NEW YORK -- Viacom Inc.'s MTV Networks unit said that it has struck a definitive agreement to acquire Harmonix Music Systems, the developer of the PlayStation 2 surprise video game hit "Guitar Hero", for $175 million in cash. In the entertainment company's latest play to expand in the digital and particular video gaming space, Harmonix will become part of the MTV Networks' Music and Logo Enterprises unit, led by executive vp Jeff Yapp. Friday's takeover deal comes after a successful partnership dating back to November for MTV Games to feature the "Guitar Hero" franchise in original programming, creative promotions and competitions across several MTV properties.
