On tour with her daughter after her cancer diagnosis the Scottish national treasure opens up about her life and finds big laughs in the face of death
Here’s a documentary following the Glaswegian standup comic Janey Godley on her Not Dead Yet Tour; in 2022, Godley was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer, and she does the first gig in Inverness a day after chemotherapy. And God, is she funny, with jokes running the gamut from the disgraced peer Michelle Mone living in a static caravan to cancer. Her daughter, Ashley Storrie, also hilarious, does the warm up.
The title of the film is just Janey; no surname necessary – not in Scotland anyway, where Godley has a special place in people’s hearts. During Covid her voiceovers of first minister Nicola Sturgeon’s press conferences went viral (I remember watching one feeling almost guilty for laughing so hard). Before that, in...

The controversial Jeremy Clarkson Sun column last year slamming Meghan Markle has been censured for “a pejorative and prejudicial reference to the Duchess of Sussex’s sex,” but escaped punishment for harassing her or being prejudicial on grounds of race.
UK newspaper regulator Ipso has immediately ordered Rupert Murdoch’s UK newspaper to publish a summary of the findings on the same page as the column appears along with the front page and on its website.
Ipso ruled that the former Top Gear host’s column, titled “One day, Harold the glove puppet will tell the truth about A Woman Talking B*****ks,” contained a “pejorative and prejudicial reference to the Duchess’ sex.”
The column, which was published in December 2022, said Markle should be “made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!” and throw lumps of excrement at her” — a reference...

The U.K.’s media watchdog, the Independent Press Standards Organisation (Ipso), has upheld two complaints lodged by women’s rights charities against Jeremy Clarkson’s December column in The Sun about Meghan Markle.
Variety can reveal that after a months-long process, Ipso found that the “Grand Tour” host’s column breached Clause 12 of the regulator’s Editors’ Code of Practice, which relates to discrimination. The case marks the first time in its nine-year history that Ipso has upheld a complaint on the basis of sexism.
As a result, The Sun has been instructed to publish a summary of the regulator’s findings in the spot where Clarkson’s column regularly appears in the print edition, and reference the decision on its front page and website homepage for 24 hours — something the tabloid hasn’t been forced to do since 2016, when its front-page “Queen Backs Brexit” splash was found to have breached press regulations.

Brian Cox has once again taken aim at Jeremy Strong’s approach to acting, this time blaming his Succession costar’s birthplace.
The Scottish actor, who plays Strong’s character’s father, Logan Roy, in the acclaimed HBO series, previously criticised his co-star’s method acting style during a now-infamous New Yorker interview published in 2021.
“I just worry about what he does to himself. I worry about the crises he puts himself through in order to prepare,” Cox told the magazine.
The 76-year-old has since doubled down on his comments, calling Strong’s method “f***ing annoying” in an interview earlier this year.
In a newly-published interview with Variety ahead of the show’s fourth season, Cox put Strong’s acting style down to the culture in which he was raised and taught.
“It’s really a cultural clash,” Cox said. “I don’t put up with all that American s***. I’m sorry.

Two candidates bidding for the leadership of the Scottish National party agreed that Jk Rowling was a “national treasure” during a televised debate.
The Scottish author of the Harry Potter book series has been the subject of sustained backlash due to her stance on transgender issues, which some critics have characterised as “transphobic”.
Ash Regan, Humza Yousaf and Kate Forbes were asked whether Rowling was a “national treasure” during Sky News’ leadership debate on Monday (13 March).
Yousaf, the Scottish government’s health secretary, said the author was “amazing in terms of the books she’s written, but I do disagree with her vehemently on the issue of transgender rights”.
Forbes and Regan, however, did not agree. “Yes, and I do think she’s brave,” Forbes said in response to the question.
Asked specifically if she disagreed with Rowling on transgender rights Forbes replied: “No I don’t disagree with her.

Piers Morgan has joined a chorus of criticism against the BBC’s decision to suspend Gary Lineker after he compared British government rhetoric to Nazi Germany.
Morgan said the BBC was “pathetically spineless” for demanding that Lineker step back from his Match Of The Day hosting duties for breaking impartiality rules on Twitter.
Voicing support for his friend, Morgan said:
Wtf? How pathetically spineless.. I now demand the BBC suspend every presenter who has made public comment about news or current affairs – starting with Sir David Attenborough and Lord Sugar. https://t.co/7DRtFEOAVa

Others also voiced solidarity. Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, the former England strikers and close colleagues of Lineker, said they were boycotting Match of the Day.
I have informed the BBC that I won’t be appearing on Motd tomorrow night.

The next season of Jeremy Clarkson’s “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” on ITV will be its last on the British broadcaster, with “no future commitments” in the works.
ITV boss Carolyn McCall tells Variety that the forthcoming season of the game show, which is currently in production, will be Clarkson’s final foray as host. The “Grand Tour” presenter has been at the center of a media firestorm over his December column in British tabloid The Sun. In the piece, which is currently being investigated by British media regulator Ipso, Clarkson said the Duchess of Sussex should be forced to parade the streets naked with “lumps of excrement thrown at her.”
“We have a contract. We’re contracted to this [season], so we will do that,” said McCall. “And then we have no future commitments. And we haven’t made any statements about that.”

Update: U.K. gender equality charity The Fawcett Society, one of the two complainants who have prompted an investigation by media watchdog Ipso into Jeremy Clarkson’s Meghan Markle column in The Sun, have said that the “Grand Tour” presenter’s “misogynistic and racist” views have helped to normalize violence, hate and harassment against women.
In response to a question by Variety about the charity’s motivations for the complaint, Fawcett Society CEO Jemima Olchawski said in a statement: “Following our complaint, we welcome the Ipso investigation. Of course, the comments were deeply offensive but it goes beyond that. Clarkson’s misogynistic and racist views appeared in one of our biggest national newspapers, they will have been seen and sanctioned by experienced journalists before they were published in the Sun. It is this endorsement of these toxic views that is also extremely troubling.

Exactly a month after former “Top Gear” host Jeremy Clarkson caused outrage by publishing a column in “The Sun” containing several inflammatory statements about Meghan Markle, the veteran TV host’s two Amazon series are likely coming to an end.
Variety is reporting that the TV presenter’s Amazon Prime Video series “The Grand Tour,” a “Top Gear” spinoff, and ““Clarkson’s Farm,” a documentary about his Cotswolds farm, will not be renewed at the service, past seasons that have already been commissioned. That means that “Clarkson’s Farm,” which premieres its second season February 10, will likely end in 2024 with its already ordered Season 3, while “The Grand Tour” will end after four special episodes ordered for the streamer. Variety additionally reported that a Tuesday press conference for “Clarkson’s Farm” Season 2 has been canceled.
Amazon Prime Video declined to comment on the news to IndieWire.

Update: A virtual press conference for Jeremy Clarkson’s Amazon Prime Video series “Clarkson’s Farm” that was set to take place on Tuesday morning has been called off.
The event — which was scheduled before the presenter’s column about Meghan Markle was published in British tabloid The Sun in December — had still been on the cards in recent weeks, despite the ensuing controversy. However, it was canceled at 6 p.m. U.K. time on Monday, hours after Clarkson posted a fresh apology on Instagram, and Variety reported that Prime Video was set to part ways with the controversial figure.
Earlier: Amazon Prime Video is likely to be parting ways with Jeremy Clarkson mere weeks after his comments about Meghan Markle were published in British tabloid The Sun.
Sources tell Variety that the streaming service won’t be working with Clarkson beyond seasons of “The Grand Tour” and “Clarkson’s Farm” that have already been commissioned.

Jennifer Lawrence has admitted to getting embarrassingly starstruck when working on a film with Ariana Grande.
In a new interview, the Academy Award-winning actor said that no matter how famous she got, it was tabloid favourites who continued to enthral her.
“The biggest celebrities in the world to me are like Pete Davidson,” she told W magazine.
“Or Ariana Grande was in Don’t Look Up and I got photographed with her. I look fully like a radio contest winner. I’m like [wide-eyed smile].”
Lawrence starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Adam McKay’s 2021 satirical film, in which Grande played a fictional pop star.
Don’t Look Up received polarising reviews from critics and viewers, but was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Lawrence then listed an unexpected celebrity obsession, saying: “I’d be starstruck if I saw Jessica Simpson. Yeah, that would knock me over. She made a video for my birthday one time.

The Sun‘s apology over a removed column from British media personality Jeremy Clarkson is nothing more than a “PR stunt,” a rep for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has said.
In a statement to the BBC following The Sun’s retraction of and apology for the column — in which Clarkson expressed hate for the Duchess of Sussex on a “cellular level” — a spokesperson for the couple called the outlet’s response disingenuous.
“The fact that the Sun has not contacted The Duchess of Sussex to apologize shows their intent,” they told the magazine. “This is nothing more than a PR stunt.”
The statement went on to express that while some kind of response was necessary for “the public,” a “shift” in how the U.K. outlet covers the couple would be a “true apology.”

British tabloid The Sun has apologized for a column written by former “Top Gear” host Jeremy Clarkson in which he wrote he “hates” Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, on a “cellular level” and suggested she be made to “parade naked” through Britain while people “throw lumps of excrement at her.”
“Columnists’ opinions are their own, but as a publisher, we realise that with free expression comes responsibility,” the newspaper wrote in a statement published on its website on Friday evening local time. “We at The Sun regret the publication of this article and we are sincerely sorry.”
The statement added that Clarkson’s article had been removed from its website and archives.

Jeremy Clarkson will remain the host of ITV’s “Who Wants to Be a Million?” in the U.K. despite backlash from an op-ed in The Sun that members of Parliament condemned as “violent misogynistic language” against Meghan Markle, according to Kevin Lygo, ITV’s managing director of media and entertainment.
“What he writes in a newspaper column is really more for you to talk about because we have no control over what he says,” Lygo said to the Broadcasting Press Guild in London. “We hire him as a consummate broadcaster of the most famous quiz show on television. So it’s not quite in our wheelhouse.”
Lygo also called his remarks “awful” and noted that Clarkson has “acknowledged that,” but “should apologize.”

Jeremy Clarkson’s controversial newspaper column about Meghan Markle has become the Independent Press Standards Organisation’s most complained about article.
The column, which was published in The Sun on Friday 17 December, had received more than 17,500 complaints by 9am on Tuesday the following week.
“We will follow our usual processes to examine the complaints we have received,” an Ipso spokesperson told the Pa news agency.
“This will take longer than usual because of the volume of complaints.”
The article was removed from The Sun’s website at Clarkson’s request following the backlash, a spokesperson for the publication said.
The spokesperson added that the number of complaints would be subject to change.
The number also surpassed the total number of complaints the media regulator received in 2021, which was 14,355.

An MP has written to ITV ‘s chief executive demanding that Jeremy Clarkson be taken off air completely, following his controversial remarks about the Duchess of Sussex.
John Nicolson, Snp shadow culture secretary and MP for Ochil and South Perthshire, shared a letter addressed to Dame Carolyn Julia McCall, who has been chief executive of ITV since 2018, on Twitter.

The row surrounding Jeremy Clarkson’s column about Meghan Markle has continued this week, with the former Top Gear presenter widely condemned for his remarks.
In his op-ed for The Sun, published on Friday (16 December) the 62-year-old wrote that he dreamt of the day Markle would be made to parade naked through Britain while the crowd chanted “shame” and threw “excrement” at her.
Clarkson claimed that “everyone who’s my age thinks the same way”.
The Sun has now removed Clarkson’s comment piece from its website. “In light of Jeremy Clarkson’s tweet he has asked us to take last week’s column down,” the page now reads.
A number of fellow celebrities and public figures, including London mayor Sadiq Khan and Scotland’s first minister Nicola Sturgeon, have criticised Clarkson.

British television presenter Jeremy Clarkson said Monday he is “horrified to have caused so much hurt” with a scathing column about Prince Harry’s wife, Meghan, that attracted a flood of complaints.
Clarkson, who hosts motoring show “The Grand Tour” on Amazon, wrote in tabloid newspaper The Sun that he hated the former Meghan Markle “on a cellular level” and dreamed of her being paraded naked through British towns “while the crowds chant ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her.”
Media watchdog the Independent Press Standards Organization said it had received more than 12,000 complaints about the column by Monday — close to the total number of complaints it received in all of 2021.

English broadcaster Jeremy Clarkson has issued a statement following his inflammatory comments about Meghan Markle. Jeremy had made the remarks about the Duchess of Sussex in a column for the UK tabloid ‘The Sun’. The ‘Clarkson’s Farm’ presenter shared a statement on social media, saying he is “horrified to have caused so much hurt,” reports ‘Variety’.
“Oh dear. I’ve rather put my foot in it,” a contrite Clarkson tweeted. “In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in ‘Game of Thrones’ and this has gone down badly with a great many people. I’m horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in future.”
According to ‘Variety’, in Clarkson’s December 16 column, titled ‘One day, Harold the glove puppet will tell the truth about A Woman Talking B******ks,’ the former ‘Top Gear’ presenter wrote of Markle: “I hate her.

Jeremy Clarkson, the host of the docuseries Clarkson’s Farm on Amazon Prime, has released a statement after a column he wrote in Brit tabloid The Sun about Meghan Markle led to more than 6,000 complaints to the country’s press regulator.
In Friday’s piece — which attracted condemnation from across the media landscape (including from his own daughter) over the weekend — Clarkson wrote that Prince Harry was being “controlled” by Markle, and he was “dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her.”
In a bizarre rant, Clarkson — who in 2015 was fired as host of the BBC’s motoring show after punching a producer — added that he hated Markle more than convicted serial killer Rose West and Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Kathy Burke has hit out at Jeremy Clarkson after the former Top Gear presenter came under fire for vitriolic remarks about Meghan Markle.
In a newspaper column this week, Clarkson wrote that he despises the Duchess of Sussex “on a cellular level” and dreams of people throwing “excrement” at her in the street.
He also said he hated Markle, “not like I hate Nicola Sturgeon or Rose West”, but on a “cellular level”.
Clarkson’s comments, written in The Sun on Friday 16 December in response to the Harry and Meghan documentary on Netflix, were widely condemned as “vile and disgusting”.
Now, comedian and actor Burke has weighed in, tweeting on Sunday 18 December: “Watched the rest of #HarryandMeganNetflix. Still think they’re pretty great and I love their relationship with Meghan’s gorgeous mum, Doria.
“Wishing them continued happiness and people like that colossal c*** Clarkson continued pain with the thought of it.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said he’s open to the idea of working with controversial “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling on another title in the Wizarding World franchise during the company’s Q3 earnings call Thursday.
The remark was made as part of a lengthy statement about the importance of franchises like DC’s “Superman,” “Batman” and “Aquaman” films, as well as “Lord of the Rings,” “Game of Thrones” and “Sex and the City” content. It was during this answer the the Wbd CEO mentioned his interest in “if we can do something with J.K. on ‘Harry Potter’ going forward.”
“We’re going to have a real focus on franchises,” Zaslav said in response to a question from a media analyst about how content will be “different” under Warner Bros. Discovery from the AT&T-run WarnerMedia era and before. “We haven’t had a ‘Superman’ movie in 13 years.

Images from classic and contemporary films were beamed onto some of Edinburgh’s most famous locations Monday evening as part of a growing campaign to save the city’s Filmhouse cinema and the Edinburgh International Film Festival, one of the world’s longest continuously running film festivals.
In October, the trustees in charge of the Centre for the Moving Image (Cmi), the charity which runs the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Filmhouse Cinema in Edinburgh, and Belmont Filmhouse in Aberdeen, appointed administrators.
A statement from the Cmi said a “perfect storm” of rising costs and falling admissions numbers due to the pandemic had been exacerbated by the current cost of living crisis. All three institutions ceased trading immediately.
Since then, a local campaign titled Save The Filmhouse comprised of former Filmhouse employees, filmmakers, and patrons has ballooned into a larger movement with a petition to save the organizations attracting more than 23,000 signatures.

Fans of hit Netflix series The Watcher have been stopped by police from visiting the real house from the show.
The seven-part thriller is loosely based on a true story of a family who, after moving into their dream home in Westfield, New Jersey, are harassed by a stalker named ‘The Watcher’.
But after the family’s real six-bedroom home attracted fans of series, police cordoned off the area with tape and “no trespassing”signs.
According to CBS News, officers are also reportedly stopping by the home regularly to turn away viewers of the show wanting to see it in real-life.
The series, which was created by Glee’s Ryan Murphy and screenwriter Ian Brennan, stars Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale, Jennifer Coolidge and Mia Farrow.

Jimmy Carr has been mocked by Amanda Holden for having a hair transplant.
Holden made the dig while appearing as a judge on the forthcoming episode of I Can See Your Voice on BBC One (Saturday 22 October).
In a clip seen by Metro, the judging panel – which also includes Carr, Alison Hammond and Alexandra Burke – were introduced to two friends who met while working at a hair salon.
“Do I look alright?” Holden, 51, jokingly asked, before pointing at Carr, 50, and saying: “What about his new hair? Because that was from someone else – it was donated.”
Carr was quick to join in on the joke at his own expense. “It’s from a donor,” he said. “One of One Direction looks terrible now.”
Holden is used to being the butt of Carr’s jokes on the show. In last week’s episode, when a mystery singer calling themselves No Scrubs performed wearing a doctor’s uniform,...

Noel Gallagher has dampened hope for a potential Oasis reunion with brother Liam.
Oasis split up in 2009 after 18 years of performing together, following a bitter feud between Noel and Liam which still persists today.
While Liam has expressed a desire to get the band back together, Noel has often dismissed them.
Appearing on Monday’s episode (17 October) of the Pub Talk podcast, Noel said that it would take “a set of extraordinary circumstances” for fans to see Oasis perform together.
But, much to their fans dismay, he continued: “I don’t like going back over things. I always say to people ‘would you go on holiday with your ex missus?’”
On the potential of a reunion, Noel said there would be “no point”.
“Oasis sell as many records now, per year, as we did when we were together,” he continued. “We’re as popular now, in the eyes of the people,...

Months after Disney said it would “reevaluate” its Standard and Practices guidelines, one episode of the kids’ show Bluey remains unavailable on the streamer.
Back in August, an episode entitled “Family Meeting” was reinstated on the site after viewers wrote in to complain about its absence. Disney+ currently carries all three seasons of the Australian animated programme.
The episode was apparently censored by Disney because it included an open discussion of farting.
Now, according to the website Fatherly, an episode from season two entitled “Dad Baby” appears to still be banned on the streamer.
In the episode, the dad, Bandit, pretends to give birth to Bingo. Fans on Reddit and YouTube have assumed that this “depiction” of birth is the probable reason behind its absence.
The Independent has contacted Disney for comment.

Alan Moore has hit out at the HBO adaptation of Watchmen, describing it as “embarrassing” to him.
The 2019 series, created by Lost’s Damon Lindelof, loosely adapted and sequelised Moore’s seminal comic book.
According to Moore, the series showrunner sent him a letter when HBO’s Watchmen was in development.
The letter supposedly began: “Dear Mr Moore, I am one of the bastards currently destroying Watchmen.”
“That wasn’t the best opener,” Moore said, in a new interview with GQ. “It went on through a lot of, what seemed to me to be, neurotic rambling. ‘Can you at least tell us how to pronounce “Ozymandias”?’

The team behind House of the Dragon have explained the final scene in episode nine, amid viewer frustration that it was something of an anti-climax.

*Spoilers follow – you have been warned*
Incorrectly believing Viserys’s dying wish was for their son Aegon to succeed him as ruler, Alicent (Olivia Cooke) informs her father Otto (Rhys Ifans), who jumps to action in order to prevent Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) from taking her rightful place on the Iron Throne.
Throughout the episode, the Hightowers attempt to convince the people on King’s Landing, including Viserys’s sister Rhaenys (Eve Best), that, in the final moments of his life, he went against his steadfast wish to have Rhaenyra succeed him.

Toy Story star Tim Allen has been mocked for a viral social media post discussing the “face of woke”.
The right-wing actor, who once compared Hollywood liberals to Nazis in 1930s Germany, posted on Twitter on Monday (17 October).
“Who is the face of woke,” Allen wrote. “Do wokees have a club house in someone’s backyard or maybe a cute yet safe playpen somewhere?”
The tweet was subsequently “liked” more than 40,000 times, prompting thousands of replies – many of which were mocking the peculiar phrasing and sentiment of Allen’s post.
“Woke” is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as the state of being “aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice)”. It is often used perjoritively by those on the political right.
A number of celebrities jumped in to respond to Allen’s tweet, ridiculing both the “face of woke” phrasing and...

Kerr shared his message in a lengthy statement posted on the British punk band’s social media with the caption: “An important message off our Jez.”
“I know this isn’t exactly a big deal in 2022, but it is something that I’ve only just managed to deal with and I hope by sharing, it might help someone else,” the statement began.
“After a long period of illness, I’ve had a lot of time to reflect on my life and have recognised that secrecy and unnecessary shame is not good for my mental health,” the bassist said before explaining that he was “bisexual” and had engaged in “crossdressing” throughout his life.

Former Britain’s Got Talent star Jonathan Goodwin has reflected on the stunt that left him paralysed.
In October 2021, Goodwin performed an escapology stunt in which he planned to remove a straight jacket while hung upside down between two suspended cars 30 feet in the air.
The cars, however, were released prematurely and Goodwin was crushed between them.
His fiancée, Sherlock star Amanda Abbington, revealed the news on the podcast Out to Lunch with Jay Rayner, stating: “He fell 30 feet and lost a kidney, broke both shoulder blades, shattered both legs. Third degree burns, broke his spine and severed his spinal cord and nearly died. And then on the operating table, he nearly died again.”
She added: “He’s paralysed now, he’s in a wheelchair. Unless there’s a kind of stem cell surgery or that thing that Elon Musk is designing with the little chip, he’ll be like that forever.

Saturday Night Live took aim at the Texas mother who went viral for warning parents against letting their children see Hocus Pocus 2.
During a recent interview with Kwtx, Jamie Gooch said that the Disney + film could “unleash hell” in one’s home.
Comedians Chloe Fineman and Heidi Gardner spoofed the concerned mother on Saturday (15 October), playing characters Debbie Hole and Stacey Bussy.
“Imagine that,” Fineman said in a mock-Texan accent, “your home with hell in it!”
The two comedians went on to joke that Halloween in general was “satanic”, as were the sweets children eat. Discussing Sour Patch Kids – a popular US brand of confectionary – Gardner said: “I mean think about it, we’re feeding kids, kids. Making a bunch of Armie Hammers.”
Hammer was accused of having a cannibal fetish in unverified text messages allegedly sent by the actor that were shared on social media last year.

Graham Norton has deleted his Twitter account days after a clip of him talking about “cancel culture” and Jk Rowling went viral.
The TV presenter was speaking at the Cheltenham Literature Festival on Tuesday (11 October), when he said that he felt the word “cancellation” should be replaced with “accountability’.
“You read a lot of articles in papers by people complaining about cancel culture and you think, ‘In what world are you cancelled?’” he said. “I’m reading your article in a newspaper, or you’re doing interviews about how terrible it is to be cancelled? I think the word is the wrong word. I think the word should be ‘accountability’.”
Host Mariella Frostrup then asked Norton about how his comments applied to Rowling, whom she said had been hit with “anger, rage and attempts at censorship” for her views on transgender people.
