- US National Security Advisor from November 3, 1975 to January 20, 1977 under President Gerald Ford and January 20, 1989 to 1993 under President George Bush, the only person to serve as National Security Advisor under two different presidents. Also served as Deputy National Security Advisor under President Richard Nixon and President Ford beginning in 1973 through his promotion to National Security Advisor by President Ford in November 1975.
- Was a close personal friend of President George Bush (Bush 41), but publicly opposed the Iraq war started after the 9/11 World Trade Center attack by the administration of President George W. Bush (Bush 43), which caused some irritation for Bush 43, without ever effecting his friendship with Bush 41 or the Bush family overall.
- Survived by daughter Karen Scowcroft, and granddaughter Meghan.
- Advised eight presidents, including every president from Nixon to Obama, both Republicans and Democrats.
- Was very influential in the formulation of the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty II between the U.S. and the Soviet Union in 1979, during the Presidency of .Jimmy Carter.
- Graduated from the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point in 1947.
- Received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from George Bush in 1991, during his second tenure as National Security Advisor after almost 50 years in U.S. military and government public service, eventually serving the United States for over 60 years, from military service beginning during the administration of President Harry S. Truman to Special Assistant to the Director of the Joints Chiefs of Staff during the administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson. government service as military aide and advisor to the Richard Nixon White House, serving on boards and commissions for every president from Gerald Ford to Barack Obama.
- Was an instructor at both USMA West Point and USAF Academy in Colorado Springs, including as a professor of political science.
- Publicly endorsed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, calling her "uniquely qualified" to be president.
- Doctorate in international relations from Columbia University.
- Received an honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in 1993.
- Some of his active duty military decorations and awards included the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster and the Air Force Commendation Medal, all before his Air Force retirement in 1975.
