Henry Kissinger, who as national security advisor and secretary of state for Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford became one of the most influential, famous and controversial diplomats of the 20th century, died Wednesday in his home in Connecticut. He was 100.
A consultant to almost every President of the United States since leaving the State Department in 1977, Kissinger was instrumental in the historic opening to China in 1972. He was also a hawk during the Vietnam War, a master strategist in geopolitics and Beltway power, and an architect of Middle East shuttle diplomacy. With a realpolitik legacy that is as complicated as any American statesman, the pragmatic and cynical German-born Kissinger also was a much lauded and criticized recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973 for his role in ending the war in Southeast Asia.

The new Borat movie hasn’t even officially come out yet, but it’s already making major waves in the political world due to a scene in which Rudy Giuliani lays down on a bed in a hotel room and appears to put his hand in his pants after interacting with an actress playing Borat’s daughter. The former New York City Mayor calls the video “a complete fabrication” and notes that he was merely adjusting his microphone, an explanation not everyone is buying.

His paintings made news worldwide, but it turns out that former President George W. Bush has been working on another, highly personal project since leaving the White House: He has quietly completed a biography of his father, former President George H.W. Bush. Crown Publishers told the Associated Press that the book, currently untitled, will be released November 11. In 2010, Crown published the younger Bush's million-selling memoir, Decision Points. "George H.W. Bush is a great servant, statesman, and father," George W. Bush said in a statement issued by Crown. "I loved writing the story of his life, and I hope others enjoy reading it.

"For a decade starting in the late 60s, the Kashmere Stage Band — a funk-infused outfit rooted in a poor, predominantly black neighborhood in northeast Houston — built a reputation as the most formidable high school band in the country." Scott Tobias for NPR: "Under the leadership of Conrad O Johnson Sr, a prodigious musician in his own right (he once played with Count Basie), the band zigged where others zagged, embracing the sounds (and moves) of James Brown and Otis Redding while its peers were mimicking the ossified standards of 40s big bands. In competition — and on recordings — the contrast was clear: The Kashmere Stage Band was lively, exuberant, spontaneous and contemporary, and the also-rans were square nostalgists."
"Three decades after graduation, members reunite to honor their beloved 93-year-old bandleader, teacher and role model," writes Eric Hynes in Time Out New York. "Amid its celebrations of black power, ambitious Afros and fly female trombonists,...

From Mark Twain publishing Grant's memoirs to Nixon's unapologetic account, it's always controversial when a former president picks up a pen. But as Josh Robinson writes, few have stood the test of time.
Sitting at the Tehran Conference in 1943, as the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union shored up their alliance, Winston Churchill already had plans to set down his wartime memoirs, once the whole grisly business was done. So it was with great confidence that he turned to Josef Stalin and Franklin Roosevelt with a promise. "History will judge us kindly," he said in his growling baritone, "because I shall write the history."

An Information Hound: Mullen grabs a few minutes to read the newspaper in his Pentagon office. | Photo: Olaf Blecker
Admiral Mike Mullen says the sea was his business. Now, as America's top military officer, he's reshaping strategy for a world in which economics and security are intertwined.
On the evening of January 6, Admiral Mike Mullen got into his armored SUV and girded himself for the last meeting of his day. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff had been up since well before dawn -- he'd gone to the gym at 4:30 that morning. A bad cold was making him feel as if his head were stuffed with gauze. And his aides? Slave drivers! He'd wanted to cancel his appearance on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, but he had done that once before, and they thought it would be bad form to back out again.

This looks mighty interesting to me. There’ve certainly been several features on George W Bush and his administration during his 8 years in office as President of these United States; however, I can’t recall seeing, nor hearing about any that focused solely on his Secretary of State – Condoleezza Rice, the first black woman to hold that position, and only the second woman ever!
Men like Dick Cheney and Karl Rove (Bush’s brain) usually are credited as the men behind the curtain, who pulled Bush’s strings, and who actually made the decisions. However, as this documentary seems to suggest, it was Condi Rice who wielded much of the power, and who Bush listened to, becoming a friend and his closest confidante.
A picture has been painted, as the title suggests, of an extremely driven, frigid, power-hungry woman, who essentially sold her soul to the devil, putting advancement over principle,...
