Grant Sputore.
After making his feature directing debut on I Am Mother Grant Sputore has no qualms about making the significant leap to directing the science-fiction thriller Augmented for Warner Bros.
“I feel excited and ready to tackle it,” Sputore tells If as he collaborates with his I Am Mother screenwriter Michael Lloyd Green, who is reworking a spec script by Mark Townend.
WB optioned Townend’s script in 2017 and announced it would be produced by Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment. But the project stalled until Robbie hired Sputore and Green, who pitched their vision to studio executives.

The plot follows 40-year-old criminal lawyer Olivia Holloway, whose body is hijacked by an anonymous hacker who calls himself “Judge” while she defends the heir to a giant corporation who’s been accused of killing a young woman.

Weta Workshop has released a very cool featurette that gives us a behind-the-scenes look at what went into creating the practical robot costume that was used in the Netflix sci-fi film I Am Mother. Yes, in case you didn’t already know, the robot that we saw in this film was not CGI. It was a practical costume, and it was incredibly well made. It’s so cool to see how real they were able to make this robot look.
If you haven’t watched the movie yet, you should check it out. It’s actually really good! It stars Hilary Swank and the story centers on a robot (Rose Byrne) designed to repopulate the earth and she raises a human child (Clara Rugaard). The bond between mother and daughter is tested and threatened when an inexplicable stranger arrives with alarming news. As you’ll see, things will take a dark and sinister turn.

It is a collaboration between two obviously hungry and passionate creators who have managed to bring a modern sci-fi drama to the surface, something fresh, original and extremely well done.

I Am Mother is one of those original Netflix movies that feels both ambitious and undercooked. It takes place, we are told at the outset, in an undefined future where an “extinction event” has taken place, wiping out most if not all of the human race. But stored in an underground bunker in case of just such a crisis are some 63,000 frozen human embryos, all carefully tended by an a robot named Mother, who hatches one of the embryos in the bunker’s medical lab and grows it via montage into a teenage girl named Daughter (newcomer Clara Rugaard).

The Sundance Film Festival may have wrapped up on Saturday, but the sales haven’t stopped. Netflix has finalized a deal for North American rights to “I Am Mother,” a sci-fi thriller that stars Hilary Swank.
The film strikes a cautionary note about the dangers of automation. It is set in a dystopic future, one in which humanity has largely been wiped out. In this setting, a teenage girl (Clara Rugaard) is raised to be the first of a new generation of humans. She is created by “Mother” (Rose Byrne), a robot designed to repopulate Earth, and brought up in a bunker. The bond between robot and “daughter” is strained with the arrival of a badly injured stranger (Swank), a woman who is deeply distrustful of “Mother” for reasons that soon become clear. “I Am Mother” marks the feature film directing debut of Grant Sputore. He cooked up the story with Michael Lloyd Green,...

As a fan of contained and intimately crafted science fiction stories, I was enthralled by Grant Sputore’s unique examination of the human condition and morality in I Am Mother, his stunning feature film debut. Evoking similar feelings I had while watching films like 10 Cloverfield Lane, Moon, Ex Machina, I Am Mother strikes a perfect balance, delivering up an intriguing slice of post-apocalyptic sci-fi coupled with a thoughtful character study that finds new ways to explore the dangers of technology and how it relates to all of humanity as we continue to transition towards greater leaps in automation and electronic sciences.
I Am Mother introduces us to a world where there has been a cataclysmic event that has wiped out all of humanity. Inside a remote bunker, a highly evolved robot named Mother (voiced by Rose Byrne and performed by Luke Hawker) has been tasked with bringing new life...

‘Little Monsters.’ (Photo credit: Ben King)
Neon and Hulu have jointly acquired Us rights to Abe Forsythe’s Little Monsters in the first major deal for the Australian films that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
The dark comedy starring Lupita Nyong’o, Alexander England and Josh Gad sparked an overnight bidding war resulting in the deal worth mid-seven figures, Deadline.com reported.
The theatrical release will be accompanied by a massive cross promotion on Hulu’s streaming platform, which has an estimated 23 million subscribers.
The Screen Actors Guild award to the cast of Black Panther, which features Nyong’o, is said to have piqued buyers’ interest in the film which premiered in the Midnight section.
Produced by Snoot Entertainment’s Keith and Jess Calder with Made Up Stories’ Bruna Papandrea, Jodie Matterson and Steve Hutensky and funded by Screen Australia and Create Nsw, the film stars England as Dave,...

“I Am Mother” director Grant Sputore’s parentage is obvious: James Cameron crossbred with Ridley Scott. There are worse families to come from if you’re a young talent entering the world. Like Mother herself, an artificially intelligent robot who springs to life in an air-locked repopulation facility the day humanity goes extinct. Mother, voiced by Rose Byrne and ambulated by Luke Hawker, selects one thumb-size embryo among 63,000, pops it into a biomedical Instant Pot, and 24 hours later, Daughter (Clara Rugaard) is born — or rather, hatched.
The rest of the embryos stay iced, even after the girl becomes a teenager roaming the long hallways of Sputore and cinematographer Steven D. Annis’ stunning bunker: a steel warren with red, white, and blue lights arranged in tidy grids and lines. It’s lovely and lonely, even with Mother baking birthday cakes and teaching the girl origami, ethics, and ballet. How is an...

It’s hard to believe it’s almost time for a new year of the Sundance Film Festival, but we’re now less than two months away, and this writer is extremely excited to head to Park City once again, especially after digging into Sundance’s initial lineup announcement today. Not only does their Midnight slate look insanely great, but there are a ton of films running in Sundance’s other programming tracks that I am beyond excited to see in January.
Some of the highlights from today’s lineup announcement include Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile which chronicles the life of Ted Bundy (played by Zac Efron) through the experiences of his girlfriend; Paradise Hills, which stars Emma Roberts, Milla Jovovich, and Awkwafina; Relive from producer Jason Blum; Dan Gilroy’s Buzzsaw; and the Alien-themed documentary Memory. A record six Australian feature films will screen at the Sundance Film Festival, with Animals, Judy and Punch, Little Monsters, Top End Wedding and I Am Mother having their world premieres in the Utah-based festival, which runs from January 24 – February 3.
In addition, Jennifer Kent’s The Nightingale will have its North American premiere after winning the special jury prize and the Marcello Mastroianni award for best new young performer for Baykali Ganambar at this year’s Venice Film Festival.
That surpasses the previous record of five in 1997. Rose Byrne will voice the titular robot Mother in the sci-fi thriller “I Am Mother.”
Hilary Swank and Clara Rugaard will also star in the film. Rugaard portrays the first of a new generation of humans raised by “Mother” — a kindly robot designed to repopulate the earth following the extinction of mankind. But their unique bond is threatened when a blood-drenched woman (Swank) inexplicably arrives, calling into question everything she’s been told about the outside world.
First-time feature filmmaker Grant Sputore is directing based on an original concept. Michael Lloyd Green penned the script, which was on the 2016 Black List.
Byrne said Sputore’s movie is a “unique, eerie, unnerving and visionary science fiction piece. He is such an exciting talent to come out of Australia and I am so flattered to be on board with such an incredible artist.”
The film began shooting last year at South Australia’s Adelaide Studios.

Netflix post-apocalyptic film, I Am Mother, stars Hilary Swank, Clara Rugaard and a creepy maternal robot voiced by Rose Byrne.
A while ago, we first heard that Oscar winner Hilary Swank was teaming up with first time director Grant Sputore for a new sci-fi/horror film called I Am Mother. We were curious, because Swank's previous forays into the horror genre weren't exactly...good, for the most part. The Gift was solid enough with Sam Raimi at the helm, and The Reaping and The Resident both initially looked promising, but didn't ultimately make the grade, so it was interesting to us that the actress had chosen to dip her toe back into the scream queen water some years later, especially with an unproven director at the helm. Yet, when the film became bound for Netflix direct distribution, the logic became a bit clearer.

Screen Australia has granted more than $276,000 in funding to support the development of 10 feature films, including projects by the co-writer of local smash The Sapphires and the team behind Wish You Were Here.
It is a small financial lifeline for the industry which is no longer receiving drama production investment from the national government agency after it spent its entire annual $42 million budget in just six months.
Among the new feature film projects to receive funding is comedy-drama The Grip, written by Tony Briggs (The Sapphires). It follows five young Australian businessmen who discover the secret to winning the pokies and develop Robin Hood-like reputations. David Field (The Combination) will direct.
Writer Felicity Price and director Kieran Darcy-Smith (Wish You Were Here) have also received funding to develop a new (as yet) untitled thriller. It follows social misfit Vincent, who holds a flame for 17-year-old Amber, but when his hopes are crushed he acts impulsively,...
