Last year, Dave Lombardo joined Testament, replacing fellow legendary thrash drummer Gene Hoglan. This year, Lombardo will not be touring with the veteran metal act, citing his commitments with his other bands.
Lombardo is, of course, the founding drummer of Slayer, but these days he’s manning the kit for multiple acts, including the Original Misfits, Mr. Bungle, Dead Cross, Suicidal Tendencies, Empire State Bastard, and Satanic Planet. Not to mention, he’s set to release his debut solo album, Rites of Percussion, on May 5th.
In 2022, the drummer’s schedule allowed him to embark on an extensive tour with Testament. In 2023, he has a couple of North American tour legs booked with Mr. Bungle (tickets here), a brief run of summer US shows with the Original Misfits (tickets here), and a few dates with Empire State Bastard (his new band featuring members of Biffy Clyro).

Jim Durkin, the founding guitarist of thrash metal band Dark Angel, has died at the age of 58. The sad news was shared by his wife Annie on Facebook.
“With a broken and heavy heart, I want to share that the love of my life, my best friend and husband, Jimmy, passed away Wednesday morning,” wrote Annie. “He was not alone as I was with him along with a few close friends until the end. He will be truly missed and no one can ever replace the love I have for him. May he rest in peace. Ever Thine, Ever Mine, Ever Ours … My Immortal Beloved. I will see you again.”
The band also confirmed Durkin’s passing, writing, “We in the Dark Angel family are deeply saddened and crushed today with the news of our brother and founder Jimmy Durkin passing away Wednesday morning. We would like to thank his...

System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian summons some operatic flare for a cover of Blue Öyster Cult’s campy hard-rock classic “Godzilla” that will appear on the upcoming soundtrack album for Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Throughout the bombastic cut, he commands a melodramatic vibrato in his voice to complement a full orchestra, drumming by both a Japanese taiko group and a chorus of chanting men. The members of Dethklok, from the show Metalocalypse, including Brendon Small and heavy-metal stalwart Gene Hoglan, also contributed to the track.

Adult Swim's splattery, head-banging animated comedy series Metalocalypse closed its fourth season with a cliffhanger... but the story will pick up in truly epic fashion this month with the historic special Metalocalypse: The Doomstar Requiem A Klok Opera. With an original score by series creator/executive producer Brendon Small and The Walking Dead's Emmy-winning composer Bear McCreary, the one-hour special will feature music by the flesh-and-blood incarnation of the band (including Small, legendary drummer Gene Hoglan, and Joe Satriani band members Bryan Beller & Mike Keneally), backed by a fifty-piece orchestra. The show will also include guest performances by Jack Black, Mark Hamill, Malcolm McDowell, and George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher of the band Cannibal Corpse. “This is not like anything we've ever done,” Small announced. “I drew from all of my influences to make this the most unique project I could dream of.” “I had a blast helping Brendon...

Fall definitely has its perks despite the temperature decrease. As the leaves turn colors, more and more bands hit the road to begin their fall tours. This analogy can be applied to the Bay Area thrash kings, Testament, who just announced that current “Dark Roots Of Earth” studio drummer and world-famous percussionist, Gene Hoglan, will be joining them on the road for select dates on their upcoming co-headlining run with Anthrax. Hoglan will team up with Testament from October 28th through November 13th. Testament has some more news for you metal heads. They will again be offering special VIP/Meet and Greet Packs on their tour with Anthrax and Death Angel....

According to Candlelight Records, industrial metallers Fear Factory will be rolling out their seventh studio album Mechanized early next year. If the first single Powershifter is any indication, this release sounds like a return to the band's groundbreaking roots. Flip to the other side and find out more about their apocalyptic new creation... Mechanized also represents the reunion of frontman Burton C. Bell with the original guitarist Dino Cazares – after parting ways nearly six years ago – and also marks the return of Rhys Fulber (Front Line Assembly) on keys. They're joined by bassist Byron Stroud and the masterful Gene Hoglan (Strapping Young Lad) at the drumkit. Bell describes the product of...

In each Fangoria Musick Chopping Block, we'll be taking a look at a trio of recent releases.

Megadeth - Endgame

Back in 1993, Megadeth's Dave Mustaine was the second interview I'd ever conducted. Only 16 at the time and sporting a horrible Iowa-style metalhead mullet, taking a seat next to Dave was a huge deal. One thing that was clear to me even in my youth was that there's two types of metal fans: one's that like Megadeth, and one's that don't. The very traits that draw some listeners into the fold are the same that drive others away. Megadeth is a unique thrash-metal beast.
While the late '90's and early 2000's were not kind to the band (lineup changes,...
