AMC has ordered a 10-episode adaptation of “Dietland,” the 2015 novel about weight loss and beauty, from executive producer Marti Noxon (“UnReal,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”).
The novel, written by Sarai Walker and released in 2015, takes place in the beauty industry and mixes character drama and revenge fantasy to explore society’s obsession with weight loss and beauty. Kirkus Reviews called the book “part ‘Fight Club,’ part feminist manifesto, an offbeat and genre-bending novel that aims high.”
Noxon, who will direct the first several episodes of the series, elaborated more about the show on Saturday at AMC’s portion of the Television Critics Association press tour. Noxon said she was concerned at first that she wouldn’t find a home for “Dietland,” which she noted features a “funny and poignant” story that “you can’t quantify.”
But it’s also dark: The main character is morbidly obese, and finds herself being pulled between two feminist cults.

Michel Hazanavicius and Louis Garrel attend with opening night screening of Redoubtable.
The 34th edition of the Jerusalem Film Festival kicked-off on Thursday night with an open-air screening of Michel Hazanavicius’s Jean-Luc Godard comedy Redoubtable and a stripped down opening ceremony aimed at keeping the spotlight on cinema.
Jff’s opening nights in the Sultan’s Pool amphitheatre in the shadow of the Old City walls have been politically-charged in recent years, thanks mainly to the presence of Israel’s controversial Culture Minister Miri Regev.
The former Israeli Defence Force spokeswoman’s views on how cultural funding should be redistributed away from the traditional cultural hubs of cities like Tel Aviv and not be meted out to works criticising the country have made her deeply unpopular within the country’s left-leaning cinema world.

After thrilling audiences as kick-ass secret agent Isla Faust alongside Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, we all wondered if Rebecca Ferguson would wind up – as so many young in-demand stars do – in a big comic book blockbuster. Many fans wanted to see her take to the stars as Captain Marvel, but it seems we might have to settle for her getting there with the aid of a rocket, as the Swedish actress has joined the cast of Skydance’s new space-set adventure, Life.
According to Variety, Ferguson will play a member of the crew of an International Space Station, who, “after retrieving a sample from Mars, discover that it displays signs of life, and proves to be more intelligent than expected.” It sounds a lot like the plot of the first Alien, but obviously it’s impossible to form a proper opinion with so little to go on.

Set in a 25th century in which the human mind has been digitized and the soul is transferable from one body to the next, the story follows a former elite interstellar warrior who has been imprisoned for five centuries.
Downloaded into a future he had tried to stop, he must solve a murder in a world where technology has made death nearly obsolete - if he does he'll get a chance at a new life on Earth.
"Shutter Island" scribe Laeta Kalogridis will pen, executive produce and serve as showrunner. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross will executive produce.
Netflix is aiming to spend about $6 billion on content this year including original series, films and acquisitions.

There was a wonderful science fiction romance in James Cameron’s original 1984 film The Terminator. It had a touch of everything: time travel, killer androids, romance, and hints of a technology gone haywire. It was shot on a modest budget with a familiar but not star cast, anchored by the hulking presence of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Ever since, though, the sequels have tended to eschew the original themes in favor of retreading immortal lines of dialogue, action pieces, and the eternal struggle between man and machine. With the exception of the first sequel, which introduced the world to the joys of CGI, they have been a middling mess. Even Fox’s The Sarah Connor Chronicles had more to do with a terminator trying to kill Sarah and/or John Connor than the large themes of man versus technology.
Therefore, it was refreshing to get back to basics in this summer’s Terminator Genesys.

Back before the film came out, Paramount and its producing partners were so confident in the new Terminator entry, Genisys, that they announced sequel dates for not one but two films. Then Genisys landed with a wet thud and that idea seemed to collapse like a T-1000 in molten metal. But according to one of the producers, Skydance Pictures’ Dana Goldberg, the whole idea of a continuing franchise has not been scrapped. “I wouldn’t say on hold, so much as readjusting,” she said Tuesday at The Wrap’s 6th Annual Media Leadership Conference, addressing the fact that the sequels were just part of the plan, with a TV show also in development. “At Skydance, when we talk movies, we talk universes, even more than franchises. So the idea of a Terminator TV show fits into that universe. All the steps have to be taken in unison.”And though the...

The summer of 2015 brought numerous long-dormant franchises back to center stage. From Mad Max: Fury Road, to Jurassic World, nostalgia seemed to be the driving force behind box office success. However, if one film failed to recapture its franchise.s former glory, it would have to be Terminator Genysis. Rumors have persisted for some time that the lackluster performance of the fifth Terminator film had resulted in Skydance putting the time-travel franchise on "hold." Now it seems that the studio has an understanding of the film's shortcomings. Producer Dana Goldberg recently attended The Wrap.s 6th Annual Media Leadership Conference and addressed the future of the franchise, stating: (We.re using) data and research to do a worldwide study and really talk to audiences about what they loved, and what maybe didn.t work for them, so that the next [step] we take with the franchise is the right one. ...

While the human consciousness is undeniably an incredible and miraculous thing, it is hard not to acknowledge the fact that the cold, mechanical nature of the Terminator is sometimes enviable – not least with regard to our general inability to let things go. When something catches our imagination, we tend to cling to it for all we’re worth – desperately trying to squeeze every last drop of connection from it, and refusing to accept that, sometimes, things just come to an end. Ironically, the Terminator franchise has been at that point for some time now, and as it turns out, Terminator: Genisys did nothing to improve the situation.
