For its next page-to-screen adaptation, The CW is turning to one of literature’s greatest drama queens.

The CW is developing an anthology series inspired by the works of Jane Austen, Variety has learned.
Titled “Modern Austen,” the one-hour series reimagines Austen’s novels as six modern stories. Each season is a different novel, beginning with “Pride and Prejudice,” set in contemporary San Francisco.
The series hails from Eleanor Burgess, who will serve as writer and executive producer. Burgess most recently wrote on the HBO series “Perry Mason.” Stephanie Allain and Gabrielle Ebron will executive produce via Homegrown Pictures. Warner Bros. Television will produce.
Austen’s works have been frequently adapted for both film and television over the years. “Pride and Prejudice” alone has been adapted into multiple television miniseries as well as features. Most recently it was turned into a feature in 2005 starring Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet, Rupert Friend as Mr. Wickham, and Matthew Macfayden as Mr. Darcy. There have also been more free spirited approaches to Austen’s work,...

The first half of HBO’s Perry Mason was a bit of a tease.
Though everyone with even a passing familiarity with American television knows that Perry Mason is a devoted, capable lawyer, HBO’s version of the show introduced him as something else entirely. Through four full episodes of TV, Matthew Rhys’s legal hero was more of a grimy private investigator.
To be fair, this depiction of Perry Mason worked quite well within the HBO series’ gritty ‘20s aesthetic. But any show featuring Perry Mason was going to have to head to a courtroom eventually. And eventually Perry Mason did. The back half of Perry Mason’s eight episode first season put the titular star in the legal world where he belongs. And that’s presumably where he’ll stay for season 2.
Below is an episode guide to better track Perry’s evolution.

The winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama will be announced on April 15. American playwrights will surely hope to see themselves named as winner, not only for the prestige that comes with the Pulitzer, but for a boost in the hotly competitive Tony race for Best Play.
Not everyone is eligible for this sought after award. The Pulitzer is an American organization and gives out its award and $15,000 prize to “a distinguished play by an American author, preferably original in its source and dealing with American life.” That removes English playwright Jez Butterworth and his hit play “The Ferryman” from competition, despite his strong Tony odds.
Aaron Sorkin could gain momentum if the Pulitzer committee enjoys his “To Kill a Mockingbird” adaptation. After all, it is a uniquely American story that remains resonant in today’s society. Still, Harper Lee provides some big shoes to fill, and the Pulitzer is rarely awarded to an adaptation.
