Last year, the second season of Defiance was way down in the ratings. How will the series perform in season three -- will the numbers get better or fall lower? Will this Syfy series be cancelled or renewed for a fourth season? Stay tuned.
Defiance takes place in the year 2047 -- some 30 years after various alien races arrived on Earth. The town of Defiance (what used to be St. Louis) stands as an example of how humans and aliens can live harmoniously (mostly) together. The cast includes Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Jaime Murray, Tony Curran, Graham Greene, Jesse Rath, Trenna Keating, Anna Hopkins, Nicole Munoz, Lee Tergesen, Conrad Coates, and Nichole Galicia.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will...

The Performer | Frank Dillane
The Show | Fear the Walking Dead
The Episode | “Pilot” (Aug. 23)
The Performance | We’d only watched the first few minutes of The Walking Dead spinoff — the artful opening vignette in which Frank Dillane took junkie Nick Clark from drug-addled confusion to abject terror — before we knew: A star had been born.
The English actor was so in the moment, so vulnerable and palpably afraid, that we couldn’t help but be drawn in. It was as if, like his character, we were seeing a zombie for the very first time. (And, considering how many walkers we’ve seen by now,...

The Omec take centre-stage in this week's eventful episode of Defiance...
This review contains spoilers.
3.9 Ostinato In White
After the wild ride of episode eight, one might reasonably assume that Ostinato In White might be less frenetic. However, with the Vc sub-plot neutralised, the Omec take centre stage in what turned out to be a rather messy diversion.
From the outset, this story is all over the place, trying to make you think that darling Doc Yewll has been ripped to pieces by some feral creature. Except this Yewll just doesn’t react like the one we’re used to, because she always has a plan.
That’s soon explained, linking back to earlier in the season when Kindzi took the Doc’s DNA, which she then failed to destroy when instructed to do so.
Sadly, much of this narrative doesn't make a great deal of sense, because if you...

Syfy is furthering its commitment to scripted programming by dedicating an all-new night to original dramas. On June 19th Syfy will kick off its new Thursday night block with the one-two punch of the Season 2 premiere of "Defiance," followed by the series premiere of "Dominion."
From the Press Release:
As the story of "Defiance" resumes, the lives of the townspeople are in drastic turmoil. The Earth Republic has assumed control of the town with far-reaching consequences, including a new mayor.
Nolan (Grant Bowler) traverses the badlands to find a lost Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas), Amanda (Julie Benz) has an unexpected new role in the town as she searches for Kenya, and the Tarr family desperately tries to keep control of their criminal empire in the midst of dramatic changes. We are sadly months away from the June premiere of Season 2 of the Syfy original series Defiance. To tide us over, Syfy has released the first two of what are hopefully many “Jesse Does Defiance” featurettes with Jesse Rath (yes, Meaghan’s brother), who plays Alak Tarr on the show.
The good news about this long wait, besides the featurettes, is that there’s plenty of time to rewatch (or check out for the first time) Season 1, the finale of which was aired all the way back in July of last year. The entire Season 1 is available right now on your On Demand channel and here online.
Here’s a nice two-minute summary of the show, via last summer’s Comic-Con reel, followed by the featurettes:
Trailer: Defiance – Comic-Con 2013 Reel
Featurette: Defiance – Season 2: Jesse Does Defiance – Set Tour
Featurette: Defiance – Season 2: Jesse Does Defiance – Breaking Bread

Syfy has announced that the great game/series crossover Defiance is set to return to production in Toronto next week for Season 2. Along with that announcement comes the first information about new and returning cast and production, starting with James Murray as Mayor Pottinger. Ooo. He was the dishy Stephen from when-it-was-great Season 1 and 2 of Primeval.
But wait, there’s more – “Grant Bowler returns as Nolan, along with … Stephanie Leonidas as Irisa Nolan, Tony Curran as Datak Tarr…” Okay, we saw Nolan revive, which explains how he can return, but Irisa, what the heck did she turn into? Apparently still Irisa, so that’s good news. And excellent, Tony Curran will be back as Datak, so… how will he get out of the blood-covered mess he was in?
For the latest information about what will be going on in our favorite post-terra-formed-over version of St. Louis when we return to it next June,...

Question: I’ve been dying for some Bones spoilers. Do you know when and how Booth and Brennan will get married? —Anne
Ausiello: No, but series creator Hart Hanson does, and here’s what he’s willing to share: “Like most things we do on Bones, the wedding will happen in a way you don’t expect and a time you don’t expect.” And what that, Mr. Cryptic McObscureson strikes again!

Be prepared for quite a shakeup in "Defiance's" second season.
When the show returns in June 2014, many of the characters will be in new places and leading lives markedly different from their old ones. Change was the big topic at the show's panel at San Diego Comic-Con Friday.
I had the pleasure of moderating the panel, which included executive producer Kevin Murphy and stars Grant Bowler (Joshua Nolan), Julie Benz (Amanda Rosewater), Stephanie Leonidas (Irisa), Tony Curran (Datak Tarr), Jaime Murray (Stahma Tarr), Jesse Rath (Alak Tarr) and Trion Worlds senior game producer Rob Hill.
"The goal at the end the end of Season 1 was to take the chess board and flip it up and knock all the pieces all over the place. Every single character has a reset," Murphy told the audience (which included at least two Stahma cosplayers and a guy with a Hellbug on his head...

Defiance, Season 1: Episode 13 – “Everything is Broken”
Directed by Michael Nankin

Returns to SyFy in 2014
When Defiance came along a couple months ago, there weren’t high expectations. It’s been a while since good science-fiction series populated TV (turn your attention to Orphan Black, if you didn’t catch the first season). Then it impressed us with its two-hour season premiere, which mostly functioned as a stand-alone TV film. It told a good enough story and concluded with a great action set piece that was more than satisfactory for a SyFy channel that hasn’t embraced more classic ideas of science-fiction in a while. Critical reaction to the series has been pretty moderate, and that’s probably about the right amount that it deserves. With the season finale now gone, it’s too much of a stretch to say that this was a truly great...

At the end of last week's suspenseful "Defiance" episode, Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas) had escaped from the office of Doc Yewll (Trenna Keating), who, it turns out, is much more than just the wise-cracking alien physician she appears to be.
Yewll now has the mysterious gold artifact formerly possessed by the wily (and now-deceased) former mayor, Nicky Riordan (Fionnula Flanagan), and the doctor had been using it during experiments on a sick Irisa, who appears to be closely linked to the object's powers.
In this exclusive clip from Monday's season finale of "Defiance" (below), Yewll is questioned about the disappearance of Irisa, whose fate figures prominently in Season 1's last episode. Also in the finale, Joshua Nolan (Grant Bowler) has to confront his past, and the residents of the town cast their votes in the heated mayoral race between Amanda Rosewater (Julie Benz) and Datak Tarr (Tony Curran).

Can’t we all just get along?
That question is raised by Syfy’s Defiance, premiering Monday at 9/8c and presenting a 2046 Earth that has received an extreme makeover via terraforming and the colonization by seven alien races (collectively dubbed Votans).
