Founding member of The Boys Next Door, The Birthday Party, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and Serge Gainsbourg song stylist Mick Harvey with Ed Bahlman on arriving in London: “The Pop Group were held very dear by the band as a kind of guide for how things could be, if you want to be that extreme. And The Fall were very much loved.”
In the second installment of Mick Harvey’s conversation with music producer and 99 Records founder, Ed Bahlman, on Mutiny In Heaven: The Birthday Party, they discussed The Birthday Party leaving Melbourne in 1980 to live in London; the differing life experiences at that time for him, Phill Calvert, and Tracy Pew, compared to Nick Cave and Rowland S Howard; British bands - The Fall, Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen, Killing Joke, The Pop Group and Mark Stewart; Lindsay Gravina’s on-camera interviews; Richard Lowenstein and...

In the 15 years between the 1981 release of the Gun Club’s first album and their frontman’s death in 1996, the bleached-blond rock & roll typhoon known as Jeffrey Lee Pierce touched the lives of Nick Cave, Blondie’s Debbie Harry, Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan, filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, Lydia Lunch, and countless others. His music could be invigorating and/or mysterious, sometimes at the same time. With the Gun Club and as a solo artist (sometimes billing himself cheekily as Ramblin’ Jeffrey Lee), he recorded revved-up punk, Delta-style blues, brooding folk,...

Matty Healy has apologised to Ice Spice over a podcast interview in which he and the hosts mocked Chinese and Inuit people in relation to the rapper.
The 1975 frontman came under fire for comments he made during an episode of the Adam Friedland Show podcast in February.
At one point in the podcast, Healy mentioned US rapper Ice Spice, whom he claimed he tried to message on Instagram.
Healy, Friedland and comedian Nick Mullen then appeared to confuse her heritage by referring to her as Inuit and Chinese, imitating and mocking the accents of each.
Mullen called the American rapper an “Inuit Spice Girl” and a “chubby Chinese lady” .
As reported by Rolling Stone, Healy, 34, addressed the comments during a 1975 concert in New Zealand.
The musician and son of Denise Welch said that he doesn’t like being famous and that he “makes a joke out of everything” and “can...

Mark Stewart, co-founder and singer of the UK post-punk act The Pop Group, has died at the age of 62.
As a teeanger, Stewart formed The Pop Group alongside guitarist John Waddington, bassist Simon Underwood, guitarist/saxophonist Gareth Sager, and drummer Bruce Smith. Rising from the ashes of punk rock’s first wave, The Pop Group pushed the genre into a far more diverse direction by embracing an explosive fusion of punk, dub, free jazz, and funk. They released two albums — 1979’s Y and 1980’s For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder? — before splitting in 1981.
Three decades later, Stewart, Sager, and Smith gave The Pop Group new life. After reforming for a UK tour in 2015, the trio hit the studio with producer Paul Epworth for their first album in 35 years, Citizen Zombie. They then embarked on a more extensive reunion tour that spanned much of 2016 and 2017.

To mark the release of Gazza, out now, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on DVD.
Paul Gascoigne was the face of ‘90s Britain, the most celebrated young footballer in the world, and a newspaper editor’s dream. His on-field brilliance was matched only by his off-field antics, which the tabloid media ruthlessly exploited for a celebrity-obsessed audience.
