Max, the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service, is leaning further into live sports, acquiring the U.S. rights to the mixed martial arts outfit Bellator.
Bellator kicks off on March 22 from Belfast, with eight events set for this year in Paris, Dublin, London, Chicago and San Diego. TNT Sports will also run Bellator content on its new TruTV sports programming block.
Paramount sold Bellator to the Saudi-backed Pfl last year in a deal estimated at around $500 million. The Pfl subsequently inked a multi-year rights deal with ESPN, though the Bellator brand is distinct from the Pfl brand.
“We are thrilled to partner with Professional Fighters League to introduce a new live sport to the U.S. Warner Bros. Discovery content portfolio,” said Josh Walker, Chief Financial & Strategy Officer, Warner Bros. Discovery Streaming. “The addition of Bellator Champions Series offers our viewers an opportunity to experience highly anticipated mixed martial arts,...

Warner Bros. Discovery is getting into the octagon.
The company has acquired the U.S. rights to Bellator, the mixed martial arts (Mma) championship that previously aired on Paramount’s Showtime.
The move comes after the Professional Fighters League (Pfl) acquired Bellator Mma from Paramount Global last year. Shari Redstone’s company had previously bought majority ownership of Bellator in 2011 and aired its tournaments on a number of its networks.
The news is not a surprise to Paramount; Chris McCarthy told employees in October that Showtime would end its boxing and Mma content at the end of 2023 in order to focus on scripted series.
The new Bellator Champion Series will kick off on Friday March 22 on Max. The series includes eight events staged in cities across the globe, featuring world-ranked fighters and two title fights during each event. It begins in Belfast with Corey Anderson taking on Karl Moore, before moving to Paris in May,...

Barbie, Spider-Man, Black Panther – visions of dolls and comic-book characters inevitably will be dancing in the heads of Grammy voters when they sit down to nominate movie music for this year’s golden gramophones.
“Barbie: The Album” seems a shoo-in to compete for best compilation soundtrack, the category for movies dominated by songs. But the Metro Boomin-curated album for the animated “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” also topped Billboard’s soundtrack chart this year and seems likely to swing into competition.
On a similar note, the third edition of “Guardians of the Galaxy” film inspired another “Awesome Mix” that was hugely popular and seems poised to join its two predecessors as a Grammy nominee. The “Fast X” album and Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid,” with its new songs by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda, could also make it onto the ballot.
