Epigmenio Ibarra proudly shows off the impressive new facilities of his 27-year-old production house, Argos Comunicación, located in an industrial zone outside Mexico City. He walks through one of six brand-new sound stages, a state-of-the-art suite where colorists are working on a series, a set-construction warehouse and more. A production has wrapped the day before, another will start the following week, and still another in two weeks.
Construction of the facilities was completed less than two years ago, just in time for the extraordinary explosion of the Mexican entertainment industry that followed the arrival of global companies like Netflix and Amazon. Not that Ibarra had an inkling of what was coming. As recently as five years ago, he says, the local television landscape was still dominated by Televisa and TV Azteca, and perhaps only five series were being produced in all of Mexico.

Terrazas ankled Canana in 2009 to make his feature debut, “Machete Language,” produced by Mexico City shingle Mr. Woo and exec-produced by García Bernal and Diego Luna.

Los Cabos, Mexico — Paula Amor, the former head of communications of Mexico’s Morelia Festival, now has one of the most exciting jobs in Mexico, running La Corriente del Golfo, the new film-tv production shingle launched by Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna in April.

Los Cabos, Mexico — A mix of traditional pre-colonial and modern, urban-infused storytelling, Julio Hernández Cordón’s “Neza” pitches at this week’s Los Cabos Festival Works in Development, where the filmmaker’s most recent film “Buy Me a Gun” – Director’s Fortnight and San Sebastian Horizontes Latinos competitor – is in competition.
Born in North Carolina but educated at Mexico’s Ccc, Hernández has positioned himself as one of Mexico and Mesoamerica’s most solid filmmakers. In 2007 his feature “Gasolina” won the Filmsin Progress award at San Sebastian and a year later topped the festival’s Horizontes Latinos competition. Since that time, he has pumped out critical and festival acclaimed films regularly, including “Atrás hay relámpagos” – a participant at Rotterdam – and the aforementioned “Buy Me a Gun.”
“Neza” is a modern tale with pre-Spanish roots. It’s the story of a pair of betrayals which become too much for the titular character to bear.

Cannes — There’s a scene in “Bayoneta,” Mexican Kyzza Terrazas’ second fiction feature, where Miguel, played by “Club of Crows’” Luis Gerardo Méndez, is asked to sing a song. He does so, Chalino Sanchez’s “Nieves de enero,” a lovely spare ballad about heartbreak. Miguel knows something about that sentiment. An up-and-coming Mexican boxer, a Sydney Olympics medal winner who floors “Matador” Madrigal Ríos, Tijuana’s Miguel “Bayoneta” Galíndez’s prospects look bright until he kills his opponent in the ring.
Looking for atonement, even punishment and out of a sense of shame – as a father, he can’t look his daughter in the eye after failing in basic human ethics – he seeks exile in the snowy wastes of Tirku, a town in Finland, where he trains boxers. “Bayoneta” is a film about immigration, but for emotional need, not economic necessity. The Los Cabos International Film Festival, now heading into its 7th year, aims to grow and strengthen a pan-North American cinema culture, promoting filmmakers and films from Mexico, Canada and the U.S. Los Cabos also hosts an industry platform intended to link professionals throughout the territories.
A well-rounded selection of films: Two fiction, Kyzza Terrazas’ “Bayoneta” and Fernando Frias’ “I’m No Longer Here”; two docs, Betzabé García’s “#Mickey” and Rodrigo Iturralde Álvarez and Georgina González Rodríguez’s “Finding the Werewolf”; and, notably, two animated features, “A Costume for Nicolas” from Eduardo Rivero and “Olimpia” from J. M. Cravioto, make up this year’s selected films-in-progress.

“Here on Earth,” a political thriller that is an auteur turn from Gael Garcia Bernal, will bring much needed star power to the Croisette during the international TV Canneseries festival.
Produced by Fox Networks Group Latin America (Fngla) and Mexico’s La Corriente del Golfo, “Here on Earth” is more than just a star vehicle. In industry terms, it’s a high-end scripted drama. In political terms, it skewers Mexico’s ruling elite, turning a spotlight on the horse-trading, influence peddling, luxury, blackmail and murder — ferociously unexpectedly or hauntingly casual — practiced by one of Mexico’s most influential families whose patriarch, Governor Mario Rocha (Daniel Gimenez-Cacho), is preparing to run for president. In artistic terms, it’s one of the most ambitious projects yet from actor-director-producer Garcia Bernal.
Featuring, in figurative terms, fratricide and a father’s betrayal of his son, “Here on Earth” is “epic, near biblical, and highly classic,...

In an anticipated move following their recent split from Canana, the shingle they co-founded with Pablo Cruz, Mexican multi-hyphenates Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna have launched a new film-tv company, La Corriente del Golfo (Gulfstream in English).
The new shingle aims to first serve as an independent production company for theatrical film and television projects and secondly, to develop a variety of community-oriented projects. Bernal and Luna are still collaborating on initiatives like Ambulante, a documentary film festival in Mexico that they co-founded 14 years ago.
“La Corriente del Golfo is an ocean current that originates in the Gulf of Mexico and travels all the way to the North Atlantic, allowing for a temperate climate – and, without which, there’d be Arctic tundra,” said Garcia Bernal, adding: “We take up the symbol of this global current to emphasize that liberty – in all its meanings –should flow as freely as an ocean current.

The festival runs through October 30, and IndieWire has partnered with Festival Scope to give readers the chance to attend from the comfort of their own homes.
Now through Thursday, October 27, IndieWire readers have an exclusive opportunity to register for a chance to win an online festival pass to screen 20 features and documentaries from the Morelia Film Festival on the Festival Scope website. Click here for the...

2012 appears to be the year for younger, i.e. under 10 years old, underground fests to blow it wide open and go for broke. This time it’s the 4th annual Oakland Underground Film Festival that is expanding its horizons into a blowout four-day, much more densely packed affair, running on Sept. 27-30 at several different locations.
Expanding on the types of films they screen, this year Oakuff is jammed pack with a wide variety of documentaries, thrillers, a bevy of short films and a special tribute to blaxploitation films hosted by BadAzz MoFo’s David Walker.
The fest opens on the 27th with skateboarding filmmaker Stacy Peralta’s latest, Bones Brigade: An Autobiography, which documents his own involvement with California board culture along with peers like Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen. Following that will be Ya’Ke Smith’s complex drama about the effects of child molestation.

Though he makes his feature debut with Machete Language, writer-director Kyzza Terrazas already occupies an interesting space within the Mexican film scene. The former head of development at Canana - the production company founded by Gael Garcia Bernal - the Kenyan born Terrazas is a published author who wrote the script for Bernal's directorial feature Deficit while also serving as an executive producer on acclaimed titles such as Drama / Mex and Voy A Explotar. For his own debut Terrazas cast Mexican punk rock icon Jessy Bulbo and actor, musician and painter Andres Almeida (Y Tu Mama Tambien) for a gritty story of a pair of counter culture activists finding themselves caught between youth and adulthood as they hit their thirties.Ray and Ramona are...

- Back when Gael Garcia Bernal and his new production co. (Canana Films) announced that Bernal would commence his directorial debut - my first thought was : with the type of film school he has been to I'd give the director's chair a try. The young actor has had the fortune of working with such directors as Iñárritu, Almodóvar, Salles, Gondry and Cuarón. I was interested in seeing Déficit at Cannes but balked at the idea of fighting off hundreds of ticket holders to get into a mini theater - my bet was right on there was too much commotion for a film. Fast forward to September and I caught it at Tiff. Low budget and somewhat experimental - for a first film it has spurts of interest and some social commentary about class system but I'll quickly forget the film - but no before I publish the review...that comes to you shortly.

The final selection for the Critics Week lineup will be announced April 26.
