Instead of jumping on the tour bus and heading to his band Midland’s headlining gig at the Dreamy Draw music festival, Mark Wystrach hopped into his vehicle and took the scenic route from his home in Tucson, Arizona, to the event site two hours away in Scottsdale.
“I drove up this back road — the original old highway — through the beautiful Sonoran desert,” Wystrach tells Rolling Stone backstage. “Growing up around a bunch of remarkable music here and at my parents’ [restaurant] the Steak Out in Sonoita — there were always incredible bands playing.

If you were in Simi Valley, California, this past Monday night and just wanted to knock down some pins at Harley’s Valley Bowl, then you were probably pretty surprised by what you saw when you walked through the bowling alley’s door: Dave Grohl hopping on stage with Taylor Hawkins’ son, Shane Hawkins, to play a set of classic rock covers with the late Hawkins’ former side project Chevy Metal. Check out the setlist and watch videos of the performance below.
That’s right, Grohl joined the band for an upbeat, uplifting performance, which not only included songs from classic artists like Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Queen, and more, but also featured additional guest appearances from living rock legends. If day one of Coachella was about major superstars pulling out all the stops, day two was about showing off talent in a more straightforward way. The artists who took the stage brought out just a few surprise guests here and there, but relied on the strength of their choreography and lengthy catalogs of hits, all things that made sets from Rosalía, Charli Xcx, and Blackpink some of the biggest standouts.
All of them played back-to-back on the main stage, where pop music dominated. With near-perfect weather, pop fans were...

Despite years of admirable effort, Nashville’s attempts to rock out can still tend to come off pretty hammy. Then you get something like “Mess With My Head,”a searing standout from Miranda Lambert’s seventh LP, Wildcard. Over sleek drums and noir guitars, the country queen unspools steamy psychodrama, singing about her mind as a luxury hotel suite open for 2 a.m. room service: “I know why I gave the keys to you,” she intones, before a chorus that sounds like Sheryl Crow under the influence of Hole’s Celebrity Skin.

Richard Linklater cares about the music in his films, with "School Of Rock," "Boyhood," and "Dazed and Confused" in particular showing a strong commitment to a carefully curated soundtrack. But what you might not know is how much of a stickler the director is for ensuring the song choices are not anachronistic — for his movies, or anybody else's. "If I know a song came out a year later than the time when a film is set, f--- you, you just lost me. You can’t approach a period film saying, ‘Oh, who’s going to care?’ No, no! I’m doing it for that one person who does care. Because they’re out there. I’m that person. If you’re going to be fast and loose with that, I don’t trust you on anything. You at least have to try," he told The Toronto Star. "Even way back...

In a recent NPR The Record post about where historians go to find archives of music to help with their research, author Michaelangelo Matos cites SoundCloud as a “thunderingly obvious” choice. He's right. Since 2007, SoundCloud, a clearinghouse for an enormous amount of content, has been a simple and easy-to-use audio-streaming platform providing access to podcasts, mixtapes, and single tracks that are free to upload and listen to. In addition to random Italian disco edits, you can find every Thin Lizzy guitar solo from 1971 to 1983, every James Hetfield “Yeah,” recordings from the International Space Station, and other untold random material. Lorde’s “Royals” was available on SoundCloud long before it became a megahit. Drake used it to drop his recent remix of Fetty Wap’s “My Way.” It's well designed for social media, too, with no-fuss "like" and "share" options for Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr, making it a useful tool for...

Weezer seem pretty stoked for fans to hear their upcoming "Everything Will Be Alright in the End" -- their first album in four years, and the first produced by Ric Ocasek since 2000's Green Album. The new album's first single traded the group's recent forays into bland Top 40 territory for more streamlined '90s-style rock and took fans "Back to the Shack". Now they're back again with a metallic ode to a cold, controlling woman known as "Cleopatra." Is it the real Cleopatra? Or just some kind of metaphor? Either way, it's a fierce blast of melodic hard rock anchored by some formidable fretwork. "Cleopatra" begins with acoustic strumming, a harmonica and a subdued vocal performance from frontman Rivers Cuomo before exploding pop-metal territory, complete with a searing solo featuring doubled electric guitars (courtesy of either Cuomo or Brian Bell, or both) à la Boston or Thin Lizzy (or "Buddy Holly"). Take a listen here.

After a long campaign waged by their fans, Kiss will finally be inducted into the Rock & Roll of Fame this spring. While Def Leppard lead singer Joe Elliott is happy for Kiss, with whom his group will tour this summer, don’t expect for him to care one iota whether he and his band mates ever make it into the hallowed halls. My colleague, Liane Bonin Starr, and I taped our CulturePop podcast with Elliott this week and he was so expansive on so many topics that we’re breaking the podcast into two parts: Part 1 will be posted next week and Part 2, the week after, but we couldn’t wait to put up his thoughts on the Cleveland-based Rock Hall. Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl star in Ron Howard's film about the epic rivalry between F1 greats James Hunt and Niki Lauda. What is there to say about Motörhead than hasn’t been said?
Now onto their 21st album and still going just as strong as ever (despite Lemmy’s increasingly dire health issues), Aftershock continues to deliver the same signature mix of greasy powerchords and driving basslines – nitrous-fuelled as always by Lemmy’s marmite vocals.
Forever a sticking point with many rock fans is the combination of Motörhead’s lack of compositional progression across their discography, twinned with Mr. Kilmister’s vocals, which are now sadly noticeably weaker than before. However, from opening pulse-generator Heartbreaker to the gear-change solo in Do You Believe, this is still unashamedly Motörhead through and through.
Production-wise Lemmy’s bass tone sounds as downright nasty as ever, and with the band themselves already living legends, you’d expect nothing less at this stage. Whilst other metal festival stalwarts Slayer are going through...

Given that both the gasoline-powered internal combustion engine and the motion picture camera came to be at almost the same time, and given that both cars and movies have gone on to hold such special places in American culture, it’s no wonder that Hollywood has had a long love affair with automobiles and racing. From the silent film Racing Hearts (1922), to Disney’s Herbie franchise, to the late Tony Scott’s Days of Thunder (1990), to Universal’s Fast & Furious series, almost as long as there have been movies, there have been movies about cars. Now, award-winning director Ron Howard has entered the automotive film waters with Rush, a biographical action-drama about the 1976 Formula One season and the rivalry between drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Rush is a very good movie, and definitely one to keep an eye on as we head into awards season.

Ron Howard's 70s-set formula one thriller about the rivalry between drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda is supercharged fun, even if it may not depict the era with total accuracy

Formula One champion James Hunt smoked, drank and reportedly slept with 5,000 women. The legend has been printed. Rush, Ron Howard's gloriously fun biopic about the hotheaded rivalry between McLaren's English playboy and the austere, Ferrari-driving Austrian Niki Lauda, colours it in and has it enamelled.
Writer Peter Morgan (re-teaming with Howard after Frost/Nixon) presents a rollicking tale of lunatics and dreamers. Of men aiming for excellence in an era when a death toll of two or three drivers per year was part of the sport. He celebrates the divine, selfish pursuit of glory, and falls deeply in love with the gung-ho derring-do of...

Heading into a hairpin turn before its release next month, Ron Howard's "Rush" will first have to get around the curve at Tiff, where he hopes audiences will shift into first gear for his true story racing drama. With the movie getting ready to cross the finish line, a few more previews have rushed online. (Sorry, we're feeling punny today.) A fresh clip from "Rush" is now online which shows off Chris Hemsworth as hunky racer James Hunt, chatting it up with the lovely Olivia Wilde sporting a somewhat dodgy Brit accent. The film itself chronicles the speedway rivalry between Hunt and Nikki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl), set against the backdrop of the rockin' '70s, and thus the soundtrack features some choice cuts from the decade. David Bowie, Thin Lizzy and Steve Winwood have some tunes on the soundtrack, which is mostly rounded out by a score from Hans Zimmer,...

While not as widely known on this side of the Atlantic, international supergroup Avantasia is kind of a big deal: their new rock opera The Mystery of Time not only charted highly in their home base of Germany, but also hit the Top 10 album sales charts in Finland, Sweden and the UK in the first few weeks of its release. The record recently reached North American shores via Nuclear Blast Records, and it's picking up some positive buzz among gothic/symphonic metal fans, so it's high time I gave this one a spin. Founded in 1999 by composer/singer Tobias Sammet (above, frontman for popular power-metallers Edguy), Avantasia is a “supergroup” in every sense of the word: not only does it feature an all-star cast of artists, it's more of an army than a mere band. -- Anthrax "Anthems" (Mri/Megaforce)
There's a revelation on Anthrax's "Anthems" Ep: Rush's music is annoying, no matter who plays it.
The speed metal kings, driven by drummer Charlie Benante's infatuation with early Neil Peart, chose Rush's "Anthem" as the inspiration for their eight-track Ep in which they cover classic 1970s rock bands that influenced them. Suffice it to say the jarring stop-and-start timing and riffing of a Rush song doesn't work with the heaviest of heavy metal bands, either.
But the rest of this all-too-short disc is like hard-rock comfort food, hewing closely to the originals, with some special Anthrax sauce on the side. Best is a cover of Cheap Trick's "Big Eyes," which blends the band's melody with Anthrax's harder edge.
"Smokin'" is a cover of the classic Boston ode to inhalables, and "Jailbreak" puts a fine point on the Thin Lizzy classic.
Singer Joey Belladonna shows his vocal versatility here.

Few musical reunions are anything better than schmaltzy and many are far worse. But I still long for the Smiths to return
As a Grease fan, I approached the news that John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John have reunited for a charity with cautious optimism. Could they ever recapture the electrified magic of You're the One That I Want? I was hoping for a moment akin to that of Sonny and Cher's famous 1987 Letterman reunion. Naff, admittedly, but also strangely touching. I'll admit that seeing the way their hairstyles had transformed (Sonny's definitely had an inverse relationship to Cher's) as they sang I Got You Babe for the first time since 1975 brought a tear to the eye.
But it was not to be. Instead, I was treated to a low-budget home video of Danny and Sandy line dancing, set to a backing track of bland country-inspired Aor irrelevance, followed by...

Anybody who laughs at Status Quo's musicianship (including the Radio 1 powers that be that unceremoniously threw them off the station's playlist) obviously haven't counted the 118 million albums the band have sold worldwide in their three decades as a band. Or remembered how they kickstarted Live Aid in 1985 with just the right amount of vroom to help ensure the enduring success of the day.
The Quo - still going strong
Now, like any self-respecting pillars of the rock establishment, the Quo have got a rockumentary all of their own, charting their success and with contributions from such like-minded luminaries as Brian May, Paul Weller, Sir Cliff, Thin Lizzy and Buzzcocks. The list goes on...

With over 118 million album sales worldwide, more chart hits than any other rock group and a total of 415 weeks in the UK Singles chart, it's safe to say that Status Quo are sort of a big deal. Considered by many to be one of - if not the - most influential rock band from the UK, the boys have fronted sell out tour after sell out tour, bringing a euphoric sound to the millions for the last 43 years.
Now, with the release of the fly-on-the-wall documentary Hello Quo!, the boys are set to conquer yet another media outlet. Produced by well-known music filmmaker Alan G Parker, the documentary depicts the phenomenon that is Status Quo, combining behind-the-scenes, never before seen footage with fantastic interviews from Brian May, Paul Weller, Sir Cliff Richard, Thin Lizzy, Buzzcocks, Slade and Midge Ure (to name but a few).

In 1970, the British heavy metal band Black Sabbath released a song called Iron Man.
And although it was not inspired in any way by the Marvel Comics armour-clad superhero, it was an obvious choice for the soundtrack of the 2008 movie starring Robert Downey Jr and can be heard over the closing credits.
Taking the connection even further, Downey Jr can now be seen wearing a Black Sabbath T-shirt (see below) in a scene in the new team-up movie Avengers Assemble.
With all those references, it's no surprise that Ultimate Classic Rock has decided to recast Marvel's superhero ensemble with rockers. So who did they pick?
Ted Nugent has been named the new bow-and-arrow master Hawkeye and Thin Lizzy's Phil Lynott the perfect choice for donning the eye-patch and leather coat of Nick Fury.

No one would have believed in the last months of 2011 that one of the most inspired and successful concept albums of all time, itself based on one of the most popular and beloved science fiction stories of all time, was about to be given an upgrade of planet sized proportions; but that's exactly what transpired when composer Jeff Wayne called a press conference on 18th November to announce the coming of The War Of The Worlds: The New Generation.
Thirty-three years after the original double album was released, a critical and commercial success that featured an eclectic cast including Moody Blues front man Justin Hayward, chirpy Cockney David Essex, Thin Lizzy rocker Phil Lynott and legendary movie star Richard Burton, Wayne surprised fans by revealing that he would be releasing a reinterpretation of his masterpiece in June 2012, to be followed several months later by an international concert tour in the winter (subject,...

I wish I could say that the sight of hundreds of eager Conan O’Brien fans waiting to get into the Beacon Theater while dressed as pop culture references (Waldo, I found you!), their beloved Coco, and The Flaming C! would be different on any night other than October 31st. But as any member of Team Coco could attest, that simply wouldn’t be the case. Halloween or not, the Conan elite were slapping on their finest (and sometimes intentionally downright terrible) orange wigs and welcoming home their departed hero, in a line that wrapped around three Manhattan blocks.

Wandering from one musical outfit to another throughout his career, Gary Moore has had many highs with Thin Lizzy, going solo, and recording with artists such as Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce. Consequently, he's accumulated an impressive following over the years and musical library appreciated by most discerning music lovers. In 2010, he gave fans a terrific tour that culminated with a recorded appearance in Montreux, Switzerland where he played many favorites as well as three never-before-released tracks. About seven months later, on February 6, 2011, he died of a heart attack and the world lost an incredible and deeply soulful blues musician.

On Oct. 21, 1974, Californian Clifford Travis Bean filed a U.S. patent with the intention of making a guitar from "extruded aluminum." His goal, read the patent, was to create an instrument that resulted in "stable and versatile tones." Nearly four decades later, it's safe to say that Bean, who died last Friday at the age of 63, was successful in his stated aims.
In the five years following his filed patent, Bean produced some 3,600 instruments that are not only by and large still in use today but also still influencing new generations of guitar makers and players. His heavy, unmistakable aluminum-necked guitars have an unwavering reputation for tone, sustain and musical flexibility. Though they're most popular now at the intersection of heavy metal and indie rock, they've been used over the years by The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, Thin Lizzy and jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan.

Late guitar legend Gary Moore left behind an estate worth $3.2 million after his death in February. The Thin Lizzy rocker died from a suspected heart attack while on holiday in Spain with his girlfriend Petra Nioduschewski.
According to Sunday Mirror, records show the musician left behind assets of more than $3.2 million, which was reduced to around $1.6 million after deductions. A judge in England granted executors of his estate temporary control of his companies until final settlement is negotiated.
He was married twice and is survived by two sons and a daughter.
Speaking about Moore's death, Brian Downey admitted he was shocked about the news. "I am in total shock," so he said. "He will always be in my thoughts and prayers and I just can't believe he is gone."...
