She studied law at Glasgow University, and worked as a solicitor at the Drumchapel Law Centre. She got into full-time politics at age 29, when she was elected to the new Holyrood parliament as a Glasgow regional MSP.
She becomes the new leader of the Scottish National Party and, by association, Scotland's next first minister, following Alex Salmond's decision to stand down after the 2014 vote against independence.
