2023 was a year of sustained gains year-on-year across the Nordics, although moviegoing is still down 23%-30% from pre-covid times. The summer was exceptional thanks to the “Barbenheimer” mania that boosted all five Nordic countries. Iceland was the only territory where “Oppenheimer” ranked third, after the local comedy “Wild Game” one of three Icelandic titles that enabled local fare to jump 123% in box office for a 14% market share.
Norway enjoyed a solid year and a 27% market share for domestic fare, led by three blockbusters based on popular IPs, including the top seller “Christmas at Cobble Street.”
In Finland, the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon was perhaps the strongest among the Nordic nations, making July the biggest ever in Finnish cinema history. Also notable was the success of Aki Kaurismäki’s “Fallen Leaves,” the fourth biggest hit of the year, which helped local titles secure a 23.4% share.

Intelligent, unsettling drama focuses on the treatment of German refugees by the Danes who have endured five years as a captive nation
At the end of the second world war, around 250,000 German refugees were left stranded in Denmark. What responsibility, if any, did Danes have, after five years of brutal Nazi occupation, to look after them? That’s the question at the heart of this intelligent drama-thriller from Anders Walter. It’s a film that’s as morally complex as it gets, with some nailbiting moments; I watched a couple of scenes through my hands. What’s really interesting is that it doesn’t strike a triumphant note anywhere; no scene of flag-waving crowds cheering as the defeated Germans sling their hook.
It’s April 1945, a month before the end of the German occupation, and Jacob (Pilou Asbæk) is the headteacher of a boys’ boarding school. Like all the film...

From social justice to adolescent romance, this year’s Oscar-nominated shorts filmmakers don’t take long to make their points. The 2023 field of nominees include films from virtually every corner of the world, including Ireland, Iran, India, Norway, Italy and, of course, the U.S.
From left, An Irish Goodbye, Ivalu, Le Pupille, Night Ride and The Red Suitcase.

An Irish Goodbye, written and directed by Tom Berkeley and Ross White, is a dark comedy that follows a pair of estranged brothers who must learn to get along after their mother’s untimely death. Berkeley’s own views of loss inspired the film’s exploration of love and grief. “It’s about reconnection, redemption and the idea of how, in the darkest moments for those two characters, they end up finding each other through their commitment to their mom and their mom’s memory,” he says. “Grief...

Of the 10 films up for best picture, no fewer than six run 199 minutes or more. On one extreme, James Cameron’s punishing “Avatar” sequel is long enough to require bathroom breaks. At the other, Daniels’ Adhd-styled “Everything Everywhere All at Once” proves equally exhausting, dedicating every hyperkinetic second to stimulating easily distracted audiences. It’s enough to make folks grateful for the lower-profile but still engaging live-action shorts category, where nominees are bound by a strict 40-minute time limit. This year’s crop — the so-so “2023 Oscar Nominated Short Films: Live Action” program — clocks in at under two hours. Available in theaters and on myriad streaming platforms, the international assembly may be a hit-and-miss affair, but never outstays its welcome.

An Irish Goodbye
Inspiration for the black comedy came from co-director Tom Berkeley at soccer match where two brothers were “at each other’s throats,” although where one was caring for the other who had Down syndrome. In “An Irish Goodbye,” estranged brothers Lorcan and Turlough are brought back together following their mother’s death, and Turlough must take care of his younger brother, who has Down syndrome. Lorcan will not leave their farm until they complete all 100 items on their mother’s bucket list. Co-director Ross White tapped into his observations from working in a special education school. “There can be this lack of cynicism with people with Down syndrome, a sort of openness and an honesty and purity about the way they see the world,” he says. The film depicts the brothers’ respective responses to death: “You’ve got this one character who is coping with this in a very emotionally open way,...

The title that saw Riz Ahmed stifle laughter, the press room crack up and Allison Williams murmur “no comment” at Oscar nominations last month hits theaters today as ShortsTV presents Oscar Nominated Short Films at circa 380 locations in 75 markets.

In the most prominent Oscar categories, many of the nominees are fairly established; the short film categories, and the Best Live Action short in particular, provide more room for discoveries. It was here, 18 years ago, that “The Banshees of Inisherin” writer-director Martin McDonagh won for his short “Six Shooter,” and where Andrea Arnold won a year prior for “Wasp,” from a category of nominees that also included Taika Waititi and Nacho Vigalondo.
It’s also a category that can attract support from major Hollywood talent, as with last year’s winner “The Long Goodbye,” starring and produced by Riz Ahmed, who shared the award with director Aneil Karia. Yet even in that case, the winner of the category — a spoken-word indictment of racial violence — was more daring and inventive than the bulk of the feature nominees.

Ivalu
At the very beginning of this Oscar-shortlisted short film. the title character, Ivalu, is missing. We follow her younger sister, Pipaluk (Mila Heilmann Kreutzmann) as she searches for her, guided by a crow, through all the places where they used to spend time together, in their small Greenland town and the surrounding wilderness. Eventually, she will discover the truth by making sense of her own memories. The film is adapted from Morten Dürr’s graphic novel. At a Q&a where he is joined by Mila as well as co-director Pipaluk K Jorgensen and producers Kim Magnusson and Rebecca Pruzan, director Anders Walter explains that he fell in love with the graphic novel as soon as he read it.
“I wanted to adapt it into a film,” he says. “And then the whole process of adapting the source material started and you know, trying to find your voice in something that.

More than 300 industry delegates from top shingles including Warner Bros Discovery, Viaplay, Germany’s Constantin Film, The Match Factory and France’s TF1 Studio are expected on the shores of Haugesund, Norway, over Aug. 23-26, for Scandinavia’s major film showcase, New Nordic Films.
Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winner “Triangle of Sadness” will both open the film confab festivities and screen alongside 18 new Nordic finished films at the market. But for the avid buyers and programmers of Nordic content, the biggest draw will be the 18 works in progress – half of them looking for sales and distribution – and 23 pics in development available for co-production and financing.
“We’ve noticed a shift in recent years, with buyers and sellers favouring the Works in Progress and Nordic Coproduction Market over the market screenings. These seem to be more valuable for the industry,” said Gyda Velvin Myklebust, head of New Nordic Films.

This trashy family fantasy – in which a lonely girl hunts giants in a handily creepy forest – confuses fake jeopardy with drama
There should be a separate genre heading for this film: time-wasting droopy fantasy. It is based on a graphic novel by Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura and directed by the Danish film-maker Anders Walter, who won an Oscar in 2014 for his short film Helium. From the outset, there is a heart-sinking sense of deja vu. Ja Bayona’s recent movie A Monster Calls – about a child retreating from emotional pain into CGI fantasy – had a certain storytelling force. But this awfully similar confection is flaccid: a pointless parade of unearned emotion, unearned drama, unearned everything.
Madison Wolfe plays Barbara, a lonely and troubled girl who regularly roams through the nearby forest hunting for “giants”, which we periodically get to see – sub-Iron-Giant/dementors. But there is no question of us,...

I Kill Giants is quite a name for a movie. A really good name actually because with that and the awesome artwork on its poster, I was immediately intrigued…. Based on the comic book of the same title, I Kill Giants tells the story of a troubled girl, Barbara (Madison Wolfe) who believes giants are coming to her town and she is the one to stop them. She has some help in new friend Sophia (Sydney Wade) as well as her sister Karen (Imogen Poots) and the school psychologist Mrs Molle (Zoe Saldana) who don’t initially believe what she is saying.
Those looking for a horror movie full of giant slaying might be a little disappointed to hear that this isn’t that kind of film.

MaryAnn’s quick take… A movie as thrillingly weird as its protagonist. We are totally enrapt by the wonder and the terror of her imagination, and the power of it to create joy and solace. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about girls and women

Originally published in 2009, Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura's graphic novel I Kill Giants introduced us to Barbara, an uncompromising teen girl dealing with some pretty big family issues while also saving her community from giants who randomly emerge to destroy her and everyone she loves.
Fast forward nearly a decade and now Kelly and NIimura's vision has been turned into a feature film directed by Oscar-winning Danish director Anders Walter, produced by Chris Columbus and starring Madison Wolfe, Zoe Saldana and Imogen Poots.

Oscar-winning Danish filmmaker Anders Walter was vibrating with excitement when he boarded his flight to Canada, his debut feature was about to have its first press screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. It had been almost four years since he’d won the Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short, and the 39-year-old director had dedicated every one of them to the challenge of financing and filming “I Kill Giants.”
For all of Walter’s pedigree and potential, the project had been an uphill battle from the very beginning. It didn’t seem to matter that it was based on a popular graphic novel with a built-in fanbase, or that it would star Brie Larson and Zoe Saldana. Twice the movie was ready to roll; twice it had collapsed. But this was all behind him as he sat on the tarmac at Copenhagen Airport. When he left Denmark, his career...

Sneak Peek new footage, plus images from the upcoming thriller "I Kill Giants", directed by Anders Walter and written by Joe Kelly, based on his Image Comics series (2008), starring Madison Wolfe, Zoe Saldana and Imogen Poots, opening March 23, 2018:

While the main creative force behind I Kill Giants is unquestionably screenwriter Joe Kelly, who adapted his own limited comic series of the same name that he co-created with artist J.M. Ken Niimura, director Anders Walter’s past work including his Oscar-winning short, Helium, shows he’s hardly a stranger to the source material’s subject matter. Kelly and Niimura found success creating a work that reflects what happens when a child uses their imagination to confront a still abstract understanding of death.
It’s no surprise then that the two films I thought about while watching this adaptation were A Monster Calls and Where the Wild Things Are. I Kill Giants plays like a hybrid of sorts that’s just as cognizant of keeping things as darkly resonant. It’s okay for a family film targeting an audience that would call its lead (Madison Wolfe’s Barbara Thorson) a...

I Kill Giants, produced by Chris Columbus (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) and directed by Academy Award-winning director Anders Walter, is based on the critically acclaimed graphic novel by Image Comics’ Joe Kelly and J.M.
