Update, 2:23 Pm Pt: Jury deliberations are beginning in the Derek Chauvin trial after a day-long series of closing arguments as to whether the former Minneapolis police officer is guilty of murder in the death of George Floyd.
With the jury out of the room, Judge Peter A. Cahill denied a defense motion for a mistrial based on remarks made by Rep. Maxine Waters (D-ca). But the judge did say that it could form a basis for an appeal.
“I will give you that Congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trial being overturned,” he said.
Waters told reporters on Saturday that she hoped that for a verdict of “guilty, guilty, guilty, and if we don’t, we cannot go away.” Asked what protesters should do, she said, “We have got to stay on the street. We have got to get more active.

Ted Koppel hasn’t anchored ABC’s “Nightline” since 2005. Yet he’s had a new influence on the late-night news program since last week.
“Nightline” has, at least for now, returned to the format that brought it critical renown and TV fame. Since last Monday, the show has spent its regular late-night half hour delving into the world’s coronavirus crisis. And, starting tomorrow night, it will for a time return to its original perch, airing right after late local news, just like Koppel did. Repeats of late-night mainstay “Jimmy Kimmel Live” will start after midnight.
“We are just leaning more heavily into our roots,” says Byron Pitts, who co-anchors the program with Juju Chang.
On one recent night’s broadcast, ABC News foreign correspondent James Longman offered viewers a you-are-there look at his efforts to get out of Italy before the country was locked down, then checked himself in to an Airbnb to recover.

The nation’s biggest news networks are being swept along by the very headlines they’re trying to deliver.
Two of the biggest TV-news operations have had to make noticeable changes to their most important programs and redirect personnel behind the scenes in the earliest days of America’s coronavirus crisis, even as those staffers come under increasing pressure to keep America informed about the latest developments around the contagion.
NBC News took “Today” regulars Al Roker and Craig Melvin off the air Monday, citing the discovery that a staffer who works for the 9 a.m. production of “Today” had developed “mild” symptoms after testing positive for coronavirus. CBS News has detailed at least four employees who have tested positive and had to close much of its New York facilities temporarily, sending “CBS This Morning” for a period of time to broadcast from Washington, D.C. Ted Koppel isn’t returning to “Nightline,” but the programming concept that elevated him and the show to wider renown is making a comeback.
“Nightline” got its start on ABC in 1980 as a late-night news program that spent its full half-hour length analyzing a single topic, based on months of Koppel’s end-of-day coverage of news centered around the Iranian hostage crisis. As people demand more information about the spread of coronavirus, the show will – for the foreseeable future – revisit its roots.
Starting this evening, “Nightline” will devote its entire 30-minute span to coverage of the outbreak of Covid-19, charting its spread around the globe. Dr. Jennifer Ashton, ABC News’ chief medical correspondent, will answer viewer questions and the program will rely on ABC News’ correspondents stationed around the world.

As ABC News prepares to broadcast the third Democratic debate on Thursday, the network is introducing a new twist on campaign coverage.
“Around the Table,” which launched on Tuesday morning on ABC News Live, brings three undecided voters to a dinner table to meet with a Democratic presidential candidate. The voters get to ask the candidate any question in a more personal setting, certainly more informal than in a presidential town hall.
First up was Beto O’Rourke, the former Texas congressman, who along with his wife Amy were joined at their El Paso home by Viviana Rivera, Caleb Morris and Tess Clarke and moderator Byron Pitts. As a dinner of beef, broccoli and baked potatoes was passed around the table, they covered issues like immigration, health care and education.

“Nightline” is no longer being tailored solely for late-night newshounds.
The venerable ABC News show, which has its roots in the network’s end-of-day coverage of the 1979 Iran hostage crisis, is quietly branching out to new venues. On Monday evening, Freeform, the cable network that is, like ABC, part of Walt Disney Co., will show “For Our Lives: Parkland,” a “Nightline” documentary that follows the lives of several students in the aftermath of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Executive producer Steven Baker feels there’s more “Nightline” can do. “’Nightline’ is more than just a time slot,” he says. “This is a brand that tells stories, no matter where it is seen.”
The hour long-special marks the first time “Nightline” and Freeform have partnered on a project. “Nightline” producers were able to embed themselves with some of the Parkland students, and not just at school events or demonstrations.
