Jewish Story Partners (Jsp), a Los Angeles-based nonprofit film funding organization, has announced its new slate of grants to 19 documentary film projects.
The org, which was launched in April 2021 with support from Kate Capshaw and Steven Spielberg’s Righteous Persons Foundation, will distribute $490,000 among these independent films, all of which explore the vast and vibrant terrain of the Jewish storytelling space. The announcement coincides with Jewish American Heritage Month and a commitment from President Joe Biden’s White House administration to develop a national strategy to counter antisemitism and “address increasing awareness and understanding of both antisemitism and Jewish American heritage.”
Since its inception, Jsp has disbursed $2 million in funding to 72 documentaries telling diverse Jewish stories.
On the heels of previous Jsp-funded films that have premiered at Sundance — including Paula Eiselt’s “Under G-d,” Luke Lorentzen’s “A Still Small Voice” and Ondi Timoner’s Oscar-shortlisted and Emmy contender “Last Flight Home...

This year’s Mill Valley Film Festival marks the much-anticipated return of movies, and audiences, to theaters, but the Northern California event founded in 1977 retains some lingering influences of the pandemic, with both in-person and online viewing options. With the Delta variant raging, the festival’s founder and director Mark Fishkin notes that the logistics for the fest’s hybrid-style return are even more challenging than before.
“This year everything has been changing so rapidly it has caused a lot of sleepless nights,” he says.
But the fest, which runs Oct. 7-17, also features a bevy of screenings and events that stand to make the Bay Area gathering one of its most hotly anticipated. Joe Wright’s “Cyrano” will bow opening night, with Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” closing the fest. Mike Mill’s “C’mon C’mon” is the centerpiece feature film. The fest will also spotlight Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino,...

Apparently “inspired” by the true-life case of Robert Walter Scully, Jr. who killed a police officer in 1995 before taking a family hostage, Supremacy tells the story of Tully (Anderson) a white supremacist who just got paroled. But his first night out could be his last…
After being pulled over, Tully just killed the cop (Ali) and goes on the run. And no one’s going to listen to an ex-con with the Aryan Nation. Tully and his girlfriend (Olivieri) add home invasion and hostages to the body count. But no one counted on Mr. Walker (Glover), an ex-con himself, to fight back—using his understanding of the racist mind to...

Joe Anderson (Across the Universe) and Danny Glover star in Supremacy, a racially charged psychological thriller that Well Go USA has acquired with an eye toward an awards-season run. Pic is directed by Deon Taylor from Eric J. Adams’s script in a departure from his most recent feature, the 2009 horror Chain Letter. I’ve never seen anything quite like My Suicide, and it blew me away. Dark, totally hilarious and an insane mix of shooting techniques, it’s like you took young filmmakers with A.D.D. and then gave them a lot of cool equipment and drugs. Which apparently is the effect that that David Lee Miller was going for. My Suicide is a dark coming of age teen comedy, but told through a breathtaking whirlwind of shooting techniques, fast paced edits and movie/tv homage riffs that left my gob wide open. Not to mentioned a kick ass sound track that includes Radiohead, Brighteyes and Rocky Votolato.
Seventeen year old Archie Williams (Gabriel Sunday) lives in the guest house of his affluent parents,...

A recurring theme in my relationship with movies (which began when I was underage and has often been mutually abusive) is that it doesn't matter if a film has the same basic ideas as a hundred other movies, as long as the filmmakers find new ways to express them. A movie is only generic if it doesn't bring anything new to the table.
That's why I like My Suicide, a bit of nobody-understands-me teen angst directed and co-written by video-game producer David Lee Miller. Its point of view is that of a disaffected 17-year-old movie buff who plans to kill himself on camera, so the talk of teen suicide calls to mind any number of similarly themed films. But My Suicide breaks out of the mold with an exhilarating use of stock footage, animations, reenactments, and other audio-visual tricks, vividly reflecting the thought process of today's media-saturated young people who are under-supervised,...
