The sea has always been a cinematic space rife with possibility; a place of isolation, a liminal space between lands. This is what makes the cargo ship setting of Tom C J Brown’s BIFA nominated animation Christopher at Sea the perfect location for its story of inward reflection and self-discovery. The plot concerns a young man aboard a transatlantic voyage and the chance encounter he has one night with one of the ship’s engineers. It’s a beautifully rendered animation with a delicate, painterly style that depicts the bending reality of Christopher’s perspective in a brilliantly fluid manner. Dn spoke with Brown in the wake of his BIFA nomination to talk over his own personal journey of self-discovery that occurred during the making of the film, the melodramatic realist tone he sought to achieve, and animation’s ability to push your imagination into uncharted territory.

Paris-based Italian director Gianluca Matarrese took a deep dive into the world of fashion for his latest documentary feature, “Fashion Babylon,” which world premieres on Saturday at Cph:dox film festival in Copenhagen. Ahead of the premiere, he spoke to Variety about the film and upcoming projects.
The idea for “Fashion Babylon” came to Matarrese after he met American musician and artist Casey Spooner in a bar in the Marais district of Paris, where the director lives. “He’s quite an extraordinary character, and he knows everyone,” Matarrese says. “He opened up the gates so I could enter this incredible world.”
For Matarrese, the fashion world is like a royal court, ruled by its king, Jean Paul Gaultier, and queen, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who is the one “making the rules,” he says. Matarrese compares this society to that depicted in Elle Fanning series “The Great,” about Russia’s Catherine the Great.

When Faith No More keyboardist Roddy Bottum and his boyfriend Joey Holman visited Oxnard, California, a town 60 miles west of downtown Los Angeles, last year to handle a family matter, they suddenly found themselves isolated due to pandemic lockdown restrictions. So the couple started making music together.
“Roddy was just like, ‘We’re both musicians, let’s just do it to pass time.’ At first, we were just going to share with our friends,” Holman explains. Then, after releasing their first track and video, “Daddy,” under their new Man on Man moniker last May,...

Bono, Pharrell, Michael Stipe and Laurie Anderson are among a host of musicians who have contributed to a new album from French artist Sophie Calle about her dead cat, NPR reports.
The 37-track project is named for the late feline, Souris, which translates to “mouse” in English. Souris Calle is available to stream via Spotify, while it can also be purchased on triple LP vinyl.
Souris Calle opens with a voicemail ode from Bono, who speaks over a rumbling rock groove: “She seems to hide all looks that have ever...

Drew Droege as Chloë Sevigny
Halloween has never made much sense to me. Why is everyone content to spend the holiday prancing around in underwear the size of tissue paper? Are people really spooked by fake ghosts and goblins? What can October 31st offer those of us with a more sensible, refined palette? I was completely befuddled. Then, just two years ago, I stumbled upon Chloë Sevigny's (a.k.a. the fabulous Drew Droege) "Hallowe'en" video and learned that I'm not alone.
If you would rather attend the Grand Re-Opening of the Nissan Sherman Oaks than bear another night at The Abbey, Halloween just isn't going to cut it. Instead, this year celebrate its more sedate and introspective cousin: Hallowe'en.
Still unsure? Check out the video below:
Yes Chloë, I too am afraid of three day weekends with Casey Spooner, Marcia Cross, and Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon. So get ready to...

Built products have always played a supporting role in the lives of creative people. As the Official Bag of the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival, Built had the opportunity to make a short film for the Festival pre-show screenings, and we let the most creative artists, writers, and directors we know give Built its star turn. New Yorkers Casey Spooner, one half of the renowned art pop project Fischerspooner, and Adam Dugas, the mastermind behind numerous NYC stage and film productions, assembled a crew of eclectic downtown performers for an epic 18-hour shoot. With a small budget and zero rules, they created a hilarious - and sometimes head-scratching - short that you can't watch just once. The result is There Is No Tomorrow, an unforgettable two-minute film that embraces the true spirit of the independent film. Here, the two explain the inspiration behind the most unconventional bag ad you'll ever ...

Chloe Sevigny has a well known fear and disregard for talk shows, so any time the actress gives an interview it's cause for celebration. This being Sevigny, however, she is not heading to Letterman or Conan, but rather doing an online segment with artist and Fischerspooner founder Casey Spooner and Adam Dugas for Imagine Fashion. It's for the better though, as we get to hear Chloe rhyme, talk about her upcoming miniseries and watch first hand as she sees La improv star Drew Droege's now famous impression of her. This is so meta!

There are huge spoilers about Glee’s Super Bowl episode in this post concerning Sue Sylvester. But just how big and flashy is the episode? According to Chris Colfer, “It's by far the most expensive episode we've ever done. There was one scene where they were filming and they had two ambulances on standby, which is two more ambulances than they usually have. It's a big one."
Meanwhile, this post about Glee has Darren Criss addressing the future of Blaine and Kurt “We're definitely going to start seeing some layers to the two of them. The pink elephant in the room will finally be addressed, let's put it that way.”
The real Being Human, the one with Russell Tovey, is set to hit the air for its third season in the UK January 23rd. Which may not bode well for those with access to both the original and the American series.

New Moca director Jeffrey Deitch might have just accepted the art world's most controversial position, but if there's one thing everyone can agree he's great at, it's throwing a party. And now, he's got a bright, blank new L.A. canvas to work with. We asked artists, curators and critics to provide some guidance for Deitch's new gig.
Time to pitch a Moca reality show to one of the major networks now that you're in L.A. The concept is your life: "Ack! The economy's gone to shit so now I'm a newbie museum director." During this 13-episode series viewers will watch you navigate museum politics, get lost in L.A. and schmooze with celebrities and art glitterati. Show title: Sink or Swim! The prize: Glory--and the USA's best museum stays open.-Paddy Johnson, Art Fag City
Deitch should expand his plans with James Franco and General Hospital and embrace Los Angeles' soap opera scene.
