Kev Curtis
- Composer
- Music Department
Kev Curtis stumbled upon
music quite by accident around 30 years ago when, out of the blue, he
was suddenly handed a bass guitar with only 3 strings on it and asked
by a fellow school mate to play in the school band after the sudden
departure of the existing bass player. And thus, the musician was born.
He was on the very first intake of students at the newly formed School of Sound Recording based on Tariff Street in Manchester in 1985 whilst living in the notorious Hulme crescents where he cut his teeth on the indie and rock scene in the 80s and early 90s. It was here where he honed his audio engineering craft by recording local bands and jingles for a Moss Side pirate radio station as well as spending thousands of hours writing soundtrack music and experimental compositions.
Three decades later since being handed a 3 string bass, he now has a studio in his home set within the hills of the Rossendale countryside of Lancashire, northwest of the UK. His main areas of expertise are documentaries and drama/documentaries for such global clients as The National Geographic Channel and Discovery Channel, although he has also done extensive work for the BBC and ITV and a myriad of internet and corporate clientèle. Many programmes that he has worked on have either been nominated or have gone on to win BAFTA and RTS awards.
He continues to play bass (a 5 string one, this time) in rock bands as a side project, plus he has just released his debut solo album of trip hop and ambient music, going by the name of Solid State Drive on Dusted Down Records.
