Universal Pictures Content Group has acquired international rights to Elon Musk documentary “Musk,” directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney.
It was announced during Cannes earlier this year that HBO Documentary Films had come on board to join the production and will release the film in North America.
Gibney directed “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley,” the Oscar-nominated “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room” and Oscar winner “Taxi to the Dark Side.”
Helen Parker, exec VP, Universal Pictures Content Group, said: “We instantly wanted to attach to this feature as we are big fans of Alex’s previous work and feel confident that he will deliver an insightful portrayal of one of the centuries most provocative characters.”
The film is produced by Jigsaw Productions and jointly financed and produced by Closer Media, Anonymous Content via their recently launched sales and finance division AC Independent, and Double Agent.

Exclusive: Universal Pictures Content Group has acquired international rights to Alex Gibney’s latest documentary Musk, about the lightning-rod entrepreneur and businessman.
Negotiations first began in Cannes with Black Bear International and the multimillion-dollar pact is among the biggest ever for a documentary out of the Cannes Market.
In another lucrative presale we revealed in the spring, HBO Documentary Films pre-bought North American streaming and TV rights to the project. A domestic theatrical release remains in play.
Taxi to the Dark Side Oscar winner and Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room nominee Gibney has been working on the project for months. It recently was described by the producers as “a definitive and unvarnished examination” of the provocative X (formerly Twitter) owner.

Musk, Alex Gibney’s doc about the tech giant Elon Musk, has landed at HBO Documentary Films in North America.
Musk has been described as a “definitive and unvarnished examination” of the controversial and headline-making CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and Twitter. (When the doc was first announced, in characteristic fashion, Musk made a comment on Twitter, writing, “It’s a hit piece.”) Gibney, who earned an Oscar for the 2008 film Taxi to the Dark Side, is no stranger to controversial figures, having produced docs on Scientology, Wikileaks and Enron.
Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions produced the film alongside Closer Media, Anonymous Content and Double Agent, which is also financed the project.
HBO and Gibney have a long working relationship, which includes films about the opioid crisis The Crime of the Century, Elisabeth Homes doc The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley and Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief.

Alex Gibney, the Emmy- and Academy Award-nominated documentary filmmaker behind “Taxi to the Dark Side,” “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room” and “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley,” will next set his sights on Elon Musk with “Musk,” described in the official announcement as “a definitive and unvarnished examination of multi-billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and Twitter.”

A documentary about the rehab center turned cult Synanon is in production at HBO Documentary Films, Variety has learned exclusively.
Spanning more than three decades until the early 1990s, Synanon originated as a Santa Monica-based storefront rehab and was celebrated both as a breakthrough treatment center and a culturally forward attempt at communal living. Led by the charismatic Chuck Dederich and his wife Betty, Synanon was a darling of the recovery community as well as the political and celebrity elite. But the organization began to transform over time, first becoming a church and later engaging in cult-like activity and extreme behavior that culminated in an attempted murder charge and the dissolution of the enterprise.
The untitled documentary will include first-person accounts from members and critics who experienced the events, and will feature never-before-seen archival material that chronicles the organization’s high-minded aspirations as well as its explosive end.

The company is making a big splash this month. Three of its next feature documentaries — “On the Line: The Richard Williams Story,” “Subject” and “Rudy! A Documusical” — are set to world premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, which kicks off on Wednesday.

Larry Harvey, one of the founders of the Burning Man festival, died in San Francisco on April 4 after suffering from a stroke. He was 70.
The official Burning Man website announced the death of Harvey. “We resolutely held out for a miracle,” a statement on the website said in regards to his stroke. “If there was anyone tenacious, strong-willed and stubborn enough to come back from this challenge, it was Larry.”
The statement continues, “Larry would be the first to say this isn’t an ending, but the start of a new chapter, and we all have a hand in where we go from here.”
A San Francisco native and known as “The Man in the Hat,” Harvey was an artist, philanthropist and activist. In 1986, he started Burning Man with his friend Jerry James. The festival started off small and was a summer solstice evening ritual where they would burn their...

Title: Spark: A Burning Man Story Directors: Steve Brown, Jessie Deeter Burning Man, an annual week-long event held in the Black Rock Desert of northern Nevada, would seem to be a great subject for a documentary. After all, the festival — which was originally envisioned as a utopian getaway and rebuke to the constrictive nature of modern life’s duties and norms — now draws in more than 50,000 participants, nominally known as “Burners,” each year. It’s become a pop culture touchstone in and of itself, in the process spawning more than 50 regional festivals around the globe — all based on the same 10 operating principles, which include radical inclusion, [ Read More ]

Spark: A Burning Man Story
Directed by Steve Brown and Jessie Deeter
USA, 2013
Spark: A Burning Man Story is at its liveliest when its participants are at their most fractious. Perhaps that’s a bit ironic considering that the yearly Burning Man event in Nevada is typified by how the thousands of people who trek from around the world to the middle of the American desert are characterized by their open, free, giving spirits. But this 90-minute documentary is, essentially, something of a feature-length ad for Burning Man—which has now spread to other regional events year-round. Though it might be a fast-paced education for those who are only vaguely aware of the gathering from its use in pop culture as a punchline, Spark: A Burning Man Story is more surface-level than is fitting or ideal.

The annual Burning Man event in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert is a bit of a mystery for those of us who exist outside certain artistic circles, and as such a bevy of assumptions have built up regarding what exactly happens there for a week each year. It’s a given for example that there are drugs, sex parties, and s’mores, and it’s a known fact that the event’s final night sees a bee-filled cage placed over an outsider’s head before the unlucky soul is locked in a giant, wooden figure and burned alive. But what else is Burning Man about? Steve Brown and Jessie Deeter set out to answer that question with the new doc Spark: A Burning Man Story, and while it conveniently neglects to comment on the bees it does offer an insight into the event’s history and what it takes to organize a gathering with nearly 60,000 visitors. That...

We open with a static shot of a shimmering desert, reminiscent of the intro to High Plains Drifter. Instead of Clint Eastwood's vengeful ghost, something resembling a Subaru Outback emerges. It's as fitting a contrast between that film and Spark: A Burning Man Story as you're likely to get. The setting is Nevada's Black Rock Desert, site of what one event founder describes as an exercise in "radical collective codependency." Charting Burning Man's course from its origins on a San Francisco beach in 1986 to the massive affair currently boasting nearly 60,000 attendees, producer-directors Steve Brown and Jessie Deeter utilize broad access to the event's six founders to offer impressive insight into 27 years of Bm history. They also follow the progress of two artists attendi...

The annual week-long event takes place in the Black Rock Desert, and doesn't just focus on music, but a variety of artistic disciplines, with like-minded souls traveling from around the world to gather and celebrate in a community unlike any other. And now, a documentary is offering a peek at the work it takes to make it happen each year. Directed by Steve Brown and Jessie Deeter, "Spark: A Burning Man Story" spends time with both the organizers and participants to help create a portrait of the individuals that make the festival happen. With 60,000 tickets that often sell out in under two hours, the allure of Burning Man is indisputable.
But as anyone who follows the festival knows, the playa is not without its controversies. From entry crises to safety concerns to serious questions about law enforcement, Burning Man faces a constant struggle between regulation and the event's free spirited mission.
In their new documentary, "Spark: A Burning Man Story," filmmakers Steve Brown and Jessie Deeter go behind the scenes to explore the inspiration, controversy and gravitational appeal of one of the world's most famous festivals.
The film will celebrate its world premiere next month at Austin's film, music and technology conference, South by Southwest.
"It's a dream come true to be back at SXSW with Spark," said Brown in a press release. "[Burning man founder] Larry Harvey once described his mission in leading Burning Man as creating a place that would give people permission to act on their dreams.

South by Southwest (SXSW) is just one of many film festivals, we here at Sound On Sight cover yearly. The fest, which takes place every spring in Austin, Texas, began in 1987, and has continued to grow in size every year. The fest announced the first wave of films back in early January, and the lineup included some highly anticipated films such as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Evil Dead, Downloaded and Spring Breakers. Now the full lineup has been announced, and it just might be one of the best lineups the festival has ever programmed.
SXSW takes place March 8-16 in Austin Texas. Here are just some of the films we are excited about.
