As Dayna Hanson’s crime drama opens, we’re driving along a tree-lined road at night. There’s a light coating of snow snow on the ground and the absence of tracks speaks to the isolation, the loneliness of this place. It’s a fitting introduction to the sort of small northern town where, most of the time, nothing much happens, but when it does, it’s all too easy to get away with.
We will return to that road, and to the bridge it leads onto, at a later point. In the meantime, we cut away to a party, a large house full of drunken young people drinking and dancing and fooling around. Rich boy Randall (Sterling Beaumon), whose parents own the place, is making an idiot of himself in an attempt to command everyone’s attention, but the one who attracts the camera’s gaze is Alicia (Sarah Hay...

"Show me the evidence" Vertical Ent. has revealed an official trailer for a legal thriller titled Confession, the latest from filmmaker Dayna Hanson. It will be out to watch in March if anyone cares. The story follows a small-town district attorney named Jillian who takes on the case of a young woman who has accused three men of sexual assault, only to find her career and life in jeopardy as she unravels the dark web of murder and intrigue that lies beneath the surface of the town. Michael Ironside co-stars as a veteran investigator "diving into the complex case only to find difficulties and danger in spades as they hope to serve justice." Of course. Clark Backo stars as Jillian, joined by Sarah Hay, Sterling Beaumon, Mark Cryer, Marsha Dietlein, and Ray Faiola. This looks like a made-for-tv special event, nothing that should be in theaters. // Continue Reading ›...

In last week’s episode of “Room 104,” the inventive TV experiment from the Duplass brothers, two baby-faced Mormon missionaries ask “Heavenly Father” for a sign when their faith begins to flag. Feeling discouraged by their failure to persuade a single convert, Noah (Adam Foster) has recently tried coffee, and Joseph (Nat Wolff) zealously guides him back to the light. When they ask for a sign and the TV magically turns on so-called “pornography,” Joseph flip-flops and proposes breaking all the rules as a way to strengthen their faith. When Joseph returns with a six-pack of beer, they throw the tamest all nighter any hotel has ever seen, which to them is incredibly wild and thrilling. Through passing glances and hidden hard-ons, it soon becomes clear they’d like to switch teams in more ways than one.

[Editor’s Note: This article is presented in partnership with HBO in support of Room 104, which premieres onJuly 28 at 11:30 p.m. Et.]
“Room 104” isn’t like anything else you’ll see on television this year. The new half-hour, genre-bending HBO series features a number of unique facets, but they all relate back, in one way or another, to the creative minds of Mark and Jay Duplass.
The writers, producers, directors, and actors known for breakout independent films like “The Puffy Chair” and “Cyrus” as well as award-winning television like “Togetherness” and “Transparent” have come together to create the latest exciting original series on the Home Box Office network.
Set in a single room in your typical American motel chain, each week tells a different story and all 12 episodes of Season 1 were produced by the Duplass Brothers. The tone, characters, and era can all change week-to-week, and viewers should be ready for drama, comedy, horror, and at the start of each new entry. What unites each story is the common search for...

Jay and Mark Duplass are creators who don’t like to be put in a box, even if they’re making six hours of television set within the same four walls.
“Room 104,” the new HBO anthology series from the Duplass brothers, tells individual, episodic stories in each of its 12 half-hour installments, and all 12 are set within the same cheap, dingy hotel room. The first episode, which premiered at the Atx TV Festival Saturday evening, is a lot closer to Mark Duplass’ work in indie films “Creep” and “The One I Love” than the brothers’ former HBO comedy.
During a panel discussion following the episode, Duplass said he felt inspired by the constraints of the premise.
“I have something like 218 ideas in a Word document on my computer,” Duplass said.
Noting how it felt like he was back making low-budget indie films, Duplass said he wrote seven of the 12 episodes...

Note to independent filmmakers: Enlist Benjamin Kasulke as your cinematographer and I will definitely pay attention to you. He is one of the most talented cinematographers working today and he will make any film visually interesting enough to be worth watching. That is precisely the reason I was very anxious to watch writer-director Dayna Hanson's Improvement Club at SXSW 2013. It is as simple as that. The problem is, I had to watch Improvement Club twice before I could actually pay attention to the story. The first time around, I was so entranced by Kasulke's perspective -- not that he was stealing the show, but because I was viewing Improvement Club knowing that it was shot by him. Kasulke was the only thing I knew about Improvement Club, so he is what I latched on to at first.

According to my unofficial research, there is not a single packet of Blowfish to be had this morning in downtown Austin. But really, what else would you expect from South by Southwest, which is already proving to be more laidback and altogether relaxed than Sundance? The very first person I ran into after dropping off my bags was producer extraordinaire Mel Eslyn, whose upcoming film “The One I Love” recently announced casting of Elisabeth Moss, Mark Duplass, and Ted Danson. She was sitting at a table in the convention center with “Improvement Club” director Dayna Hanson and actor Peggy Piacenza waiting for the film’s premiere. I chatted with all three fabulous ladies, snagged an “Improvement Club” totebag from Mel, and went off for my official badge. “Wow, that is a professional photo,” the badge guy said when he pulled up my info. “Do you want to retake it here?...

This is one of the rare moments in one’s life when jury duty calls…. you emphatically say, yes. Yours truly is headed to the 2013 edition of the SXSW Film Festival as one-third of jury for the fest’s Narrative Feature Competition. On this site, we heart film festivals for their uniqueness, quirks, rebel attitude, flamboyancy, spirit and how the top fests all individually contribute in shaping up a given year in film – and the cornerstone signs are that when you’re running a quality fest is when you look back at the previous editions and take inventory of the gem discoveries that were offered.
As film critics we can’t help but continually rank, sort, classify the films we see… so this juror gig doesn’t come across as unfamiliar terrain, but its definitively a privileged position when you care about film and the filmmakers the way we all...

A dancer and choreographer, Dayna Hanson blends her two art mediums in the performance art driver feature "Improvement Club," a film about a ragtag group of Seattle performers loosely based on Hanson's own work. What it's about: When their big gig falls through, a ragtag performance troupe struggles to find their audience—and the motivating force behind their work. About the filmmaker: I'm a choreographer and multidisciplinary artist and have been making dance theater in Seattle for 25 years. "Improvement Club" is my first feature film. My live work has been presented nationally and internationally in dance and contemporary performance venues such as Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Performing Garage and Joyce Theater in New York, On the Boards in Seattle, Kunstlerhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt, Redcat in Los Angeles and Fusebox Festival in Austin. I’ve made short dance films on my own and with my former dance company, 33 Fainting Spells,...

South by Southwest (SXSW) is just one of many film festivals, we here at Sound On Sight cover yearly. The fest, which takes place every spring in Austin, Texas, began in 1987, and has continued to grow in size every year. The fest announced the first wave of films back in early January, and the lineup included some highly anticipated films such as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Evil Dead, Downloaded and Spring Breakers. Now the full lineup has been announced, and it just might be one of the best lineups the festival has ever programmed.
SXSW takes place March 8-16 in Austin Texas. Here are just some of the films we are excited about.
Narrative Feature Competition – This year’s 8 films were selected from 1,191 submissions. Each film is a World Premiere.

Some of the best films of the 2012/2013 calender year from Richard Linklater, Harmony Korine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Bujalski, Jeff Nichols, David Gordon Green, Shane Carruth and Joshua Oppenheimer are among the headliner names for the 2013 edition of the South by Southwest Film Festival. With a little over 100 plus film line-up (a whopping 2000+ titles were submitted), almost 70 are world premieres: there is the highly anticipated sophomore film (that has been on our radar since it first went into production) with M. Blash’s (The Wait), Joe Swanberg who makes SXSW his second home will premiere Drinking Buddies, veteran indie filmmaker John Sayles saddles in with Go For Sisters, and rounding out the Narrative Spotlight section we’ve got The Bounceback from Bryan Poyser, Loves Her Gun from Geoff Marslett along with titles we thought might break into Park City, but found an Austin home instead with Jacob Vaughan’s Milo and...
