“Ok, I can die now.”
So said a woman seated behind The Hollywood Reporter inside Mandalay Bay’s Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, host of the inaugural The Netflix Slam. She had just snapped a selfie that captured superstars Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz warming up on center court over her shoulder. Sure, it was a dramatic statement but it wasn’t obscene for such an occasion. There’s no shortage of gasp-worthy moments in Sin City, and there’s no doubt many of the 9,489 seated guests could relate to the sentiment.
The Sunday afternoon showdown, the latest in Netflix’s push for live streaming events, pitted two superstar Spaniards in an exhibition match that could be one of the final few times they meet across a net. The fact that it happened was a bit of a coup, too, as it was rescheduled last year due to Nadal...

“I don’t play basketball for the money, the fame; I only play because I wanted to change my family’s life,” Giannis Antetokounmpo says in the trailer for his upcoming documentary, Giannis: The Marvelous Journey, released by Prime Video on Wednesday.
The feature-length doc, set for release on Feb. 19, details Giannis’s family’s story beginning with his parents, Charles and Veronica Antetokounmpo, who immigrated to Greece from Nigeria in search of a better life for their family in 1991. Giannis, born in Athens, on Dec. 6, 1994, would make a similar choice when he officially made himself eligible for the 2013 NBA draft. On July 30, 2013, he signed his rookie contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, where he’s played for throughout his entire professional career, leading the team to their first NBA championship since 1971 in 2021.

Less than a week after we reported on Warner Bros. Discovery’s circling of buzzy Sundance documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, the studio has closed the deal valued at $15M, Deadline has learned, acquiring worldwide rights to the pic, which was one of the most buzzed-about titles of this year’s festival.
Wbd’s DC Studios, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures, HBO, CNN Films and Max jointly sought out the project and will collaborate on the film’s global release across theatrical and home viewing release windows. Super/Man‘s deal with the studio was natural given that it’s the home of the Superman films, which shot Reeve to stardom, before the tragic horse riding accident that left him a quadriplegic dependent on a ventilator to breathe.

Updated: “Super/Man,” a documentary about the life of Christopher Reeve, has finalized a deal to sell to Warner Bros. Discovery following its buzzy Sundance Film Festival premiere. It’s an interesting home for the documentary, because Reeve experienced his greatest commercial success playing the Man of Steel in the first four Superman movies, which Warner Bros. produced. James Gunn, the co-head of Warner-owned DC Studios, is currently reviving the character in the upcoming “Superman: Legacy,” which he wrote and will direct.
Wbd’s DC Studios. Warner Bros. Motion Pictures, HBO, CNN Films and Max will collaborate on the film’s global release across theatrical and home viewing release windows.
“Everyone at Warner Bros. Discovery is incredibly proud to come together as one company to partner with Christopher Reeve’s family and the filmmakers behind ‘Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story’ and bring his personal journey to audiences the world over.

Like other streamers, Netflix seems eager to get into live sports. But it isn’t quite ready to start paying the massive rights fees that such activity usually requires.

The event is slated to get underway on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

Netflix is taking a swing at live sports.
The streamer, which has mounted a few live events in the past year, has set its first live sports event — one that also reinforces the company brand. Formula 1 drivers Alex Albon, Pierre Gasly, Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz will be paired with PGA Tour golfers Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas for the match, which is set for Nov. 14 at the Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas. The location and timing aren’t incidental: The match will kick off the events leading up to F1’s inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix on Nov. 18.

“Super League: The War for Football” will drop on the streamer on Jan. 13. The fours-part series “documents the high stakes battle that is set off when plans for a breakaway league emerge and the past, present, and future of European football collide, leaving the game’s most powerful leaders to defend, or upend, the traditions of the sport,” according to the logline.
The doc will include access to league presidents, club owners and the individuals who came up with the idea to create a European Super League.
The story starts last April, when it was revealed that 12 of the world’s most powerful soccer clubs – including Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus – were planning to form a new midweek competition called...

The controversial failed attempt by some of the world’s biggest soccer teams to form a Super League is to be charted in a documentary event series from Apple TV+, produced by All Rise Films. Trailer is below.
Premiering in January, Super League: The War For Football will document the high-stakes battle that was set off when the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona outlined plans to form their own breakaway league.
Twelve of Europe’s leading soccer clubs confirmed their agreement to establish the league in April 2021 and the seismic proposals would have involved a midweek league with the founder clubs, challenging the European Champions League and domestic offerings.
The move instantly turned to chaos, with the sport’s biggest defenders vehemently opposed, and as quickly as it had been announced, it had been retracted, leading to a great deal of introspection in the UK,...

During the 2009 recession, History Channel found an unlikely hit in Pawn Stars, the unscripted series in which everyday people found life-changing treasures in their attic and turned them into cash at a time when money was tight.
The series has since gone on to become a massive hit. More than 700 episodes have been commissioned, with repeats airing across History, Lifetime, A&e and Netflix. Several others in the so-called transactional TV genre launched around the same time, series like Shark Tank, American Pickers, Storage Wars, American Restoration and others. A spinoff of the successful franchise that started it all, Pawn Stars Do America, will launch Nov. 9 on History.
Now, Brent Montgomery — who gave birth to transactional TV with the creation of Pawn Stars — is the driving force behind a rebirth in the genre as the U.S. economy finds itself in familiar territory...

Exclusive: Tennis great Michael Chang, who became the youngest winner of a major tournament singles championship when he beat Ivan Lendl in the 1989 French Open at age 17, will be the subject of a ’30 for 30′ documentary by ESPN Films.
While that win turned out to be Chang’s only major title, he appeared in three more major finals and left an enduring mark competing against a formidable group of American contemporaries like Pete Sampras, Jim Courier and Andre Agassi. He had 34 wins on the Atp tour from 1988 to 2000 before retiring in 2003.
The film, titled American Son, has completed production. It is the directing debut of Jay Caspian Kang, a writer, podcaster and TV correspondent. Kang was a founding editor of Grantland, the now-defunct sports and pop culture digital brand launched by ESPN. He also contributed to Vice News Tonight during its run on HBO.

There’s something so alluring about shows that tell interesting sports stories — ESPN’s “30 for 30” is one such show. When the show was created by Bill Simmons and Connor Schell, the overarching idea was to create 30 sports documentaries to mark ESPN’s 30 years anniversary. The first volume was a huge success and for that, the show had to continue. Well, it didn’t just continue, it also grew into a franchise.

Exclusive: Chernin Entertainment has hired former Red Arrow Studios Chairman and CEO Jan Frouman.
Frouman is joining the company, which is behind films such as the Planet of the Apes franchise and Ford v. Ferrari and Apple series See, in an unspecified role. Chernin Entertainment reps declined to comment.
He was most recently President of International at Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook, which, earlier this year, took full control of German producer Telepool, where Frouman was previously CEO.
It comes as Chernin Entertainment eyes the acquisition of Red Arrow, the production group behind series such as Netflix’s Love Is Blind and Amazon’s Bosch, although sources caution that his hire is a coincidence rather than directly related to its interest in the European superindie. Chernin Entertainment is understood to be one of a number of suitors that are taking a look at the business.
