Above: Us one sheet for The 4th Man (Paul Verhoeven, Netherlands, 1983).
I’ve always liked this elegant poster for Paul Verhoeven’s The 4th Man with its striking combination of soft realism and hard geometry (that knife-like number 4!) and I decided recently to look for other designs by the artist who signs himself Topazio. But, although I have found a number of pieces with his signature, I have so far come up short on much information on the man. Vincent Topazio was, it seems, an illustrator who worked from at least the mid 70s (I found a 1975 New York magazine illustration for an article on dog trainers credited to him as well as the cover for The Average White Band’s Cut the Cake from the same year) through at least the mid 80s. I have found seven of his movie posters, all illustrated in what seems to be a combination of crayon and airbrush.

As we rightfully celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Beatles' rockin'-vasion of America, it is also worth noting the 40th anniversaries of progressive rock albums released in 1974 -- a banner year for the genre.
In alphabetical rather than chronological order, here is just a short list, along with links to a representative composition from each album.
Enjoy!
Apostrophe (Frank Zappa)
Although Zappa had been "at it" since 1966 -- as one of the earliest progenitors of progressive rock -- and although he had already put out over a dozen important albums, Apostrophe (and the immediately prior album, Over-Nite Sensation) arguably brought him to the masses through his cross-over "hit," "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow," which, despite its length, received regular airplay on FM stations. It didn't hurt that the album also included two of his funniest, most fun songs, "Cozmik Debris" and "Stinkfoot."
Hamburger Concerto (Focus)
For those who only know Focus via their 1971 novelty mega-hit,...

Never mind a broken heart, Xander's in greater danger of all of his limbs getting smashed to pieces. Just your average Sunnydale Valentine's Day then.
If Phases presented Buffy's assertion that men are predatory ghouls, then Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered gleefully shows that women are just as capable of an axe-fuelled, hair-pulling rampage. Thanks to Amy's sketchy spell casting, Xander is finding that breaking Cordelia's heart is a tougher proposition than the token nutty chocolate in the box. As a result, the females of Sunnydale have fallen head over heels in love with Xander. But while this is Xander's ideal fantasy scenario on paper, it's considerably less rosy in reality.
Never let it be said that Buffy The Vampire Slayer ignores a special themed holiday. Christmas. Halloween. Thanksgiving. Valentine's Day is scrawled on the Buffy calendar with this smart little masterpiece from Marti Noxon. In true Buffy style, it's...

They say a well-rounded education is the key to success, and if that truly is the case, the my schooling is woefully incomplete when it comes to the subject of pop. That's why we bring you "Popology," the guide to modern radio-friendly stars as seen through the eyes of a guy who grew up on punk and metal. In case you missed previous installments, catch up with Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and the Spice Girls here.
In this week's installment, Puff Daddy brings rap to the radio.
In today's musical landscape, it's easy to take hip-hop for granted as a force on pop radio. There have been crossover hits as long as there have been DJs cutting up breakbeats and MCs spitting rhymes. And while pop radio readily embraces rap songs that have no aspirations to be pop tunes (the...

Running Time: 2 hrs 4 mins
Rating: PG-13

Plot: The whole world knows Tony Stark is Iron Man and they love him. Well, one man doesn’t: Ivan Vanko (Rourke). Ivan wants to bring the Stark legacy to an end, and business Justin Hammer (Rockwell) is more than happy to help.
Who’S It For? It’s easy to say everyone, but I would say if you were a fan of the first, you’ll like the second. Temper your “wow” factor a little bit, because there isn’t a lot of new here. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Expectations: The first Iron Man was a strong start. Plus, if you look at this Top 7 Superhero Sequel Seconds list … you’ll notice one thing,...
