This week brought the premiere of Andy Samberg's new adult animated comedy series "Digman!" to Comedy Central. The series, which Samberg co-created with "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" producer Neil Campbell, follows a formerly great archaeologist named Rip Digman who has since turned into a laughing stock. And in a world where archeologists are considered huge celebrities, that's an unfortunate situation to be in. But with his crew by his side, Digman tries to get back on top, taking whatever scrappy museum job he can to get by, and that results in him meeting quite the impressive ensemble of characters voiced by an amazing array of actors. In fact, one of them is a filmmaker you might be familiar with.
Edgar Wright, the director behind beloved films like "Shaun of the Dead, "Hot Fuzz," and "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," was listed among the guest cast members when "Digman!" was announced to the masses.

When you have an adult animated series that's inspired by the like of Indiana Jones and "National Treasure," it would make sense if classic adventure movies provided a lot of inspiration. When it comes to Andy Samberg and Neil Campbell's new series "Digman!" on Comedy Central, that's certainly the case. But you might be surprised by the hefty helping of sci-fi that's thrown into the mix, and along with that come some unexpected allusions to other classic movies. Even films outside of the adventure and sci-fi arenas couldn't escape the comedic clutches of Rip Digman, a washed up archaeologist living in a world where these adventurers are huge celebrities.
Leading up to the premiere of "Digman!" on Comedy Central this week, we spoke with series co-creators Andy Samberg and Neil Campbell, who revealed some of the surprising classic movies that inspired their absurd adventure antics in the eight episodes...

Ever since launching his career with "Saturday Night Live," Andy Samberg has lent his voice to a variety of projects, from selling sardines as Baby Brent in "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" to hanging out with monsters as Johnny in the "Hotel Transylvania" franchise. But that's family friendly fare. More recently, Samberg has also dabbled in animated roles geared towards adults, such as playing a werewolf version of Benedict Arnold in "America: The Motion Picture." Now, he's starring in his own animated adult comedy series.
"Digman!" premieres on Comedy Central starting on March 22, 2023 (watch the trailer here), with Samberg playing a washed up archaeologist adventurer named Rip Digman. Set in a universe where archaeologists are considered major celebrities, it should come as no surprise that the Digman character takes some cues from Indiana Jones. In fact, he might take even more inspiration from Nicolas Cage's character Benjamin Gates in "National Treasure.

This month, Comedy Central is bringing a new adult animated adventure comedy series to television. "Digman!" stars Andy Samberg as the titular archaeologist, a blend of Nicolas Cage's "National Treasure" character (complete with an eccentric variation of Samberg's trusty Cage impression from "Saturday Night Live") and Indiana Jones. Once a celebrated hero in the world of archaeology, the death of his wife over a decade before and a harsh betrayal by his sidekick has sent Rip Digman into a pathetic spiral. Today, he finds himself aging and out of shape, living an unhappy existence taking little jobs for rinky-dink museums around the world. But adventure is still out there, and so are plenty of laughs.
"Digman!" is co-created by Samberg himself along with "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" writer and producer Neil Campbell, and the two have brought an absurd sense of humor and a surprising dose of sci-fi to the classic adventure formula.

Along with being part of The Lonely Island comedy trio that made "SNL Digital Shorts" a key part of the modern success of "Saturday Night Live" in the 2000s, Andy Samberg also became well-known on the late-night sketch series for doing a spot-on Nicolas Cage impersonation.
As part of a recurring Weekend Update segment called "Get in the Cage with Nicolas Cage," Samberg would portray Cage and sit at the news desk with whoever the "SNL" host was that week, including the likes of Liam Neeson, Jake Gyllenhaal, Bradley Cooper, and even Paul Rudd. Though the segment was described as being about the craft of acting, it would always turn into Cage describing one of the actor's films that would be perfect for Cage to star in, followed by the inevitable question, "How am I not in that movie!?" Adventure has a name, and it's Rip Digman. Andy Samberg stars in the new Comedy Central animated series "Digman!" beginning on March 22 (watch the trailer here). The former "Saturday Night Live" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" star lends his voice to a heroic Indiana Jones-esque archaeologist who was once the best in his field. But following the death of his wife over a decade earlier, not to mention a shocking betrayal by his sidekick, we find Digman washed up, out of shape, and over the hill. Even the national news mocks Digman's shortcomings and fall from grace. Yes, in this world, the news is always reporting on archaeologists as if they're celebrities or superheroes, and they're always taking cheap shots at Digman.

Everyone's favorite globe-trotting, brown jacket-wearing, and ethically dubious archaeologist is returning to the spotlight. That's right: 12 years after being fired by the Smithsonian, Rip Digman is coming out of retirement and eager to prove he's still got what it takes to be a world-class "Archie." To quote the man, the myth, the legend himself in the newly-unveiled "Digman!" trailer, "The only dating I'm interested in ... is carbon dating."

Amy Poehler is great. This is a fact that we're constantly reminded of when she does basically anything, from talking about her kid's lisp to throwing a charity Emmy losers party with Jon Hamm. "But what about freestyle rapping?" you ask. Amy's great at that also – well, kind of. This week she appeared on the "Comedy Bang! Bang!" podcast and, as she has two other times (1 and 2), engaged in a good old-fashioned rap battle. The topic was butter, which we all know is a classic rap battle topic. Just so you know what you're listening to: First goes host Scott Aukerman, followed by Paul F. Tompkins as Alan Thicke (TV star, TV theme song writer, Robin Thicke's dad), then Amy, then Neil Campbell (head writer for the Comedy Bang! Bang! TV show). Amy goes on at about 4:45. It's all pretty great and pretty terrible.
