This article contains spoilers for Netflix’s Choose or Die
In Netflix’s Choose or Die we meet Kayla, who is struggling in poverty while taking care of her grieving mother. Intrigued by the possibility of winning a cash prize and changing her family’s fate, she unwittingly becomes embroiled in the supernatural world of a cursed retro video game called Curs>R, which forces its players to make distressing choices for others to save their own lives. Ultimately, Kayla manages to beat the game using her coding skills, unlocking the curse’s power for herself.
If you’ve just finished watching the streaming service’s wild horror genre offering, you might have noticed that the ending of the film is a little tantalizing, and it certainly leaves room for the story to continue if enough people are interested in seeing the deadly concept at the heart of the movie explored further.

Role playing games possess a certain escapist thrill, but what happens when fantasy creeps into reality? Today’s popular user-driven experience gets a nostalgic 1980s makeover in “Choose or Die,” the terrifying refrain in a game with extremely high stakes. The pushes the idea of a cursed survival game to sinister ends, creating a world where every choice has cruel — and very real — consequences. Anchored by a scrappy coder heroine named Kayla (Iola Evans), whose tough exterior is armor for a difficult home life, the film offers a fresh take on a smart concept through the eyes of a compelling teenager. More leads like this, please.
“Choose or Die” is a perfect entry point into genre for younger viewers, one that will also satisfy old school diehards even as it takes some pointed (perhaps deserved?) jabs at them.

‘Choose or Die’ Review: A Video Game Kills Without Rhyme or Reason in This Disposable Netflix Horror
Even the smallest feature-length film is a considerable logistical enterprise, so it’s a bit flummoxing how little thought appears to have been put into “Choose or Die.” While there have been worse-crafted, even more routinely formulaic Netflix horror efforts, this one takes the cake for sheer whateverness of barely-there plot, concept, character detailing and so on. If some movies now seem designed to be consumed on phones, this one demands so little attention, for such scant rewards, you could probably watch it while vacuuming or doing yoga without missing anything important.
Not that first-time feature director Toby Meakins or his cast do slipshod work. But their labors are expended on a “viral” curse premise so indifferently defined and developed, the result recalls the archaic term “quota quickie,” which referred to low-budget 1930s British films made by Parliamentary decree just to keep the industry chugging. “Choose or Die” may substitute supernatural deaths for music-hall songs,...

Thom Burgess shares a concept film for his upcomming film project entitled "Ghoster". Check it out!
Thom Burgess has been working for many years to create a film based on his Ghoster concept. Cinelinx has followed his progress for a few years now and we are happy to report a new concept film he created with Toby Meakins as the latest proof of continued progress.
Ghoster has been over 10 years in the making and tells the story of James, who on the cusp of his 21stbirthday, inherits the mantle of ‘Ghoster’ of the British Isles through his recently deceased grandfather. The title refers to the official spiritual bodyguard to the royal throne, diplomats of the UK, and public. In taking the role, James discovers a hidden world where technology boarders on the supernatural and old traditions dictate the flow of new power. He also encounters a conspiracy which will threaten both him,...

I’ve got a really cool-looking teaser trailer for a film concept created by Toby Meakins. This is the same guy who made the fantastic horror short film Breathe, which is currently being developed as a feature film.
Ghoster is another supernatural film project, but this one is being marketed as a more action-oriented thriller that centers on a hunter who is out to destroy demons. The teaser came with the following description:
The world is plagued by vicious Malevolents, evil ghosts that feed on pain, suffering and death. There remains one hope amidst the terror, a 21-year-old dropout who must to fight to claim his extraordinary birthright – Spectral assassin, hunter of the dead… Ghoster.
I’m a huge fan of these kinds of film projects because they’re fun! This seems like a cool concept and I like the little twist that was thrown into the teaser! I’ve...

Toby Meakins has an inventive genre mind, and he deserves a dozen phone calls from Relativity and Alliance and any other production company churning out low-budget, quality horror stories. We featured his short LOT254 last year — wherein an antique becomes a thing of real terror — and now his latest, Breathe, is available online. It’s a seductive short film, perfectly confident that the stage its setting will raise your curiosity enough to keep you around for the hammer blow. Instead of quick cuts and jump scares, this ghost story relies on a beautifully ruinous setting, a dare from a good friend and a gorgeous dead thing. Like most great horror, it features characters who make a trade — they push the limits of their power over something they don’t understand while sacrificing the safety of a dull world. As they push farther, the danger increases. Like gambling without knowing the stakes. What...

Why Watch? Killer sharks, haunted houses and antique auctions. The classic triumvirate of horror stories. Maybe that last one sticks out like a bleeding thumb, but this short from Toby Meakins is a good argument for its inclusion on our list of fears. In it, a collector starts tinkering with a forgotten camera and finds something delightfully pants-wetting inside. Brief but bursting with atmosphere (built both by an eerie score and the constant clock-reminiscent click of a film reel), LOT254 is a “punchline” style horror short that angles up toward a beautiful jump scare without relying on it. Everything snaps into place here — from design to photography to acting — to create a fun nerve-tester that feels like it could be the pre-credit sequence for something much bigger. What Will It Cost? About 3 minutes. A New Short Film Every Weekday...

I've got a fantastically creepy horror short film for you to watch today called "LOT254." It was directed by Toby Meakins, and it tells the story of a collector who repairs a vintage cine camera "unlocking the hidden terror of LOT254." It's really kind of just a tease of what could be a fun horror film. I really liked the style and tone. ...

From my experience, horror films are always the most interesting but least attended films at smaller film festivals as festival audiences seem to be more interested in stories about losing your virginity than werewolves and zombies. However, two venues in Telluride, Colorado hope to serve that small group of dedicated art-house horror fans with three days of horror films from around the world at the 3rd annual Telluride Horror Show.
Below is the list of films scheduled to screen at the Telluride Horror Show, which takes place on October 12, 13, and 14, 2012.
