Italy’s Lucca Comics & Games, which is Europe’s biggest pop-culture and cosplay meet, is back in full post-pandemic swing with a slew of premieres and high-caliber talent set to engage with thousands of fans in the medieval Tuscan town.
The immersive Oct. 28-Nov. 1 event, dedicated to fandom and the whole universe of comics — including movies, TV and music – has been increasingly gaining traction with studios and streamers. So much so that Netflix has chosen Lucca to launch Tim Burton’s “Wednesday” series, starring Jenna Ortega as gothic feminist icon Wednesday Addams. The hotly anticipated show’s first episode will have its European fan screening on Oct. 31 in the Renaissance gem with Burton in tow.
In the series, Wednesday attends Nevermore Academy, where she attempts to master her new psychic abilities and solve a murder mystery connected to the Addams family’s past.

Set in 1845 during The Great Hunger, the film follows a fisherman who takes in a stranger at the behest of a local priest. It stars Dónall Ó Héalai with Dara Devaney, Michael McElhatton and newcomer Saise Ní Chúinn. The film premiered at last year’s Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.
It was produced by Cúán Mac Conghail for Macalla Teoranta with support from Screen Ireland, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, and TG4 as part of the Cine 4 scheme, a new initiative to develop original feature films in the Irish language. Brie Larson brought Elijah Allan-Blitz as her date to the Oscars!
The actress, 30, attended the awards ceremony on Sunday night, when she helped Sigourney Weaver and Gal Gadot introduce the Academy Awards’ first female conductor, Eimear Noone, who went on to conduct a medley of all the best score nominees.
The Captain Marvel star was spotted in the audience later in the night with Allan-Blitz, as they both reacted to Jane Fonda‘s speech as she introduced the best picture nominations, which went to Parasite.

Much has been written about “Joker” composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, the Icelandic cellist who may well walk off with the Oscar Sunday night, making her only the third woman to win an Academy Award for best original score.
But she’s not the only woman who has composed scores for Oscar-nominated films. In fact, five others are in contention in the documentary feature, documentary short subject and animated short categories.
Three of the five nominated films in the doc shorts category were scored by women (and one of the other two has no score): Sasha Gordon for “Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl),” Amanda Jones for “St. Louis Superman” and Laura Karpman for “Walk Run Cha-Cha.”
Music for the documentary feature “For Sama” was composed by London-based Nainita Desai, and Japanese composer Karen Tanaka scored the nominated animated short film “Sister.”

A woman will be conducting at the Oscars for the first time on Sunday, Feb. 9, the Academy announced today.
Irish-born composer-conductor Eímear Noone will conduct excerpts from the five nominated scores. She is the first female to lead the orchestra in the history of the televised awards, the Academy said.
Details beyond that are sketchy, sources indicated. It is not clear whether all five themes will be presented as a medley or separately, or whether the 42-piece Oscar orchestra will be onstage at the Dolby Theatre or in the pit.
Reached this morning in Dublin, Noone tells Variety: “The wonderful producers at the Oscars decided that they would like to finally see a female presence on the podium after all these years.”
She praised Oscar musical director Rickey Minor as “an amazing kindred spirit who endeavors to elevate music and musicians at every possible turn.”
Minor is expected to conduct the rest of the show,...

The fifth annual Hollywood Music in Media Awards were held Tuesday night at The Fonda Theatre in Hollywood. "Birdman" composer Antonio Sanchez walked away with top film honors while "How to Train Your Dragon 2" and "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" also brought home awards. "It’s about time drummers get some love — now we have 'Birdman' and 'Whiplash,'" Sanchez said. "This is shaping up to be our year!" The animated film score prize was handed out for the first time ever and is a nice boost for "Dragon 2's" John Powell, who picked up an Oscar nomination for the first film in the series four years ago. Song prizes went to "Lost Stars" from "Begin Again" (with Gregg Alexander performing for the first time in 15 years) and "Everything is Awesome" from "The Lego Movie." Check out the nominees here and a full list of visual media awards below,...

Somehow over the years the Hollywood Music in Media Awards have escaped me. The event's fifth annual slate of nominees were announced today, and it's a pretty standard assortment of names we've been considering at the forefront of this year's Best Original Score Oscar race, from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to Hans Zimmer to the ubiquitous Alexandre Desplat. The nominees were chosen by an "Hmma advisory board and selection committee," and winners will be voted upon by "music-media industry professionals comprised of select members of the Society of Composers and Lyricists, The Television Academy, the AMPAS Music Branch, Naras, performing rights organizations, film music journalists and music executives," according to the press release. You might raise your eyebrow at something like "Interstellar" being on here when it hasn't been screened for these purposes (or much at all, for that matter). The nominations are also based on hearing music via...

Written by Michael Barryte On June 6, thousands swarmed the Greek Theater in Los Angeles to witness The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses, a celebration of one of gaming's most beloved franchises. The event was hosted by actress Zelda Williams (named after the princess, in fact) and was a delight for fans, showcasing The Ocarina of Time, The Windwaker, Twilight Princess, and A Link to the Past. The orchestra was conducted by Eimear Noone, who also conducted the Zelda 25th Anniversary concert the year prior, with arrangements for the four-movement symphony by music director Chad Seiter. However, once the symphony itself was over the orchestra was far from done as Williams came out multiple times to...

The Hammersmith Apollo has been host to an array of acts over its 79-year life span. Its walls are a myriad of fame with signed pictures from Kylie to Kasabian making up the decor. However this week a very different performance graced the Apollo stage. The magic of one of the most successful video game franchises ever seen descended upon London for the closing night of the Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary Symphony Concert.
The evening was hosted by none other than Robin Williams daughter, Zelda Williams. Yes, her namesake is due to her fathers’ love of the series, or so we are told. After relaying quips about her favourite Ocarina melody, Ms Williams introduced Nintendo legend Eiji Aonuma on stage to drum up the crowd. Having worked on the Zelda series for over 13 years, the crowd hung onto his every word, creating a cacophony whenever the “Z word” left his lips.
