Although 45 minutes of Middle-Aged White Male Aggression may feel out of pace with the current national moment, Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe has always written more open-minded and inclusive lyrics than many of his peers — you just have to strain your ears to make sense of his screeds.
When he bellows hoarsely about “The American Scream” on “Checkmate,” one of 10 chugging ragers on the band’s self-titled eighth album, it’s not just generalized hate-the-world enmity but a fierce Trump takedown, with Blythe sarcastically using the phrase “Make America Hate Again.

Lamb of God have shared a thundering new song, “Routes,” which was lyrically inspired by the time frontman Randy Blythe spent protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota. The song will appear on Lamb of God’s upcoming self-titled album, out June 19th.
“Routes” is a bulldozer of a track — packed with a relentless barrage of drums and riffs — featuring guest vocals from Testament singer Chuck Billy. Blythe’s lyrics paint a vivid portrait of environmental destruction tied to centuries of injustice toward indigenous people.

When the coughing jags began on March 16th, Larry Campbell first attributed it to the early onset of pollen. The guitarist, Grammy-winning producer of three Levon Helm albums and respected backup player for Helm and Bob Dylan was back home in Woodstock, New York after a few days in New York City. Then came a fever that spiked over 100 degrees, and three days later, the 65-year-old musician was tested for the coronavirus. The results came back positive a few days later.

Slayer and Exodus guitarist Gary Holt confirmed Tuesday that he has Covid-19.
“So, I finally received my test results back and positive it was,” he wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post (via Blabbermouth). “[My wife] Lisa’s came back negative, and it’s been long enough since my symptoms that I am officially in the clear to do the only things I’m allowed, like buy my own groceries! I feel great, made it through the tougher moments, and my health feels 100 percent normal. Thanks to everyone who had wished us well.

It was just one day after Testament returned home from a five-week European tour earlier this month that the thrash-metal band’s frontman, Chuck Billy, started to feel ill. “I had an achy body, headaches, coughing, tight chest, I lost my sense of smell and taste — the whole thing,” he says. He texted his bandmates and road crew and heard that others were experiencing the same things. After a few days of feeling horrible, he and his wife got tested for Covid-19 and were not surprised when they heard the results.

Lamb of God return from a five-year hiatus with “Checkmate,” the first single from the metal group’s upcoming self-titled album.
“‘Checkmate’ brings together all the components of the Lamb of God sound that we’ve been developing over the last two decades, but with the ambition and ferocity that comes with the start of a new chapter for our band,” guitarist Mark Morton said in a statement. “Re-energized and reignited, this is Lamb of God 2020. We’ve never been more excited.”

Members of Metallica, Exodus, Testament and other San Francisco–area thrash-metal groups reflect on how wild the scene was when it exploded in the early Eighties in the trailer for the upcoming documentary Murder in the Front Row: The San Francisco Bay Area Thrash Metal Story.
“It was scary, and it was dark,” Testament guitarist Alex Skolnick says. “It was this outlet for angst.”
“Poseurs must die!” Kirk Hammett exclaims with his hands in the air.
The film, which was directed by Adam Dubin (Beastie Boys’ “Fight for Your Right to Party” video,...
