Here's a little secret that many "Star Wars" fans have clued into by now: This franchise is oftentimes at its best in animated form. "Rebels" and "The Clone Wars" have received the bulk of the attention in recent years (and for good reason), but a whole new contender has entered the ring. The first season of "Star Wars: Visions" definitively brought the fantasy space opera back to its roots, having been produced by seven Japanese animation studios that were allowed the freedom to reinterpret George Lucas' classic stories as they saw fit. The final results, needless to say, were as creative, breathtaking, and just plain entertaining as "Star Wars" has been in years.
Now, over a year and a half since its debut, we've finally received our first look at the next season. Dubbed "Volume 2," the next batch of episodes in this anthology series looks even more exciting than the last.

Haven't yet had your fill of "Star Wars" on the small screen? Well, you're in luck. Today brings some very good news about one of the best-ever additions to the popular space-faring franchise.
"Star Wars: Visions," the anime anthology series that filled in the gaps between the movies and shows with some of the most refreshingly original and exciting stories the property has ever seen, is coming back just in time for the geekiest "Star Wars"-themed holiday of them all. Oh, and the new season is bringing along some incredibly intriguing talent that should please just about any fan of animation out there, too. If "Star Wars" fatigue is a real thing, well, luckily nobody ever informed the sprawling creative team behind "Visions" about it.
Disney+ and Lucasfilm announced that season 2 of "Star Wars: Visions" will premiere on Disney+ streaming on "Star Wars Day" -- May 4, 2023. But wait, there's more!

Though it has not yet been expressly depicted on screen, according to the executive producers of Disney’s animated series Star Wars: Resistance,” two longstanding supporting characters are a gay couple.
The reveal came when Justin Ridge and Brandon Auman appeared on the “Coffee With Kenobi” podcast. The two said that the alien characters Okra, voiced by Bobby Moynihan, and Flix, voiced by Jim Rash, are “absolutely a gay couple and we’re proud of that.”
On the show, Okra and Flix are in charge of the Office of Acquisitions in the Colossus station where much of the action takes place. The nature of the characters’ relationship has never been described outright since the show premiered a year ago. But occasional moments like this one, where they take a break from running their business to visit Flix’s mother, at least have hinted, possibly, at something more than friendship.

Star Wars Resistance has been confirmed to feature the saga’s first ever openly gay couple. Though there have been Lgbt+ characters in expanded media such as novels – check out Star Wars: Aftermath, for example – there haven’t been any gay relationships in the saga on screen to date. Fans probably couldn’t have predicted who the first Sw gay couple would be, though, as it’s a pair of aliens resembling a pig and an owl.
Exec producers Athena Portillo, Justin Ridge and Brandon Auman spoke about Resistance – the Disney animated series that’s mostly aimed at a younger audience than The Clone Wars and Rebels – on the Coffee with Kenobi podcast recently and it was Ridge who spilled the beans on Flix and Orka, loveable comic relief characters who man the Office of Acquisitions in the Colossus station.

Disney is moving the needle of inclusivity a bit more with Star Wars Resistance as executive producers Athena Portillo, Justin Ridge, and Brandon Auman have confirmed that the characters Orka (voiced by Jim Rash) and Flix (Bobby Moynihan) from the animated series are an openly gay couple.
In an interview on the Coffee with Kenobi podcast, Ridge said they are proud of Flix and Orka’s relationship. This marks the first Lgbtq couple on screen in the Star Wars universe.
The news about Orka and Flix seem to be part of a bigger picture Disney is painting when it comes to representation and inclusion. During Comic-Con in July, in addition to having Natalie Portman play a female Thor, it was announced that Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie will be looking for “her queen” in the forthcoming Thor: Love and Thunder, making her the first Lgbtq superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In a gay galaxy far, far away, the Disney Channel original animated series “Star Wars Resistance” is lightyears ahead of the rest of the franchise’s live-action counterparts: Orka and Flix, the duo operating the Office of Acquisitions in the Colossus, are in fact an openly gay couple. Not only are they gay lovers — they’re two different species. The leggier Flix is a Gozzo, while the stouter Orka is a Chadra-Fan.
Their relationship status was confirmed by “Star Wars Resistance” executive producers Athena Portillo, Justin Ridge, and Brandon Auman, who appeared on an episode of the podcast “Coffee With Kenobi” hosted by Drew Taylor.
“I think it’s safe to say they’re an item, absolutely,” Ridge said. “They’re absolutely a gay couple and we’re proud of that. We love Flix and Orka.” Bobby Moynihan voices Orka, and his boyfriend Flix is voiced by Jim Rash.

Along the way, he makes a few friends and participates in high-stakes races with a pretty junky ship called the Fireball.
The show, which is set years after Return of the Jedi and just before The Force Awakens, has plenty of connections to Episode VII. The valiant Poe Dameron plays a supporting role on the show as Kazuda's mentor while Captain Phasma leads her forces in the days before her mission to Jakku. When did family-friendly TV grow a social conscience? Whether it’s the more youth-skewing “Steven Universe” and “Andi Mack,” or edgier teen offerings like “Big Mouth” and “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” shows aimed at adolescents are taking up the mantle to account for social wrongs ranging from sexism and racism to body-shaming and school safety.
Television has a long, if spotty, history of addressing social issues on primetime; Norman Lear was a master of this on “Good Times,” “All in the Family,” and “Maude.” However, this wasn’t the stuff of TV for kids unless they were watching Very Special Episodes, ABC Afterschool Specials, or PBS programs like “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” or “Sesame Street.”
Today, it’s become the norm for mainstream children’s programming to tackle representation, body positivity, and gun violence — touchy topics that once would never have made it out of development. “One Day at a Time...

Cast your eyes over the (very long) list of in-development Star Wars titles and you’ll notice that, like Resistance, the vast majority are rooted in that sweet spot between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.
There are exceptions to the trend, of course; Lucasfilm projects like Episode IX and the hotly-anticipated Mandalorian series from Jon Favreau are the real outliers. But when it comes to Star Wars Resistance, fans are beginning to fall in love with Poe, Leia, and rookie X-wing pilot Kazuda Xiono, who became “The Recruit” during Sunday’s well-received pilot.
It’s by no means perfect, but as far as animated Star Wars series go, it’s a welcome addition to the Lucasfilm family, and one that will no doubt help fill the void between now and Episode IX. And while it initially begins six months prior to The Force Awakens, Resistance scribe Brandon Auman...

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, George Lucas created a sci-fi franchise so vast and so enduring, new stories are still being told. The latest installment in that universe is Disney’s animated series “Star Wars Resistance,” which takes place between the events of “Return of the Jedi” and “The Force Awakens.”
In the series, New Republic pilot Kazuda Xiono (Christopher Sean) is recruited by Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) as a spy on Colossus, a massive refueling station on the ocean planet Castilon. While he works as a mechanic, he also gets involved racing the ace pilots who are defending the station.
“Resistance” isn’t just a retread of the same two-sided conflict story that’s been told before in “Star Wars,” and it both looks and feels different as well. Here’s a breakdown of how “Resistance” sets itself apart from the rest of the galactic franchise:

“Can you imagine what it’s like to be an ace pilot?” Kazuda Xiono (“Kaz”) asks in the new trailer for Disney Channel’s upcoming animated show “Star Wars Resistance.” The adventure series will have a one-hour premiere on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt on Disney Channel, DisneyNOW, and Disney Channel VOD, with further airings on Disney Xd.

Seams begin to show in Ezra and Thrawn's stories, but Star Wars Rebels season three gets off to a strong start...
This review contains spoilers.
3.1 Steps Into Shadow
Welcome back to Star Wars Rebels coverage! Season three starts with a bang, as Grand Admiral Thrawn takes the stage, transitioning from the expanded universe to the world of animation. Steps Into Shadow was first shown at Star Wars Celebration London this summer, but for those unable to attend the convention, the show started at a new time slot on Saturday nights. There have been some changes behind the scenes too, with Dave Filoni handing the supervising director spot to The Clone Wars veteran Justin Ridge in order to be more involved with the day-to-day writing and animation.
Season three begins with a bit of a time jump. Young Jedi Ezra Bridger has grown, and not necessarily for the better.

Here's a awesome piece of cartoon style art that mashes together the style of Star Wars with characters from Avatar: The Last Airbender. It's cool to see how well these two universes fit together. The art was created by Star Wars: The Clone Wars' David Filoni who had this to say,
When I left Avatar the Last Airbender I gave every member of the crew this image of the main cast as Star Wars Characters. Working on Avatar was one of the greatest experiences of my career and I have never printed a copy of it since I gave it to the crew of Season 1. I drew the image on paper and then had it scanned in. The color was done by my then-assistant director Justin Ridge, who later came up and worked with me on Clone Wars.
What do you think of the mashup?...
