The chances of having your short film selected for Sundance Film Festival’s Short Film program is 0.004 percent – which means the lucky 53 short film selections from over 12,000 short film submissions will truly have the new (or added) opportunity to shine. Among the names that stick out, we find Palme d’Or winner Flóra Anna Buda (“27”), Calvin Lee Reeder’s The Procedure producer Carlos A.F. Lopez‘s “Dream Creep” and Malia Ann (daughter of the former U.S president) who was selected for TIFF back in September and will now head over for a Park City premiere to “The Heart.”…...

Back in June of this year we were happy to report that Calvin Lee Reeder dusted off the cobwebs and got back into feature filmmaking with the announcement that he had gone into production with The A-Frame. So while they’d have to work overtime to deliver a final cut ready for January we’ve seen mad dashes like this before. A fave of Sundance, Reeder’s 2013 drifter drama The Rambler (read review) premiered in Park City and then landed at SXSW, and we could see the same strategic set up here with what falls into the sci-fi realm (and we’d wager a bit of dry humor).…...

It’ll be a full decade between features (he was nonetheless busy directing tons of shorts including under 5-minute masterpiece “The Procedure” (a 2016 Sundance Film Fest selection), Calvin Lee Reeder (2013’s The Rambler) is set to return to the feature film directors chair with the futuristic set The A-Frame. Production is set to begin this month with a cast comprised of Johnny Whitworth, Nik Dodani and Dana Namerode. Part of the producing team we find Cole Payne, Angelia Adzic, Vincent Grashaw (What Josiah Saw), Ran Namerode and Craig Zobel (The Hunt). Here’s the synopsis:

“Like an Abel Ferrara Jr., [Calvin Lee] Reeder meshes thought and design with genre storylines, like a Euro-filmmaker making ’70s drive-in films,” wrote Mike Plante in his 2007 25 New Face profile of the Portland, Ore.-born filmmaker. Sixteen-years later, the alt-horror auteur is still moving between the border spaces of various horror and science-fiction sub-genres, with his newest work — the SXSW-premiering independent TV pilot Harbor Island — being one of the most existentially offbeat yet. David Cronenberg plays the hits in “Crimes of the Future” (Neon), but there’s no other filmmaker today with hits like his. Viggo Mortensen and Léa Seydoux are a pair of surgery-based performance artists whose interests intersect with a sect of plastic-eaters, while bureaucrats Kristen Stewart (giving the screen’s most divisive performance since Jared Leto in “House of Gucci”) and Don McKellar look on in fannish amazement. If you enjoy the auteur’s brand of surgical implements that look like insect exoskeletons and furniture that looks like tumors, this is your kind of movie.

It’s October, which means deliciously dark Halloween-themed programming is heading every TV channel and streaming platform. For Hulu, that means major premieres of festival hits like “Little Monsters,” starring Lupita Nyong’o and “Wounds,” featuring Armie Hammer, Dakota Johnson, and Zazie Beetz. The streamer is also premiering thrilling fare from its Originals slate, including new seasons of its popular series “Castle Rock,” “Light as a Feather,” and “Into the Dark,” and will also highlight Halloween episodes from its immense catalog of TV sitcoms throughout the month. Most important for indie filmmakers, however, it Hulu’s annual Halloween film contest, known as the Huluween Film Fest.
For the second year, Hulu is releasing seven new horror shorts from up-and-coming indie filmmakers exclusively on its site. Collaboratively curated with the Sundance Institute, the short films include new work from Jennifer Reeder, Calvin Reeder, Chelsea Lupkin, Joshua Erkman, Meredith Alloway, Elaine Mongeon,...

Already a long history with the fest, Calvin Reeder has premiered his features at the fest in The Oregonian (Sundance ’11) and The Rambler (Sundance ’13), and loaded up his shorts there as well in Little Farm (Sundance ’07), The Rambler (Sundance ’08) and his last project which birthed a sequel. Sight unseen, we already feel bad for what Christian Palmer’s character might endure and we feel good about the 180 seconds of bliss. A Kickstarter funded project, shooting took place this fall.

After experimenting with his form of boundary-pushing, cinema-as-memory films to great, succesful lengths with his last three narrative features–not to mention Voyage of Time, which we’re still awaiting an actual U.S. release for–Terrence Malick will return to more of a traditional script with his WWII drama Radegund, hopefully releasing later this year. But first, after splicing in avant-garde and experiential touches with his last few films, he’s making the natural step into virtual reality.
Premiering at South by Southwest Festival–where he gave a rare public talk last year–on March 13 is the Vr experience Together, which is directed by Malick and shot by cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (Silence, The Wolf of Wall Street, Brokeback Mountain). Clocking in at 5 minutes and 46 seconds and featuring music by Simon Franglen, see the synopsis below, as well as the first look above.

Sundance Grand Jury Winner ‘The Procedure’ Is A Nsfw Short Film That Will Leave You Appalled — Watch
Calvin Reeder’s short film “The Procedure” runs under four minutes, but chances are it will stay with you for the rest of your life. That sounds like hyperbole, but we can comfortably say we’ve never seen something quite like it before. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and was awarded the Short Film Jury Award for U.S Fiction.

The only thing that might shock you more than the plot is the fact that Sundance awarded a film like this in the first place, but the mastery of its execution, editing and control of tension can’t be denied. The short just debuted on Vimeo in full and has been selected as an official Vimeo Staff Pick.
“This isn’t something that comes premeditated, it just clicked,” Reeder told Vimeo about the film.

Last week, we had fun chiming in on how Sundance 2016 might look like with our Sundance predictions list. Our series was exactly one short from the promised 75. We decided to switch things up this year. Our last pick is reserved for what is a next to impossible, needle in the haystack guess at what films might break into the short film sections. Out of the 8000 plus submissions the Sundance Short Film programmers will receive, they’ll end up selecting a little less than a hundred short films. Here are some ideas as to who and what could show up.
The Bulb and The Procedure
No stranger to Park City, Calvin Reeder has supplied the fest with features such as The Oregonian (2011), The Rambler (2013) and could very well bring this Kickstarter pairing to public access television blitz and X-Files love. Production wrapped in August. Actors Linas Phillips and Christian Palmer star.

On the heels of the 39th edition of the Toronto Int. Film Festival (Sept 4-14), Ifp’s Independent Film Week is where a plethora of fiction, non-fiction and new this year, web-based series from the likes of Desiree Akhavan and Calvin Reeder find future coin. Sectioned off as projects at the very beginning of financing to those that are nearing completion, there happens to be tons of Sundance alumni in the names below. Among those that caught our attention we have Medicine for Melancholy‘s Barry Jenkins’ sophomore feature, produced by Bad Milo!‘s Adele Romanski, Moonlight is about “two Miami boys navigate the temptations of the drug trade and their burgeoning sexuality in this triptych drama about black queer youth”. Concussion‘s Stacie Passon digs into the thriller genre with Strange Things Started Happening. Produced by vet Mary Jane Skalski (Mysterious Skin), this is about “a woman who has...

I feel like it was just yesterday that I was talking to Leigh Whannell about Insidious: Chapter 3 at SXSW, when all we knew was that Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne weren’t going to return, but since then the project has received nothing but good news. First it was announced that directorial duties would stay in house with Leigh Whannell, then future Jem and the Holograms star Stefanie Scott joined the cast, and today brings more casting news in the way of a leading man.
Taking to the Twittersphere today, Leigh Whannell himself announced that actor Dermot Mulroney will star in Insidious: Chapter 3, making for a choice that many genre fans should love. While audiences will know Mr. Mulroney from recent films like The Grey and August: Osage County, horror fans should remember films like Stoker and The Rambler. If you want to see Mulroney at his most interesting,...

Mexico City's Cineteca Nacional (the Cinematheque) hosted the final press conference of Feratum 2013, with the festival's director Miguel Angel Marín leading the panel that revealed the second wave of films (the out-of-competition selection) and full details on the visit of José Mojica Marins (Zé do Caixão/Coffin Joe). Feratum 2013 kicks off on October 3 with the screening of Calvin Reeder's The Rambler. As a cool fact, Ulises Guzmán, director of Alucardos, Retrato de un Vampiro and Feratum programmer, presented The Rambler paraphrasing an extract from Chase Whale's Twitch review! "If David Lynch and David Cronenberg teamed up with Werner Herzog early in their careers and made a movie together, it would have been Calvin Reeder's The Rambler." It sure looks like a killer opening film, but perhaps...

Director Adam Wingard has received rave reviews for his R-rated, home invasion horror-comedy You’re Next, which screened at several film festivals over the past couple of years and will be released August 23. But his often gore-drenched creative sensibility — and twisted sense of humor — is not everyone’s cup of Darjeeling. In the spring of 2007, for instance, the then just the 24-year-old Wingard appeared on the premiere episode of Fox TV’s On The Lot, a much-hyped but now little-remembered, Steven Spielberg-produced filmmakers’ competition with the first prize of a million-dollar development deal at Dreamworks. As Wingard recalls, he...

There's nothing wrong with making a movie that deals heavily with surrealism, but if it doesn't have any real plot, point, or larger idea behind it all, what is it we're supposed to glean from it? That's the problem that plagues Calvin Reeder's The Rambler, which is aptly named but beyond that holds nothing of value artistically or as a form of entertainment. It's an idea that isn't really developed in a coherent way and so it just has long passages of nothingness broken up with shots of strange, horror-inspired chaos. Had Reeder spent a little more time crafting a plot around the idea and its "twist", if we can even call it that considering the film all but states what's going on once we meet a particular character, then maybe The Rambler might have something to reward viewers for their patience. As is, it uses up time and gives nothing in return.

The Rambler – A man who knows not where he’s going, or what to expect, yet he blindly follows the road ahead and every adventure it may bring. He doesn’t have a purpose, a care in the world, a destination, or even a good reason for the life he leads, he just, well, he just is. Sounds like a kooky premise for a film, eh? A mysterious man who wanders from city to city, getting in to all sorts of trouble just for the sake of weirdness? Well, yes and no. Yes in the sense that abstract film watchers absolutely have one of the strangest stories I’ve ever witnessed to indulge in, but no in the sense that we never know what the hell is actually going on. I mean, this “Rambler” doesn’t give a shit about his life, why should we?

Judging from the slick production values, the leading name actor, the eye-catching poster art, and the stock horror trailer, one might glean the false impression that The Rambler, Calvin Reeder’s sophomore film, might be a more commercial affair than his micro-budget 16mm debut, The Oregonian. But make no mistake, though The Rambler finds Reeder painting with a larger canvas, the film is just as bold, hallucinatory and unrepentantly experimental as any of his previous work. Based off the 2008 short of the same name, The Rambler follows a taciturn guitar-slinger (Dermot Mulroney, taking the role on from Reeder who played …...

I sadly missed Calvin Reeder’s The Rambler when it played at Sundance this January, but the film is having a theatrical release starting June 7 (at the reRun Theater!) so I will be checking it out very soon. This first trailer for the film certainly has whetted my appetite even more, and confirms just how crazy and out there Reeder’s movie really is.
