have a winner on our hands that beautifully complements our animation brand.”

Fox has unveiled its programming lineup for the 2022-2023 season but refrained from revealing a fall schedule hours ahead of its upfront presentation.
The lack of a concrete fall schedule for Fox comes as two of the network’s main drama series — “9-1-1” and “The Resident” — have yet to receive formal renewals for next season. Both shows are still top performers for Fox and announcements for both series are expected soon. Whether or not that will happen before Fox’s pitch to advertisers, however, remains to be seen. Per Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier, the broadcaster remains in “good faith negotiations” with 20th Television, which produces both shows.
Fox’s fall schedule is to be announced at a later date. Per Collier, the network had previously decided to take a “portfolio approach” to pitching their slate to advertisers this year.

Fox Breaks With Tradition & Does Not Announce Fall Schedule On Day Of Upfront, Unveils 2022-23 Slate
Fox this morning announced the bulk of its programming slate for the 2022-23 but not a fall schedule. As Deadline reported two weeks ago, the network had been planning not to unveil a grid in conjunction with its May 16 upfront presentation.
As broadcast networks have become a small part of media congloms’ portfolio pitch to advertisers, the fall schedules are no longer a centerpiece of their presentations and are sometimes omitted from the corporate upfronts altogether. But the broadcast networks still traditionally unveil their fall schedule the morning of their upfront presentation.
Fox will announce its fall 2022-23 lineup to advertisers and the media soon, the network confirmed during an upfront press call Monday morning. The decision was made long before Fox could not close renewal deals for its top scripted series 9-1-1 and fellow drama stalwart The Resident in time for its upfront, which would’ve created gaping holes on the fall grid.

Monarch, the country music family dynasty series starring Susan Sarandon, Trace Adkins, Anna Friel and Beth Ditto, has become the latest victim of Covid-19.
Fox has pushed back the launch of the series from January to fall, citing the rising spread of the virus. The series was set to premiere on Sunday January 30.
The network called the series, which is its first fully-owned drama, a “top priority” but was forced in to the move as a result of the impact of the pandemic on production.
Fox is hoping that by shifting the show to fall of its 2022/23 season, it will benefit from having the entire first season produced and more time to market the drama.
It is one of the most significant scalps of the rising spread of the Omicron variant. A number of broadcast shows from NCIS to Chicago Fire and late-night shows such as The Late Late Show...

Fox’s upcoming country music drama “Monarch” will no longer debut at midseason as originally planned.
The series, which boasts Susan Sarandon and Trace Adkins among its cast, was originally meant to premiere on Sunday, Jan. 30, immediately after the NFC Championship game on Fox. It would then shift to Tuesday nights beginning Feb. 1 for the remainder of its first season. Instead, the show will now debut as part of broadcaster’s the fall 2022 schedule. Replacement programming for the Jan. 30 and subsequent Tuesday timeslots are expected to be announced in the coming days.

The Goonies-inspired drama that was previously set up at Fox has moved to Disney+.
The streamer is now redeveloping the project, which the broadcast network passed on in May.
Untitled Film Re-Enactment Project, which is now known as Our Time, comes from The Bold Type creator Sarah Watson and the Gail Berman-run SideCar, Steven Spielberg’s Amblin, and studio Warner Bros.

“The Goonies’ never say die” is a memorable catchphrase from that fan favorite 1980s film. But it could also describe Warner Bros. TV’s recent strategic efforts to keep some of its series alive through crafty dealmaking.
And that, coincidentally, includes “The Goonies”-inspired “Untitled Film Re-Enactment Project” that had been adapted by writer Sarah Watson into a pilot for Fox. The drama, about a teacher who helps her students re-create, shot-for-shot, the original movie, eventually was passed on by Fox, which felt it skewed too young for the network. But Variety can exclusively report that the series, which now has the title “Our Time,” is being redeveloped at Disney Plus. The Donner Company and Amblin, which were behind the original, are back on board.

Exclusive: Fox’s Monarch is getting a new boss after former Designated Survivor showrunner Jon Feldman took over the reins of the musical drama series.
Feldman has been named showrunner of the country music series, replacing Michael Rauch.
The series, which stars Susan Sarandon, Trace Adkins and Anna Friel, is set to premiere on Sunday, January 30 at 10 p.m. Currently in production, Feldman will now oversee the series, which was created by Melissa London Hilfers.
Deadline understands that given the size of the show – it is a sprawling musical family epic – there were some speed bumps hit during filming and Fox, which owns the series as its first live-action series fully since the sale of 20th Television to Disney, felt it needed to pivot. We hear that production was briefly halted as Harmon Feldman took over the position.

Fox’s upcoming musical drama Monarch will get some Tony-winning talent, as Broadway’s Faith Prince has been set to join the cast in a major recurring role. She will appear opposite stars Susan Sarandon, Anna Friel, Trace Adkins and Beth Ditto.
Created by Melissa London Hilfers, Monarch is described as a Texas-sized, multigenerational musical drama about America’s first family of country music, the Romans. The Romans are headed by the insanely talented, but tough as nails Queen of Country Music Dottie Cantrell Roman (Sarandon). Along with her beloved husband Albie (Adkins), Dottie has created a country music dynasty. But even though the Roman name is synonymous with authenticity, the very foundation of their success is a lie. And when their reign as country royalty is put in jeopardy, heir to the crown Nicolette “Nicky” Roman (Friel) will stop at nothing to protect her family’s legacy, while ensuring her own quest for stardom.
